    This is cool. Afro

Europe's oldest prehistoric town found in Bulgaria

    Quote
Archaeologists in eastern Bulgaria have unearthed the oldest prehistoric town ever found in Europe and an ancient salt production site that may explain massive riches discovered in the region.

Excavations at the site near the modern-day town of Provadia have so far uncovered the remains of a settlement of two-storey houses, a series of pits used for rituals, as well as parts of a gate, bastion structures and three later fortification walls - all carbon dated between the middle and late Chalcolithic age from 4,700 to 4,200 BC.

"We are not talking about a town like the Greek city-states, ancient Rome or medieval settlements, but about what archaeologists agree constituted a town in the fifth millennium BC," said Vasil Nikolov, a researcher with Bulgaria's National Institute of Archaeology, after announcing the findings earlier this month.

    <snip>

"The huge walls around the settlement, which were built very tall and with stone blocks... are also something unseen in excavations of prehistoric sites in south-east Europe so far," Dr Bachvarov added.

Well fortified, a religious centre and most importantly, a major production centre for a specialised commodity that was traded far and wide, the settlement of about 350 people met all the conditions to be considered the oldest known "prehistoric town" in Europe.

"At a time when people did not know the wheel and cart, these people hauled huge rocks and built massive walls. Why? What did they hide behind them? [It was for one reason] - salt," Dr Nikolov said.

The rest of the article mentions that initially archaeologists were wondering how the town got so rich, in an area that wasn't on known trade routes and appeared to have no natural resources. Salt. There you go. yes

Looking like a very good chance of it, judging by the articles. Any idea how long the DNA testing is supposed to take?

Richard III dig: DNA confirms bones are king
A skeleton found beneath a Leicester car park has been confirmed as that of English king Richard III.

Experts from the University of Leicester said DNA from the bones matched that of descendants of the monarch's family.

Richard was killed in battle in 1485 but his grave was lost when the church around it was demolished in the 16th Century.

The skeleton had suffered 10 injuries, including eight to the skull.

The bones, which are of a man in his late 20s or early 30s, have been carbon dated to a period from 1455-1540.

Richard was 32 when he died at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

Richard III was a goody!  All the nasty stuff was made up by his enemies!

Some points over at New Scientist, about the DNA testing.

    http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn23132-leicesters-winter-made-glorious-by-richard-iii.html

    http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2013/02/leicester-body-richard-iii.html

Short summary: the DNA test results are indicative, but not conclusive. IOW, the skeleton could have given those results without it being Richard III's skeleton.

However, taken with the other evidence, it does seem that this really is R3 hisself.

I watched the Channel 4 documentary about it and the lady who started the whole project/search, Philippa Langley, seemed like she had emotionally invested herself heavily to finding a heroic/goodguy Richard III.  I was facepalming a lot, thinking "jeez! just be objective and accept what the evidence suggests".  I thought the osteologist Jo Appleby was very honest and professional. Haven't seen the doco, but the NS articles made the same comment about pre-exisitng emotional investments by some people. The test results still haven't been peer-reviewed, so it's science-by-media at the moment. Not that I really expect the results to fall apart with more scrutiny. The actual scientists involved seem to be sensible about it all.

Dunno anything about her really, but this Philippa Langley character doesn't seem to be a stunning intellect.

Richard III dig: Facial reconstruction shows how king may have looked

    Quote
Richard III Society member Philippa Langley, originator of the search, said on a Channel 4 documentary earlier: "It doesn't look like the face of a tyrant. I'm sorry but it doesn't.

"He's very handsome. It's like you could just talk to him, have a conversation with him right now."

Thank you for that in-depth character analysis of R3, based on sound reasoning. parrot

grin12 To be fair to old Dick, most of the stuff about him being a tyrant was written by his enemies, so is of debatable accuracy. She still can't judge character by facial structure though. That's just bonkers.
