The only real movies that satisfy me, are ones with gladiators/samurai, sci fi or fantasy (effects my friend) elements...and foreign movies.

Groundhog day can't compete against those requirements for me.  Bill Murray is great and all, but for me, it's all about the the list above.

I suppose they're real for you in that your able to access them on an emotional level as they may have resonated with a real world experience that has had a great impact upon your life and outlook, thus giving you a greater sense of purpose and providing meaning for your existence.

I love sci-fi and fantasy purely for its escapism. Love Star Wars for that. The original trilogy never took itself seriously nor ahd any overt philosophical message. Save, of course, for the Darkside and The Force stuff, yet it was never overplayed as in the PT.

Most movies at the cinema these days are nothing more than popcorn flicks. Some of the popcorn flicks are fucking awesome. When I saw The Avengers the only question I had was why nobody had ever given Joss Whedon a hundred million dollars to do a movie before now. But there are some real quality films coming out, you just have to look for them.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

I'm not dissing popcorn flicks. I like popcorn flicks too. But I''ll call it out when comparing it to a far superior movie. But, to each their own. By today's standard Groundhog Day may appear to be too slow and perhaps formulaic. Additonally, Murray is not ripped is he?

My comment was a general reply to the overall point, not Groundhog Day specifically.

    Ripped? Grin

I enjoyed Edge of tomorrow.  I didn't rate it 10 out of fucking 10, I just rate it as enjoyable.

To you groundhog day is superior, to me it isn't.  I get this lines me up for some dissing about popcorn flicks, since I'm not taking a popular position, but like you said to each their own.  Thank fuck movie quality is a completely subjective experience.

There are loads of old movies I like, but I don't just like them because they are old.

I've also never been one to romanticise everything from the past, which many people have a tendency to do with almost everything.

Today's movies are purely for people who want to have a "brain dead" moment where they can just lay back and be "entertained" without needing to think too much. I like that, even though it can become a bit boring after a while if there is no depth to the movie at all. Some movies can't even entertain on a basic level. Battleship, anyone? How fucking stupid was that. And the other one, with the monsters and giant robots. I could barely watch it.

There is no comparison between Bill Muray and Tom Cruise. one is a movie legend and the other is a Scientology nutjob who had a mental breakdown on opera. plus very few movies from today have any real story line. most of it relies on sexual shit and the other half relies on graphic/cgi porn. transformers for example.

And i think even the kind of actors that are now coming up are differnt in their style. like corn pointed out the movie battleship. compare that to the movie Contact (1997). hands down contact has a better story line. all that is going for battleship is cgi porn. even The Fifth Element is better than most of the latest sci fy movies.

I don't ever remember stating that Tom Cruise was an amazing actor, nor that he was better than Bill Murray.

At the risk of a groundhog day myself on this stupid subject.

Groundhog day = romantic comedy = pass me a bucket

Edge of tomorrow = CGI fest = not so bucket worthy

I hate rom coms, and won't rate them just because the 'legendary' Bill Murray is in them.

Movie snobbery is the same as all types of snobbery.  It really does suck.

I would say two things about that.

[1] 12:01 was released after Groundhog day. July 93 where as GHD was released on February 93.
[2] 12:01 was based on the short story with the same name writted in 1972. it is possible that both of them had the same inspiration? it is weird how similar the plot is and how close their release dates are. but then one is a tv movie while the other is a proper movie. plus i have seen this kind of plot recycled in shows like stargate as well.

Thinking about it, there is another movie called 'In Time' which was also based on a story written in 1973 and was first made into a short movie called 'Price of Life'.

I wonder how many more recycled plots are being used in movies these days.

I thought Edge of Tomorrow was excellent.

The name is the worst thing about it, its based on Japanese manga called 'All You Need is Kill' which is an awesome name.

But its a really enjoyable movie

No, the 1993 version is a remake of a 1990 version.

[2] 12:01 was based on the short story with the same name writted in 1972. it is possible that both of them had the same inspiration?

No, the author of the short story was involved with the 12:01 film. They took legal action against the makers of Groundhog Day for plagiarism.

Groundhog Day is plagiarised, not inspired by.

I did come across this when i was finding out more info on 12:01. maybe GHD and 12:01 are part of something like that?

Also if we look at the timeline, the story was written in 70s. the first short film (25 mins) was made in 90s. then came GHD and then 12:01 later the same year. so  maybe GHD is not plagiarized but an improvement over the 25 mins short film? like what happened with In Time as being an improvement over the 38 min short film Price of Life?

How can they be twin films if there is a 3 year gap? 12:01 was 1990 and Oscar nominated. Groundhog Day is 1993.

I think a better question would be why you would compare a 25 minute video to an oscar nominated movie like GHD lol

I think it very plausible that both GHD and the 12:01 movies were inspired by the story written in the 70s. i have downloaded the 92 min 12:01 and am gonna watch it tonight to see how it compares to GHD. but not holding my breath.

    Groundhog Day wasn't Oscar nominated.

I think it very plausible that both GHD and the 12:01 movies were inspired by the story written in the 70s.

12:01 the film is an adaptation of a story by the same name and the author is actually in the film. It is not inspired by. It literally is the story.

So first of all, my bad Ishina, i did not see the 'fullstop' after the word 'nominated'.

i just finished watching 12:01 (the 93 version) and it is just like GHD. the only difference is that it focuses on the physics of the whole thing where as GHD reflects more on the outside world. to me, there is no confusion on how these two movies CANNOT be TWIN FILMS.

So there is no doubt that the GHD and 12:01 are just another twin films movies.

which bring me to what i was saying earlier on, i wonder how many more film plots are being repeated and given an oscar to?

Speaking of reading ability, you should probably go back and read your own link on twin films. The 1993 version of 12:01 is a remake, not an original. Twin films is a term for when two studios bring the same idea out at the same time, either by coincidence, timing with current events, or by plagiarism or something like that.
