  • Debunking Signs of Qiyamah
     OP - April 12, 2013, 01:05 PM

There may be an existing thread to this... I wanted to know everyone's thoughts on the signs of qiyamah. There are a number of Muslims I know that hold on to Islam because of these and their belief they are coming true.

I found this on this website: http://www.muslimaccess.com/ebooks/signs_of_qiyamah.asp

    QIYAMAH WILL COME WHEN...
Hadhrat Abu Musa Ash’ari (R.A.) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, "Qiyamah will come...

When it will be regarded as a shame to act on Qur'aanic injunctions.
When Islam will become a stranger (unwanted religion).
When malice and hate will become common among people.
When Islamic Knowledge (ILM) is lifted up.
    When Time will become old.
When people’s life spans become short.
When months and years and foodstuff will be devoid of blessing, (i.e. appear to be very short and less).
When untrustworthy people will be regarded as trustworthy and the trustworthy will be regarded as untrustworthy.
When the liars will be regarded as truthful and the truthful will be regarded as liars.
When violence, bloodshed and anarchy become common.
When people will boast upon their palatial mansions.
When women with children become displeased (on account of them bearing off-spring) and barren women remain happy (on account of having no responsibility of off-spring).
When oppression, jealousy and greed become the order of the day.
When people begin to die in large numbers.
When lies prevail over the truth.
When people dispute over petty issues.
When people blatantly follow their passions and whims.
When decisions will be given on mere conjecture (wild-guesses).
When there will be a scarcity of crops despite abundant rains.
When the fountains of Knowledge run dry and the floods of ignorance burst forth.
When it will be hot in Winter (and vice versa).
When immorality overtakes shamelessness and is perpetrated publicly.
When the length of days is stretched, i.e. a journey of a few days is covered in a matter of a few hours.
When orators and lecturers lie openly.
When legislation in matters pertaining to my right (Deen) is handed over to the worst elements in my Ummat, and if people accept them and are satisfied with their findings, then such persons will not smell the fragrance of Jannat.
When the off-spring become a cause of grief and anger (for their parents).
    (KANZUL UMMAAL)

I wondered if these are based on sahih hadiths and if so which ones? .

Also lots of the above if you really think about them are not really prophetic. Things like orators lying openly, causing grief for parents, immortality and shamelessness taking over (look at the Romans pre-Islam), people dying in large numbers (Pompeii?), fighting over petty things  etc has aways always been prevalent in society.

Also who gets to interpret statements likes "when the length of days are stretched" to travel times?? Thats not the first thing I would think on reading that sentence.

Also people are living longer lives, not shorter. This might change again in future generations but the point is life expectancy changes due to economical and medical challenges facing society..

Christians also have signs of the Apocalypse...

Okay, I will give you three major problems with all of these signs.

    a) They are always in a list. Plus, they are almost never properly sourced. Sometimes, each and every hadith is from a different source and it is impossible or too timely to verify.

    b) If you notice, they are all vague, and they simply have a general theme of things that are going against Islam. The fact of the matter is that things go wrong in the world all the time. No matter what adherent to what faith you are, there will always be differences, when the number of adherents increase. So no, this is not a miracle. Btw, our lifespans are getting longer. In other words, when you really think about it, he didn't make 50 predictions. He only made one : Things will go bad. Hola! The Prophet must be the messenger of God now.

    c) People interpret many hadiths to their own liking.

    Mina

Forget about the Hadithal sourcing, you'd be much better off looking at pre-Islamic texts such as the Sybilline Oracles, and the various Jewish and Christian wisdom, prophetic and apocalyptic traditions, canonical, apocryphal and pseudepigraphical.

The text that you cited is a compendium of very old, pre-Islamic boilerplate in a new wrapping.
