Another interesting sci-fi to look forward to, from Tron: Legacy director, with Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman

    Oblivion
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQ3Mt9yiz6k

I love Tom Cruise in movies too. I know I'm apparently not supposed to like him, but I don't care. I don't care what religion he is, as long as he keeps working as hard as he does and keeps making great movies.

I wanted to watch 'Oblivion', but then found out it stars Tom Cruise and became hesitant.

Not that I care what religion he belongs to, but I think he's a terrible actor.

He's more of a 'movie star' than an actor. He was fantastic in Collateral though.

I saw the trailer to the Oblivion film, it looks rather dull and uncreative for a sci-fi film.

Looks good to me. Deffo gonna try and catch it on the big screen.

Not this weekend though. This weekend it's gonna be Iron Man 3

Even if it's more of the same, I'm gonna love it.

CGI effects are just getting awesome now. There was a period when everything looked glossy and too perfect, so obviously artificial that it ruined the immersion and suspension of disbelief. I preferred the old stop motion monsters. But now those big monsters and robots are starting to have real presence and weight to them. Gravity and impetus. Like it's really there and not just added in later.

    K. Saw Iron Man 3 today, in 3D even. Was ok, but TBH I think the last one was better. This one was sorta like

"OK guys, how the fuck are we going to top the giant flying robot snake from another dimension?"

"I know! I know! Let's put the President and a terrorist in, and make it longer, and blow more shit up!"

Oh and the lack of Scarlett Johanssen in black leather was a definite bummer. Gwyneth is looking good these days (the extra couple of years seem to suit her) but in the real-women-have-curves department she's no match for Scarlett.

So Iron Man IV needs more Scarlett, more outrageous shit from other dimensions, less Mr. Fucking President who nobody outside the US gives a shit about, and less Air Force One and all that shiz. bunny

Hey what do peeps think of 3D? I'm not all that impressed with it myself. I think it needs more work to be really effective. Some shots look like those kids' books that have the fake hologram/3D laminated pages and are not really natural or convincing.

It did occur to me that perhaps one reason the film didn't engage me much was becuase of the 3D shiz, and that I might actually have enjoyed it more in standard format.

It really depends on the movie. I saw Iron Man 3 in 3D over the weekend and it really was not that impressive. I've seen other, more graphic movies in 3D and they were much better.

Needed more Iron Man. There seemed to be a lack of Iron Man. The first one was awesome because it was all about the suit.

I know there were like loads of Iron Men briefly, but that isn't quite the same.

The next one needs a wombat in an Iron Wombat suit. Wombats are built like little tanks anyway, so one that could fly and shoot rockets and shit would be totally awesome. dance

Some of my recommendations from another thread:

    Hadashi no Gen (Barefoot Gen)
Heartbreaking fact-based story about the effects of the Hiroshima bomb, as seen through the eyes of a young boy. the Schindler's List of anime. Based on the directors own experiences as a Hiroshima survivor.

Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies)
Another heartwrencher. About an orphaned boy and his little sister struggling to survive during WWII. Based on the semi-autobiographic novel by the same name. Pulls no punches.

And the epic Ghost in the Shell - Poetic reflection on identity and humanities relationship with technology. They pretty much remade this and called it The Matrix. Some of the most iconic scenes and set pieces in The Matrix are lifted straight from this animation, as well as some of the philosophy and a lot of the art direction. Also a great little philosophical narrative on artificial intelligence and transhumanism. And one of the best opening credits of any movie:

Maybe a little too dated to be the kind of state-of-the-art visual feast you're looking for, but my faves nonetheless.
