  • Something I don't understand about the West versus East culture war
     OP - April 09, 2013, 03:11 PM

So when Muslims refer to evil 'The West' The are usually talking about America and Britain....exclusively. And they are usually talking about how inferior our culture and society is to theirs, or how are Western people do this and Western people do that and it's EVVVvvil.

What I don't understand is why America and Europe are singled out.

    1. America consists of Mostly christian or some other religion (even in only name), YET countries like Japan, China and Sweden are 90% atheist? Why don't Muslims attack those countries? You would think a Godless country would take priority over a one people associate themselves with Islam's cousin religion.  But you never hear Muslims talk about those countries which are perfectly fine functioning societies (China needs some work though).

    2. There are countries to the Far East, like South Korea, Japan, I guess China, and some parts of India (the middle class areas) engage in a culture similar to the US
Things such as: alcohol, music, women that show off their beauty proudly, secular thinking etc. Again! Why is always 'Westernize culture' referring to America and Europe.

just take a look at the Muslim majority countries in green.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Muslim-majority_countries

The rest of the world around it, engages in activities/LIFESTYLE/GOVERNING that they single out America for and call it 'Westernized'

Now I know the deep hatred from America comes from political fuck ups in the past, and them evil j00z because of the creation of Israel, I can get that. But I'm really baffled when Muslims say 'The West'. Singling out America and Europe for things like sexy women in commercials, alcohol, single women who raise kids alone, rape statistics, celebrity obsessions, trendy clothes or haircuts, or for not following the Islamic way of life etc.

Can someone explain to me why Muslims just ignore every other country when they refer to 'The West'?
I'm American but I don't think think the world should revolve around us.

    Blasphemy!  LOL!  J/K

I think America is just an easy target for hatred.  We are still the most powerful nation on the planet when it comes to worldwide military might and political/social/etc influence.

People are always gonna hate the top dawg.  Period.  Human nature.

To be honest, I think most Americans are just so insufferably ignorant of the world and world politics... and on top of that, arrogant in their attitude that America is/was always "the best nation on earth" to live in.  If I wasn't an American, I would probably hate us too.   Wink

America is still the superpower in the world...I suppose it's a dislike that such a non-muslim country, engaging in such things as exposed women; alcohol; liberal sex, can have so much power. Maybe it's a form of jealousy. Plus America does engage/advertise such behaviour more loudly than others imo...and the political stuff.

I'm thinking a few reasons to be honest.

1 - all the things the British empire and other European nations did back when it was acceptable to mostly everyone, to rob and control other nations (instead of on the sly)...plus America is simply the descendants of that legacy.

2 - The war is between Islam and Christendom and the Jews.  America is run by the jews and full of Christians.....you see where i am going with that one?

Plus what tabularasa said too, power.

They pick on America because the country has a history of interfering with matters in the Middle East. So, apart from the fact that other cultures also spread similar un-Islamic ideologies, they have a stronger reason to hate on America.

Also, another reason they refer to America, Britain, Canada, etc etc when they use the word "West" is because their cultures are most familiar to them.

For some reason that offends me :/ It's as ignorant as if you went around assuming every Muslim country is run like Saudi Arabia.

Apparently I missed the memo of a culture war going on. There are a lot of reasons why people don't like each other. War, conspiracies, empire? But to summarise it all and call it a "culture war"?
I remember a friend telling me that Egyptian media was corrupting the pure Arab world. As if. She's implying the media in Egypt is too provocative (you might be surprised at how modern/sexual even the old movies can be). To her, a culture war could be between burqa clad Saudi and bikini girls in Egyptian movies.
Also, Turkish media (which is worshipped in the mid east) often has night club scenes, people drinking alcohol/glasses of wine with every meal and very "exposed" women.
Western conservative Muslims might be the ones to feel threatened in their current Western surroundings, but that map you showed, they have no excuse to blame the West regarding "culture" because you can get all kinds of materials from within that region. Umm to quote you "It's as ignorant as if you went around assuming every Muslim country is run like Saudi Arabia.", Yeah it is.
See I would say my parents are worried about us learning that casual sex is cool, or that showing our legs is cool because we live in a place where both things are cool. But in Iraq my grandpa had issues with my clothes and told me not to copy the girls on TV (Which was Arabic TV). To post a picture of the entire Mid East...I mean I'd like to ask which groups would specifically make this an issue? To make your accusation more legit.
Sounds like a conversation two lovers like Pammie Geller and Osama bin Laden will have as they prepare to go to sleep...

Realistically speaking, no Muslim can be content with the status quo, until the whole world believes and acts upon Islam. The Quran thinks of itself as the seal of thought, the last revelation and the final one. Thus it is unalterable. But, it also claims that it is total, so it is a timeless ideology about everything and for everyone. The five first letters of totalitarianism, in other words. So contempt towards the West isn't recommended, but commanded.

Having said that, one might ask why the United States and the UK are singled out? The anti war-movement, which I can't stand btw, would tell you it is because these two superpowers have been recklessly militant or imperialist towards the Muslim world. I despise the anti war-movement, because their rhetoric have striking resemblances to those of extreme Islamists. I sometimes suspects the two poles of feeding of each other intellectually.

The reason the United States and the UK are singled out by angry Muslims, was very neatly described by Osama Bin Laden in his Al Qaeda manifesto. Item 3 in his case against the West was the prevention of a genocide in East Timor (in 2001) by the US and the UN (or in Bin Laden's words, the crusaders and the imperialists). The US had prevented Indonesia from annexing a Portuguese speaking Christian country into Islamic rule and annihilating its Christian population.

For this Bin Laden said, the West had corrupted the kind of Islamic totality I was mentioning. The US had hindered the gradual growth of the Islamic caliphate. Nauseating enough. Then the next usual thing you'll read on the news is Western leftists and "moderate" Muslims picking up Bin Ladens rhetoric and calling the US imperialists for their foreign activities (as in stopping genocides etc). I can't tell you how much this annoys me.

So, to come to my point in a messy post. I think Muslims hate on the US/UK because, not only do they represent an antidote to Islamic fascism, but they actively go out and prevent it from spreading.

Believe those who are seeking the truth. Doubt those who find it.

The culture war I'm referring too is.
Don't do this because it's too Western, and for no other reason other than, it's from another country and we hate said country and their culture so don't copy them. I'm sure there are Arabic girls and other Arabic people that maybe drink alcohol or show their legs off, but more often or not their ways will usually(but not always) be referred back to 'Oh they are copying 'Western girls' as a way to blame from lack of following conservatism. And I'm trying to understand what's up with this terminology 'Western culture', or being too 'Westernize'. I watch anime and listen to Japanese music but no one tells me I'm too Japanized, stop doing that! Listen to country music and watch 'Dancing with the Stars' like a good American.   wacko
