  • Hello everyone :)
     OP - December 30, 2012, 11:14 PM

Hi everyone, I was never a Muslim, I am actually an ex-Christian atheist I hope thats okay. A little bit about me, I was raised as a born-again evangelical fundamentalist Christian and I began to lose my faith about 2 years ago and became an agnostic but its only this year in 2012 that I have begun to call myself an atheist.

There are several reasons that I chose to join this forum. First, I saw the CEMB Youtube videos and loved them. Even though they are told from a primarily Islamic point of view these videos largely also apply to Christianity as well in terms of their questions they pose about god and religion. But it is not really surprising, I have said for a long time that Yahweh, Allah, Jehovah, Elohim, etc are just different names for the exact same creature and even though Christians will emphatically deny this I think many Muslims do not (correct me if I'm wrong) and with my knowledge of the Bible I have recently begun reading the Quran and it seems to confirm this idea.

The other reason I have chosen to join is because I am interested in learning about Islam, but I am not interested in learning about it from a theological perspective or some devout Muslim or Imam giving me their interpretations of what the religion teaches and telling me about it as if it is true, I'd rather have the cold hard facts without a spin attached to it and I think that is something ex-Muslims can do. I can also provide a view point on evangelical Christianity if anyone here is interested in knowing what they believe, I'm pretty familiar with it (though I won't claim I'm an ex-ministry expert or something, I'm just a regular person who has a devout family). I'm pretty interested in religions in general as a historical subject, I also believe that to have a discussion with believers you should be able to provide examples outside of their religion as well as inside their religion to put the belief under scrutiny.

Other than that I enjoy science in all its forms (I'm majoring in physics), music; I am a music producer and play guitar, I also like beer a really big fan, video games, history, stand up comedy, BMW cars, and movies (especially science fiction and period pieces). Sorry if this is really long to read, I just felt like I should adequately introduce myself, my entire family are devout Christians and I don't feel comfortable revealing to them that I'm an atheist (I'm sure some people here can relate) so I don't have a lot of people to talk with about these things, so I just felt it was necessary to properly introduce myself Smiley Hello everyone

Welcome! Smiley Glad to hear you found our YouTube videos engaging. It's always nice to have an ex-theist of any variety here. I have a feeling you'll like it here, we have quite a few ex-Christians here of varying backgrounds. And lots of science fans too.

LOL, they are certainly not capable of that! They tend to stress the negative aspect of Islam (even religion in general!!!) and will lie when cornered by magnificent beauty of one true religion (Islam). See for yourself:

Thank you for your welcome but I respectfully disagree. Being an ex-Christian I am familiar with the claims of true religion. If I were a Christian taking a Christian position I would only need to recite John 3:16-21 to prove your religion wrong. I'll recite that verse now:

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God." John 3:16-21

Muslims do not believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ so accepting him into your heart is an unacceptable notion to a Muslim. As a Christian you can make the argument that as such all Muslims are damned and are at risk of hellfire unless they repent. This true religion business means nothing to me because anyone can make the claim and use their holy book to back it and damn all unbelievers.

I must admit, I can not find a verse of comparable length in the Koran that wold not be twice as boring to read.

Have you read this in the Koran:

12:1-2 (Pickthall translation of the Noble Koran)

Alif. Lam. Ra. These are verses of the Scripture that maketh plain.

Lo! We have revealed it, a Lecture in Arabic, that ye may understand.

Enough scripture though. You are making me feel like Little Johnny in Sunday school. The teacher told the kids that whoever gets a D or a C will go to hell and whoever gets an A or a B will go to heaven. To this Little John replied: I see there's no way we're getting out of this class alive?

Haha. Evangelical Christians believe that the Bible is the word of god and to be a true Christian you must accept Jesus Christ into your heart as your Lord and Savior to become saved and to be a true Christian. Evangelicals believe that anyone who has not accepted Jesus Christ into their heart is not a true Christian (even if they claim to be like Catholics). They believe that you cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven through works only by the grace of God and through the death of his son Jesus Christ. They claim that this sets them apart from many religions which demand good works for entry into the Kingdom of Heaven but Evangelicals will say the reason that you cannot get into Heaven by works alone is because it is impossible to keep the Ten Commandments and all fall short of the glory of God thus grace is needed and that grace is Jesus Christ dying on the cross for our sins (whom they believe is God incarnate), this is actually the ONLY requirement for getting into Heaven and the only way to do it, accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior. They believe that Christians are not bound to the Old Testament Jewish law because Jesus Christ abolished it when he died on the cross (despite verses in the Bible that contradict the claim). They believe that the Jews are the chosen people of God and hold them in high regard. However, they believe the Jews worship the same God they are misguided because they do not recognize the divinity of Jesus Christ. They believe Muslims worship a false god named Allah which is a deception by Satan. They believe that we are living in the end times and the rapture will occur within this generation (generally). They base this belief on "prophecies" in the Bible, specifically the one prophecizing the re-creation of the State of Israel. There is an entire sect of Christians of vigilant lookout for the Antichrist. The believe on the Day of Judgement Jesus will return and all the Jews will be saved and accept Jesus Christ as Lord thus giving them entry into heaven. They believe that after Jesus defeats the Antichrist he will lock Satan up and establish a thousand year kingdom of peace and prosperity where the believers will have new perfect eternal bodies (but there will still be mortals too if I remember correctly, I'm not sure I have to look). After 1000 years Satan will be released and Jesus will defeat him and this world will fade away and a new, perfect, eternal earth will be created. Thats about it in a nutshell. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask, I'll try and answer the best I can.

Interestingly, do Muslims ever have a personal relationship with Mo?  Do they accept him into their heart?  Do they think Mo is with them?
