  • Anti-gay marriage protesters rally in Paris, FEMEN activists get beat up
     OP - November 18, 2012, 10:22 PM

Thousands of Catholics and other opponents of French government plans to legalise gay marriage and same-sex adoption marched in Paris on Sunday, a day after more than 100,000 turned out across France for the cause.

Police said some 9,000 people had joined the protest, rallying behind slogans such as one large banner reading: "France needs children, not homosexuals."

Civitas official Alain Escada said gay marriage was "a Pandora's box" that would let others demand extended marriage rights, including polygamists and incestuous people.

French feminist writer and columnist Caroline Fourest (the same one that wrote 'Brother Tariq') witnessed the whole thing and said that:
"the women were hit by their pursuers, who also lashed out at journalists filming the scene."

This didn't happen in Saudi Arabi, not even in Russia, it happened in the middle of Paris, France in 2012.

I hear this recurring slippery slope argument against gay marriage legalization, but how can it be a good argument if there's nothing wrong with what's at the end of the slope?

    how fuck works without shit??

Even if you don't like what's at the end of the slope its still not a good argument.  After all there are plenty of countries where polygamy is legal, do you think any of them are likely to legalise gay marriage anytime soon?  If they've redefined marriage from one man-one woman, and not slid down a slippery slope why can't we?

I'm assuming though, that there's a tradition of polygamous marriages in the places where it is legal, therefore there was no redefinition from what was traditionally accepted. Western conservatives are afraid of a domino affect once the long accepted meaning of the term (as understood in western culture) is changed. Instead of arguing about the validity of this slippery slope, I'd rather argue with them about the importance of protecting personal freedoms as exercised by consenting adult parties.

They don't believe in such freedoms. Wink Not if said freedom contradicts their dogma.

There is polygamy and incest in the bible (Who did Adam and Eve's children marry?). Don't know why christian conservatives are so worried about those things when it's in their own traditional scriptures. Marriage has already been redefined away from their traditions, many, many times. As this graphic shows:

    Quote

    1
    Polygynous Marriage
Probably the most common form of marriage in the bible, it is where a man has more than one wife.

    2
    Levirate Marriage
When a woman was widowed without a son, it became the responsibility of the brother-in-law or a close male relative to take her in and impregnate her. If the resulting child was a son, he would be considered the heir of her late husband. See Ruth, and the story of Onan (Gen. 38:6-10).

    3
A man, a woman and her property — a female slave
The famous “handmaiden” sketch, as preformed by Abraham (Gen. 16:1-6) and Jacob (Gen. 30:4-5).

    4
A man, one or more wives, and some concubines
The definition of a concubine varies from culture to culture, but they tended to be live-in mistresses. Concubines were tied to their “husband,” but had a lower status than a wife. Their children were not usually  heirs, so they were safe outlets for sex without risking the line of succession. To see how badly a concubine could be treated, see the famous story of the Levite and his concubine (Judges 19:1-30).

    5
A male soldier and a female prisoner of war
Women could be taken as booty from a successful campaign and forced to become wives or concubines. Deuteronomy 21:11-14 describes the process.

    6
A male rapist and his victim
Deuteronomy 22:28-29 describes how an unmarried woman who had been raped must marry her attacker.

    7
    A male and female slave
A female slave could be married to a male slave without consent, presumably to produce more slaves.

        and of course …

    8
    Monogamous, heterosexual marriage
What you might think of as the standard form of marriage, provided you think of arranged marriages as the standard. Also remember that inter-faith or cross-ethnic marriage were forbidden for large chunks of biblical history.

If boxing is a legal sport, why not fights to the death with chainsaws?

And if same-sex marriage is recognized by law, why not polygamy and polyandry?

This is the desperate reasoning one hears from Catholic Church spokesmen [sic] these days, affirming the Vatican’s staunch opposition to civil same-sex marriage. Quoth Fr. Federico Lombardi, Director of the Vatican Television Centre (if we watch television, why not also visit strip clubs?):

If we allow Christians to rule public life using their ancient texts, then why not the Muslims using their ancient texts? The slippery slope apparently goes both ways. (Not according to them I'm sure)

If we allow people to sleep, then why not allow them to commit suicide?
If we allow music, then why not allow all out satan worshipping orgiastic concerts?
If we allow people to eat food, what is to stop them from eating shit?

Incidentally, I have to say the anti-protest-protestors were obviously out to cause maximum aggrevation, so I'm not surprised they got a reaction. They'd probably be disappointed if they didn't get one. Doesn't justify a violent reaction, of course.

Those Civitas people are born to loose. I normally wouldn't give a damn about if homosexuals can get married, but they make me want the government to allow homosexual marriage very much !

I hear this recurring slippery slope argument against gay marriage legalization, but how can it be a good argument if there's nothing wrong with what's at the end of the slope?

They know there are people who are teetering on the edge of supporting gay marriage, people who sympathise on some level of their conscience or who are no longer persuaded by the fallacious arguments against homosexuality. Homosexuality is no longer bad enough on its own, so they are appealing to other prejudices. It's like aversion therapy - trying to associate “bad” things with good things so whenever someone encounters the good thing, they also think of the bad things.

It's progress I suppose. It's usually a more extreme association like paedophilia and beastiality, but smart people already know that such appeals are total nonsense, but might find themselves persuaded by their own aversion to the idea of sex a family member or of having to share their spouse with other people.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.
