    (I was meant to post this 12 days ago but somehow got busy)
    So I found this facebook status about april fools, and how it's haram to pull a fun little prank.

    As we all know, this is the first April and people are either planned or are planning to tease / cheating people that day. But before you take this step, you must first ask yourself: "it is an act that is allowed in Islam or contradicts the Islam?".

    First and foremost, you have to think about that lying is a very serious thing in Islam. As Allah Almighty says in Qur'an:

    Meaning terms translated: "Truly Allah guides not one who violates (Allah's Love and Limits) and lying." [40:28]

    Allah the Almighty says in another verse:
    "O you who believe! Fear Allah and be with those who are true (to words and deeds) "[9:119]
    Our beloved Prophet (Salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

    "The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks so he's lying when he promises something so comply he not, when he is entrusted with something as he breaks his trust." [Reported by Bukhari and Muslim 32 89th]

    Based on this evidence, we can see how serious it is to lie.
    As we all know, is April's fool to lie and cheat people. But it is not the only thing that makes it haram. To imitate non-Muslims are not allowed.

    Our beloved Prophet (Salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
    "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." [Abu Dawud 3512]

    Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rh) said about this hadith:
    "This shows clearly that it is haraam to imitate / emulate them (non-Muslims and those who carry out non-Islamic acts) .." [Iqtida '-Siraat al-Mustaqeem, 237]


    I see that lying is wrong, but it's not like you're not gonna tell the person that it's April fools. Also the mimicking the non muslims bit.. That's just silly, some things from Islam is also taken from Christianity..

    And besides, too late for me on that April Fools fatwa.....I had already way too much fun with the big yellow roll of "CRIME SCENE DO NOT CROSS" Police tape and sidewalk chalk that I bought at the surplus store.    Wink  Cheesy

    Islam is going to die as a culture in a few hundred years because people are going to be more impressed with what fun things presented by other cultures. Funny Islam, is the second biggest religion. Yet no one gives a shit about Islamic holidays like Ramadan outside of Muslim majority countries. But so many other holidays have had such an influence on countries around the world. So much so some Muslims are beginning to feel threatened and devoting entire campaigns to keep them out. It's only a matter of time.

    the only way I can see that not happening is if the Islamic World can pump out some form of a reform movement reaaaaaally fast.  If not, I think its doomed to fail

    Thanks fuck I deconverted in my teens becuz as a muslim I wud have lost out on all the fun things in life like booze, studying philosophy and science,sex, going clubbing partying,   being friends with whoever the hell I want etc. 
    In my opinion a life without curiosity is not a life worth living

    It's because those other holidays are so much more fun than the Islamic ones! And not only that, Muslims insist on following the lunar calendar, so nobody knows when their holidays are anyway. Even Muslims themselves can't agree on when Ramadan officially begins from the sighting of the moon. All that nitpicking over when we get to begin starving ourselves? No one cares.

    It's funny that Islam revolves around the Moon and you would think they would be pioneers in space exploration and astrology .
    Didn't Saudi Arabia get in trouble some year for apparently announcing Ramadan prematurely, and a bunch of people were in an uproar over it.
    Doesn't make any sense to me.

     Cheesy Try every single year ever since the history of Saudi Arabia. There has never been a year, ever, when Muslims agreed on the start/end of Ramadan or eid. Ever. Some divine plane if you ask me.

    Any festival other than Eid-Al-Adha or Eid-Al-Fitr is essentially haram. No birthday parties, no anniversary parties, no graduation parties, no nothing, lest we be immitating the Kuffar.

    As a kid I was stumped as to why my life, and my family seemed so boring. I would always wonder why my (non-muslim) friends and the people at school seemed to have much more fun than me, and I'd often daydream for hours straight due to boredom, but ever since I became more liberal in thinking and eventually an ex-muslim, I finally realise why my family is incredibly dull. Islam.

    Not only that, but the two Eids are always a pain in the ass and not fun at all. Go to Eid prayer first thing in the early morning? Awesome. Listen to the Imam ramble on about Islamic stuff for an hour? I daydream about sex and music instead. Give the family and relatives fake hugs after? I never hug any of my family, and I don't count fake hugs either. Go home and have South Asian sweets, and eventually dinner with the family? Thank the Gods for being original...NOT!

    So how do they decide then? Does everyone just hold the event when they feel like it?

    It depends on which "system" you follow. 


    Saudia Arabia I think sets a date in advance by looking at some astronomical calendar to see when the new moon should appear and the mosques that follow Saudia Arabia have their Eid then.

    On the other hand if you follow the other "system" which my family used to follow a bunch of bearded imams sit outside the night before staring at the sky to see if they can see a new moon. We basically wait until midnight to see until the beardos announce yay nor nay.

    If I recall correctly there is a difference of opinion on whether your allowed to use telescopes or just your naked eye because the Prophet didn't use telescopes and it's better to follow in his example.

    And in a city the mosques that follow Saudia Arabia have it one day and the mosques that follow the other system have it another day.

    Haha. Well, The Saudis follow the Hadith that says that if anyone claims to have seen the moon and they swear to it, then that is enough. (obviously I've paraphrased that.) There is always conveniently some random bedouin who claims to have seen the moon on the same day that the government has projected. From my experience, other groups prefer the local sighting method. So If they don't see it in their particular community, then they don't take into regard what other countries have claimed to have seen. Still others rely solely on astronomical calculations, so the moment the moon is "born" they consider it to be a new month. I have never witnessed a year when every Islamic country and community started and finished Ramadan at the same time.

    This is true, the Japanese celebrate Christmas like it's Valentines Day, thus adapting it completely away from it's origins yet revelling in its funniness. Should Muslim's not use facebook, wine glasses, speak anything but Arabic etc. cause they are non Islamic?

    With the Japanese celebrating Christmas and even atheists and seculars celebrating Christmas, I realize a part of Christianity's heritage has been really preserved in some way. If not celebrated the religious way, it is acknowledged by so many people, and so many people get pumped for Christmas. Which I think is what religions should do, is promote their religions by being inclusive not exclusive, and festive. Islam doesn't have much in the way of culture to 'share' with the world. Jews got smart and promote Hanukkah along with Christmas even adopting some of it's customs, so despite being a small population here in the US you always see Hanukkah things around during Christmas and the two are associated with each other.

    Like I commented before, Muslims seem to want to push the modesty culture but the virgin fad died a long time ago and no one gives a shit about preserving women's precious vaginal dignity.

    Yup, even I have celebrated Diwali with the Hindu Soc at my uni, it was great fun with the bangra dancing afterwards and the food, indeed one of the committee members of the Hindu Soc was an Indian Christian, but she was part of both communities. Another Indian Christian went along to it too because it is a shared culture and therefore a cultural festivity. Would be so so so happy to see Ramadan and the Eids be inclusive and FESTIVE not like a funeral.

    In the gulf countries, there is starting to be a trend to market and capitalize off of Ramadan. Shopping sales, iftar buffet tents that cater to foreigners, and television series are all becoming popular around that time of the year. There is still nothing fun about those holidays to broaden their appeal. Killing lambs and starving yourself are no one's idea of fun I guess.

    Thing is Happymurtad Lent used to be a heck of a lot more hard than it is now as well, and it's ritual 'giving up something for lent' has reduced in terms of what people do. Originally I think at least in the early days of the established church you would have to give up meat, fish and eggs and also culinary condiments and spices. So you would have bean stew that wouldn't be appetising in the least instead of the usual meal. Could see ramadan slightly softening with an allowance of water to drink and also perhaps more of an approach to the live on 1 pound a day kind of thing until the final day, instead of abstaining from food altogether. I mean haven't Muslims already made a mockery of Ramadan already? The richer people have huge meals in the evening and the morning when you are supposed to just have what you would usually have for breakfast and dinner when the fasts are broken.

    Also swear I heard something somewhere ages ago where a Muslim group said that instead of sacrificing a lamb that you used to do, the richer that do not rely on livestock for their living should sacrifice something of more value to them for their income. Basically revising it to sacrificing a thing of value and of need for livelihoods than sacrificing an animal which would be of little consequence to a non-livestock farmer.

    Most things in Islam tend to be of the take it or leave it sort. The rules are so specific and rigid that I could never see them changing. Everyone knows that once you've had even a sip of water, you are in deep trouble for breaking your fast.

    And that is the thing. Islam is built around fear. Everything is done in a state of "fear of Allah;" nothing is meant to be fun or enjoyable. But fear only works when people believe it and think they have no other choice.

    I know that HM, my boyfriend's brother made their mum quite upset for not fasting in Ramadan much when he was doing a placement in London over the summer and was not at home. Thing is if they were not at school during Ramadan their parents let them sleep longer during the day and be up at night where they would eat and eat anyways so thus becoming nocturnal dwellers and effectively not having to fast at all. It is the thin edge of the wedge, but it is still there creeping and they know it, they just are in denial.
