Abdel Aziz Mohamed Al-Baz, a 27 year old Egyptian atheist blogger has been arrested and charged with blasphemy in Kuwait. Al-Baz, also known as Ben Baz, has been held in the Central Prison of Kuwait City since January 2nd and is in real danger. Last year there were moves in the national parliament to introduce execution as a punishment for blasphemy and one man was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for allegedly blasphemous messages on Twitter.
Freedom of conscience, expression and speech are fundamental human rights. Ben Al-Baz has caused no harm to anyone and his
persecution for nothing more than simply expressing his opinions is completely unacceptable.
The CEMB condemns the Kuwaiti government’s imprisonment of Al-Baz and calls on the government to immediately and unconditionally release him and all those being held on blasphemy charges.
