So is it victim blaming to tell people to lock their doors/windows before sleeping? Or telling people to install alarm systems in homes to minimise the risk of being burgled? If not then why does this not apply to giving advice to women, if not then do people who don't take these precaution deserve to be robbed?

What advice should be given to women that is analogous to a house being burgled?

And what did I say? Did I say that is the only advice or that it is even given as an advice?

And it's not telling women to not wear it, it's outright banning it. That's a completely different scenario to just 'advice'.

You are in a thread that is discussing an article about telling women what to wear to not get raped. Read the thread before posting random stuff if you want to be taken seriously.

Men get raped too. What advice would you suggest we give to men to avoid them getting ass raped? What should they wear and not wear? How much skin can men show? How tight can their clothes be? Please enlighten us.

what to wear, where to walk, how to walk, with who to walk... all fall under a kind of harm reduction policy they teach women, makes my blood boil really...
do men have to think about harm reduction when it comes to their own bodies sexually??
how does that analogy apply when fully veiled women are raped??
rape was around before the miniskirt, and will sadly be around long after the burka..

Nice ad-hom. Did I even say that clothing should be given as an advice?

No you defended "advice" to avoid getting raped in a thread that is specifically talking about telling women what to wear. Does this need to be repeated again or do you understand now?

Yep "advice" only starts at telling women what to wear... it goes on from there. Here's an article I came across a while back:

    "Don’t get raped"

Don’t go out and get drunk, it could lead to you getting raped. Also, don’t have sex with someone because it could get you raped by someone they know. Don’t be young, that could definitely get you raped. While we’re at it, especially don’t be a child, that could really get you raped. Don’t be older either, that can get you raped. Don’t be living in a nursing home; women get raped there. In fact, what are you even doing in an establishment like that, are you asking for it? Don’t be single; single girls are sluts. Sluts get themselves raped. Don’t be married either or you could get raped by your husband. Don’t go jogging, that is just irresponsible. Don’t go to carparks, that can get you raped. And really don’t go jogging in a carpark, that is like so going to get you raped. Don’t go to public toilets, that can lead to rape. Don’t be dying; dying women get raped. Don’t ever be unconscious for any reason whatsoever, you’ll get yourself raped. Don’t be injured either. Raped. Avoid being physically disabled. Rape. And particularly avoid being intellectually disabled. You couldn’t get yourself more raped. Don’t go out alone, that is dangerous and you could get raped. But don’t accept lifts either; that is just asking for trouble. Don’t ever be naked, it could get you raped. Don’t wear clothing in which I could imagine you naked, that could get you raped. Don’t wear short skirts, they attract rape. Don’t wear baggy clothing or pyjamas or hospital gowns or a hijab either, women get raped in all those too. Don’t have a father, brother, uncle or grandfather. You could get raped by one of them. And oh my god, don’t even think about having a step-father. So raped. Don’t be ugly or you could deserve rape. Don’t be beautiful, you will be too tempting. Don’t flirt with men, this can get you raped. Don’t be rude to men either  – playing with fire. Don’t take public transport. Raped. Don’t drive your own car, what if someone hid in the back seat, you could get raped. Don’t sell sex or anything close to it. Raped, raped, raped. Don’t be mistaken for someone who might sell sex. Obviously, you would get raped. Don’t be a soldier, a waitress, a teacher, a police officer, or a hairdresser. All these women can get raped, sometimes by their professional colleagues. Don’t dance, it could lead to you getting raped. Don’t relax, what if it made you look like you wanted it. Don’t be stupid, that will surely get you raped. Don’t be naive, you’ll deserve what comes to you. Don’t be adventurous, that is being stupid and stupid women get raped. Don’t be silent, who can be expected to know you didn’t want to be raped. Don’t be intimidated, that can signal weakness and will get you raped. Don’t be trusting, don’t be in awe, don’t be flattered by anyone – that could so get you raped. Especially don’t be female, that could really get you raped, although being male could get you raped too, so don’t do that either. And don’t be interesex or trans, people will think rape is for your own good.

"Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused."

First give me the proof that men get raped by other men for the same reasons men rape women. Then we can discuss this matter further.

Go look it up on one of your MRA sites.

And here is where your main flaw is; you think that men and women are equal in every department when they aren't.

LOLWUT. Just trying to pick another fight are we? Grin

One of the best advice given is to stay in groups at night and to not go down deserted/secluded alleys/paths. This advice is also given to men and women alike to avoid getting robbed/murdered ect. Is it victim blaming for those crimes as well or is it just very good advice?

Most rape is done by people you know. Dates, friends, family members, acquaintances, etc. The "stranger rape" notion is statistically less likely than rape by a person you know. Go do some research on a topic before talking about it.

And like I said again, find me the where I say I agree with what the article is saying? Clothing isn't given as advice anyway in most countries so what are you trying to get at?

yes it. It is given as "advice" all over the world including in Canada and the US. It is given as "advice" by cops, by media, by ignorant people all over the place.

     Reply #42 - December 26, 2012, 02:21 AM

We're not talking about the crimes and their analogies, what I'm trying to get at is that any advice given by the police/authorities in protecting yourself from any crimes does not make it in any way a form of 'victim blaming'.

Its a different kettle of fish though isn't it? The analogy is just meaningless because its just not comparable in any way. Women get raped no matter what they wear.

Here are some sure fire rape prevention tactics found on the web:

"Sexual Assault Prevention Tips Guaranteed to Work"

    1. Don’t put drugs in women’s drinks.

    2. When you see a woman walking by herself, leave her alone.

    3. If you pull over to help a woman whose car has broken down, remember not to assault her.

    4. If you are in a lift and a woman gets in, don’t assault her. You know what? Don’t even ogle her.

    5. When you encounter a woman who is asleep, the safest course of action is to not assault her.

    6. Never creep into a woman’s home through an unlocked door or window, or spring out at her from between parked cars, or assault her.

    7. When you lurk in bushes and doorways with criminal intentions, always wear bright clothing, wave a flashlight, or play “Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed)” by the Raveonettes on a boombox really loud, so women in the vicinity will know where to aim their flamethrowers.

    8. USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM! If it is inconvenient for you to stop yourself from assaulting women, ask a trusted friend to accompany you when in public.

    9. Carry a rape whistle. If you find that you are about to assault a woman, you can hand the whistle to your buddy, so s/he can blow it to call for help.

    10. Give your buddy a revolver, so that when indifferent passers-by either ignore the rape whistle, or gather round to enjoy the spectacle, s/he can pistol-whip you.

Don’t forget: Honesty is the best policy. When asking a woman out on a date, don’t pretend that you are interested in her as a person; tell her straight up that you expect to be assaulting her later. If you don’t communicate your intentions, the woman may take it as a sign that you do not plan to rape her.

ZOMG you want to be careful. The forum's rules that all members agreed to upon registration are clear that we do not tolerate any form of victim-blaming of rape victims:

    4/ Rape victims.
Under no circumstances will suggesting that rape victims are responsible for the actions of a rapist be tolerated.
Once again, it is grounds for an instant smite. No advance warnings will be given.

This is your first and only SMITE.

You will not be smited or warned again. You will be banned if you break any of the forum's rules again.

Of course wearing a burka would avoid this. Not like ANYONE has EVER been raped in one of those before EVER. [/sarcasm]

Of course only sluts get raped... Who ISN'T a slut these days? I'm serious. Name one female who hasn't been called a slut. It seems like slut-shaming these days has gotten so crazy that you can be a slut just for having someone not like you :S

I breathe, so that makes me a slut too you know. In fact, I also experience sexual urges and physically attraction, so I'm even MORE of a slut. I don't see how being a male makes me any less of a slut...

Every time I hear my sister call someone a slut I always say that I'm one too. Tongue

Of course like many other sluts I've never had sex, but that doesn't seem to stop someone from being a slut.  whistling2

Is it just me or is slut the new nigger?

ZOMG : Duude! HTF did you entangle yourself into this thread? Grin I know you get irked by some feminists but you don't have to involve yourself in an argument in a thread that talks about telling women what not to wear to avoid getting raped, you can't argue against that no matter what.

Why are some people so hung up on modesty? It's not even all to do with them being religious.

Are they just prudes? Maybe they should all move to any liberal country in Europe and get the sticks out of their asses. In no time, everyone will be fucking everyone. That might solve the problem then. I do believe the solution lies in a sexual revolution. And I do believe that the fundamental problem is that people are so stuck in their own world, their own moral frameworks that they actively try to spread and promote to everyone else, because naturally, they think theirs is the best and most proper, and they need to get out in the world a little more to lose their confidence in their own shit, shed their ignorance, and be surprised at how much better humans can get along when they aren't so uptight.

Rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in.

I asked a friend of mine why she's so anal about covering her arms. I expected her to say "coz God..." but she picked up her sleeves and exposed very hairy arms. I think it's a mix of insecurity, being taught to hate your own body and things like that. I used to suffer a lot from being ashamed of my own body, but slowly crawling out of that mentality.

@topic, the problem with the clothes argument is that it's not the clothes that rapist go for. It's the vulnerable looking females they want. Zomg, think about who gets raped. Why do old ladies get raped? Why do rapists lurk around dark train stations, or wait for women to be drunk? Muslims get raped too. Biggest one though is the shocking story from India. She was with a male partner too.

Anyway this slut issue came about last week here in my city in Australia. Court case was about a teenage boy raping his uncle's wife. The jury said not guilty because the boy said she came onto him earlier and he thought she wanted him. She was asleep while he was raping her, and she was so drunk she didn't even know who it was until the DNA testing. That was it, he was free for saying she was flirting and stuff wacko
