Thanks Jila, only two minutes in and I already agree with that woman who said "the government gives us our islamic rights better than our sharia law"

I understand the point, but isn't that a bit of a joke considering that Australian law =/= Islamic law, while sharia is. IOW, sharia does give them their Islamic rights. What she's really saying is that her Islamic rights aren't good enough for her.

Precisely. It's annoying how Muslims do that. It's lying to yourself. What she meant was kuffar laws give us better rights than Islamic shari'ah.

I remembered this program when I came across the thread about the channel 4 doco on women and the shari'ah courts in the UK. How is this any different from a shari'ah court?

Watching these divorce courts, they seem extremely stressful, embarrassing, and condescending.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

yes Oz. you are right, that is exactly what she is saying. and i fully agree with her

it often takes women years to wake up from the delusion that Islam affords them better human rights than basic secular laws of "the land"

Why do people have these fictions, these hurdles in their heads?

Why do they need someone - a male - to do a magic ritual so that they are divorced in "god's" eyes?

What is wrong with an Australian divorce? No woo?

I know what she means, but the Aussie rights rooted in secular notions of equality & individual rights are not in any way Islamic. She just says that to save face, because Muslims like to claim that everything good in the world is just a version of Islam. Cognitive dissonance down under!
