     OP - November 26, 2012, 10:41 PM

November 25th was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

December 10th is International Human Rights Day

The "16 Days of Action", marks the time when human rights and women's rights activists unite worldwide to raise public awareness about violence against women.

Feel free to share articles, events, petitions or anything else you feel might contribute to raising awareness of the plight of so many women around the world. Smiley

As an Indian woman, I count myself extremely lucky to have been born into a family and environment that, although misogynistic and oppressive to a certain extent, never denied me the basic right to life, health and education.
We have no control over where and to whom we are born.
I am all too often reminded that I could have easily been yet another 'statistic' or 'tragic article' in a newspaper, someone married off at 18 (or younger) to a stranger because I wasn't 'fit' for anything else, pressured into motherhood because of course what more could a woman ask for, then coerced into abortions because it is (obviously) my fault for conceiving a wretched female. No hopes or dreams, just a resignation to your 'fate'. I salute the women who have to wake up to such a life everyday, but I hope one day I will never have to, for they .... we ... will all be free.

Also, a very long but insightful article about why there hasn't yet been a massive feminist movement in India. I'm still reading it Grin
