  • How readily did you move onto non-halal meat and alcohol?
     OP - April 30, 2013, 09:33 PM

Sorry if this thread has been done but I'm curious. For me, it took a while to break down such strong barriers which had been in place for many years. I do now eat non-halal meat. It's so much more convenient for me. However I haven't touched pork nor do I ever think I will. Alcohol is a bit different for me. I touched the stuff as a muslim and felt really guilty about it. I don't drink excessively now but I don't have that guilt now. It's more of a choice, I can drink that if I want to and this feels somewhat liberating and the fact that I do now drink tells me that I have indeed let go of this part of my past and that apostatizing doesn't feel so surreal anymore.

EDIT: Please move if it's in the wrong forum. I couldn't find a more appropriate one? and this counts as an outlook I guess

I broke both those rules while I still considered myself a Muslim.

Basically, I went through a really long period of Islam was revealed in the context for its day. This was the only way I could reconcile Islam with my morality, especially when looking at the Koran and Hadith in detail.

By the time I was in my 20s, I would drink without feeling guilty.
Pork... truth be told, I probably felt more social guilt than personal guilt. So, I avoided it for a while. For whatever social reason, many of the Muslims where I grew up would drink, but none would eat pork. But once I was past 20, I didn't feel much actual guilt for eating pork.  I tended not to do it to not look bad, but if there was a pepperoni pizza, I'd just eat it.

I think because I grew up without pork, I don't really like it... and so if there are other options, I generally choose them.
Though, I still enjoy a breakfast sausage.

Giving up Islam though definitely feels freer. But yes, I remember my struggles as a young Muslim with alcohol and pork. The guilt I felt in my later teens and early 20s.

Bacon. How can anyone refuse good quality dry cured bacon?
    Especially smoked.
In a sandwich with thick-sliced granary bread.
With lettuce, slices of tomato and mayonnaise.

Hang on. I'll be be off-line for a little while.

Bacon is good. The only time I don’t like it is if it is when I am craving something that tastes good on its own and the bacon just ends up overpowering it.

I was Shia, and we ate gelatine while my sunni friends were so careful, checking ingredient by ingredient. First our scholars said that normal gelatine is halal, and then they said even meat gelatine is halal after it becomes processed. So by the end,  was buying starburst gummy stuff while my friends were like :O What you doing bro! lol. But I considered those halal so...Alcohol was TOTOALLY off limits for me because I was taught it was bad by the effects it has. I had never even smelt it. I saw it as something really unhealthy, and still do. Don't see myself ever being a drinker but I want to know what being drunk feels like.

After a year or so of thinking there is no god and with strong influence from someone, I bought a couple of pork products. It satisfied my curiosity so I wont go out of my way until there is something I actually wanna try.

Alcohol, much later, I really wanted to try, so I ended up trying it in foods first, then I bought 5 flavours of absolut vodka and mixed my own drinks and realised I love the vanilla one. I hated the alcohol in tiramissu though. I'm still curious to try stuff and see if there's anything else I might like Smiley

I remember the first time I had a drink I went out with friends, one of whom I used to work with.   Really nice guy, anyways, I had told him I was questioning and I remember when we all ordered and the lady asked if we wanted anything to drink it just came out vodka coke.     I remember the look of surprise on his face, and us laughing.  I just wish I coulda gone for the bbq pork that Brazilian joint knows how to cook em, alas it was 2 weeks before I got that in my system mmmmmmm.

I wonder if an introduction via the very best will help?  Really good madiera, syrah, welsh whisky, the very best italian ham?

The alcohol thing must be difficult. For me, it isn't a case of using it as a drug in order to get drunk. I like wine with a meal or a good quality beer in the evening. I wouldn't use a £45.00 bottle of Whisky to get me drunk, I'd have one glass and savour it.
Some of the drinks mentioned in the thread are kind of mass produced industrial products. The only real purpose of them is obliteration.
I'd agree, if you're going to try, try the good stuff.

I'm in the process of becoming a vegetarian. I have always found it difficult to eat red meat, especially pork. It is scientifically proven that there is nothing wrong with eating pork, but still muslims are not convinced. The letter of the quran weights heavier than science.

Alcohol has never been a problem. I like to drink wine. I have never understood the argument against drinking alcohol. Alcohol is beneficial when it is consumed with care especially red wine.

I ate non halal meat days or a week after I left Islam.

That feeling when you don't have to worry about whether that restaurant or candy is halal before eating it.

    Feels. So. Liberating.

Unlike chicken and beef I feel pork tastes either really good or really bad.

If I'm gonna eat pork I'll only go to the awesome sandwich shop I found that prepares the meat fresh or I won't eat it at all.

BTW what type pork have you tried?  So far I've tried bacon strips(don't like so much) and a grilled pulled pork sandwich(love at first bite)

Planning on trying pork belly sandwich next..

There are many different ways "pig meat" can be prepared.

Bacon Strips, Ham, Pulled pork, Pork belly.

Based on my experience I recommend eating a pulled pork burger from a place that specializes in sandwiches.

If prepared right pork tastes really good. Don't let just one experience shape your entire views on this lovely meat    piggy

Low threshold indeed, but I generally drink alone (unless I'm at a rave or club) at which point an empty wallet is more of a worry than losing time.

I'm underage and I can't drink. I've tried beer, it tasted horrible. No thank you. I'll drink good liquor when I'm of age. I was always eating haram food, but with a guilty conscience. I now eat whatever I want without feel guilty. Yay!   dance

I've heard that absinthe tastes horrible and the main purpose of it is to get you drunk quickly (due to the high alcohol content)

It seems peculiar to absinthe. I can drink Jack all night, but a couple of absinthes and it's over. K.O.

That's what I used to think about beer when I first tried it.

No, you haven't tried beer.  You can only say that once you've sampled at least 100 different types of beer  (lager, ale, stout, bitter etc.) of various brewers and not just the cheap and nasty ones mass-produced.

Start with cider and work from there.
