Try to digest this recent article from Muslim Spice *gag gag*.  My question for y'all is, what is more disturbing here, the mind of the man who wrote this piece, or the hadiths that he used to justify his position?.  Personally, I am leaning toward the latter.

WTF! Lets have a good laugh at slappin women around. Slap your daughters because it makes your fuckin Prophet giggle!  _

    Quote
In another narration Jabir b. ‘Abdullah (RA) reported: Abu Bakr (RA) came and sought permission to see Allah’s Messenger (S). He found people sitting at his door and none amongst them had been granted permission, but it was granted to Abu Bakr and he went in. Then came ‘Umar and he sought permission and it was granted to him, and he found Allah’s Apostle (S) sitting sad and silent with his wives around him. He (‘Umar) said: I would say something which would make the Holy Prophet (S) laugh, so he said: Messenger of Allah, I wish you had seen (the treatment meted out to) the daughter of Khadija when you asked me some money, and I got up and slapped her on her neck. Allah’s Messenger (S) laughed and said: They are around me as you see, asking for extra money. Abu Bakr (RA) then got up went to ‘A’isha (RA) and slapped her on the neck, and ‘Umar stood up before Hafsa and slapped her saying: You ask Allah’s Messenger (S) which he does not possess. They said: By Allah, we do not ask Allah’s Messenger (S) for anything he does not possess. Then he withdrew from them for a month or for twenty-nine days…” (Bukhari, Book 9, #3506)

Yup I read that one a while back. Thats when the muslim Im debating with says hadith dont apply if they contradict the Quran. Then I say well it doesnt contradict the Quran because the Quran says beat your wives. Then they come back with "well you have to look at the whole thing and not take a verse out of context". Sometimes they slip up and quote a hadith that says the best of men are those who do not beat their wives. I suppose they are allowed to pick and choose which hadith they want to follow Wink Hmmm... last Muslim I remember having this convo with was my Mrs.

WTH?  I swear I never heard it in 17 years....at least not in it's entirety.  Or maybe I just had blinders on....hmmmm.

It is funny that when I read this and read the comments, I found myself yelling at the women commentators who were beating up on this fool, instead of the man who wrote this religion.  I mean, they can yell all they want at this bloke, but the elephant in the room (ie this sahih hadith) is still standing there!  I really think these Muslim women and Muslim feminists are fighting a battle they already lost.  I believe that "Muslim feminism" is an oxymoron.  Completely.

This is the whole Hadith. I didn't verify the citation I just found online, but I have read it before in Arabic:

Sahih Muslim, Book 004, Number 2127:

Muhammad b. Qais said (to the people): Should I not narrate to you (a hadith of the Holy Prophet) on my authority and on the authority of my mother? We thought that he meant the mother who had given him birth. He (Muhammad b. Qais) then reported that it was ''A''isha who had narrated this: Should I not narrate to you about myself and about the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)? We said: Yes. She said: When it was my turn for Allah''s Messenger (may peace be upon him) to spend the night with me, he turned his side, put on his mantle and took off his shoes and placed them near his feet, and spread the corner of his shawl on his bed and then lay down till he thought that I had gone to sleep. He took hold of his mantle slowly and put on the shoes slowly, and opened the door and went out and then closed it lightly. I covered my head, put on my veil and tightened my waist wrapper, and then went out following his steps till he reached Baqi''. He stood there and he stood for a long time. He then lifted his hands three times, and then returned and I also returned. He hastened his steps and I also hastened my steps. He ran and I too ran. He came (to the house) and I also came (to the house). I, however, preceded him and I entered (the house), and as I lay down in the bed, he (the Holy Prophet) entered the (house), and said: Why is it, O ''A''isha, that you are out of breath? I said: There is nothing. He said: Tell me or the Subtle and the Aware would inform me. I said: Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransom for you, and then I told him (the whole story). He said: Was it the darkness (of your shadow) that I saw in front of me? I said: Yes. He struck me on the chest which caused me pain, and then said: Did you think that Allah and His Apostle would deal unjustly with you? She said: Whatsoever the people conceal, Allah will know it. He said: Gabriel came to me when you saw me. He called me and he concealed it from you. I responded to his call, but I too concealed it from you (for he did not come to you), as you were not fully dressed. I thought that you had gone to sleep, and I did not like to awaken you, fearing that you may be frightened. He (Gabriel) said: Your Lord has commanded you to go to the inhabitants of Baqi'' (to those lying in the graves) and beg pardon for them. I said: Messenger of Allah, how should I pray for them (How should I beg forgiveness for them)? He said: Say, Peace be upon the inhabitants of this city (graveyard) from among the Believers and the Muslims, and may Allah have mercy on those who have gone ahead of us, and those who come later on, and we shall, God willing, join you.

It was blinders. I had them on too until I really decided to look and confront these hadiths. Its easier for muslim women to beat up on the messenger rather than the Messenger. Nothing to lose by accusing this blog writer of being a shit head but everything to lose if they direct their disgust at the Prophet. Muslims will jump through hoops to keep the Prophet as a saintly perfect human being in their mind. Hadiths and quranic verses are like an obstacle course they jump, duck and dive around to protect their faith from the ugly reality of its truth.

you are absolutely right, Pepe.  well said.

happymurtad, you were able to learn Arabic when you were Muslim?  Good for you.  can I ask how long you were Muslim for?  I wish I could say that I was able to walk away Arabic under my belt.  it really helps to debate if you know arabic....esp when debating purists (no so much w/ proggressives, but still helpful)

Dude, I studied this Hadith when I was a salafi because the scholars used to use it to show that the dead needed our prayers and could not answer our prayers. (Ya know, the whole wahabi taboo about “calling upon the dead.”) I read it sooo many times and not once did the fact that the 57 year old prophet hit his teenage “wife” in the chest till it hurt stand out to me.  Those blinders are so thick.

I was technically "born" a Muslim, if such a thing is possible. My parents were former NOI members who became sunni in the 60s. I got really serious in my early twenties and lived in Saudi Arabia and the gulf for almost 10 years, studying and working combined. My Arabic is pretty fluent--classical and gulf dialect.

Poe or not I love it. I just read it again and not a single person in the comments section could argue against the Hadith he listed to back up his message. They turn away from the ugly truth and attack the easy target which is the author.

Is "Muslim Spice" run by salafis?

By the title and looks of the website one would think it's run by ultra liberal muslims..

Or maybe their just trying to bait in muslim housewives who are looking for cooking recipes online. Grin

Honestly when I first saw the blog name of "Muslim Spice" I immediately associated it with porn, since there used to be a pay per view, porn channel on our cable called Spice Channel.  LOL.

I initially thought this was a blog run by Latin Muslims because of the name, and even though I still feel like this is a parody site I do think the name is trying to lure people into reading the site.

I think it could be a site that uses the outrageousness of the commentary and argument to startle people and then highlight how there is, actually scriptural support for these kinds of attitude.

If so then its actually quite a coherently structured, subtle and effective satirical effort.

On the other hand if its for real then it just proves that in many cases, aspects of Islamic attitude are simply beyond parody.
