  • More than 500 British imams protest against gay marriage
     OP - May 19, 2013, 01:10 PM

More than 500 imams have joined forces to protest against David Cameron’s plans for gay marriage in an unprecedented intervention from the British Muslim community.

Leaders representing tens of thousands of worshippers at mosques across the country, have signed a joint letter to The Sunday Telegraph accusing the Government of attacking “the cornerstone of family life”

It is the first time that Muslim leaders have made a collective intervention on the issue and underlines the strength of feeling among ethnic minority voters.

Organisers said Muslim opposition should be seen as a challenge to David Cameron’s claims to be acting in the interests of “equality” and “diversity”.

In the letter – published as MPs prepare for their final Commons debate on the Government’s same-sex marriage bill – they quote the Koran and say they are fulfilling a “sacred trust to God” by airing their views.

Echoing comments by Anglican and Roman Catholic clergy, they describe marriage as a “sacred contract between a man and a woman” which they say “cannot be redefined”.

They also voice concerns about the status of teachers in faith schools and claim Muslim parents will be “robbed” of the opportunity to bring their children up in line with the faith.

Organisers acknowledged that the Muslim voice had been virtually “silent” on the issue thus far but said they now felt compelled to speak.

Imam Suliman Gani, of Tooting Mosque in south London, who led efforts to gather the signatures, said Muslim leaders “salute” the Christian clergy who had been vocal opponents of the Government on the issue.

He said many imams had been wary of airing their views publicly because of the negative way Islam is often portrayed, leaving them believing they would be ignored.

But, significantly, he said that because Christianity appeared to be under “attack”, Muslim leaders felt compelled to enter the fray.

Referring to a letter published in The Daily Telegraph earlier this year, he said: “There were 1,000 priests who signed a letter – yet they have been ignored so we felt we had to do this.

“I salute those priests who have taken a stand.”

He added: “The Muslim community will take this issue very, very seriously because now the Government has interfered with family.

“To us that is like taking children away from their mother: it will definitely have an effect on Mr Cameron’s vote.

“We cannot understand how it was possible that this was introduced so fast – but we cannot give up.

“We celebrate diversity, we want to have a peaceful coexistence with all people but our main concern in the mosques is the way the Government is changing the definition of marriage and what impact that will have on the children.”

The letter has been signed by 505 imams and mosque chairmen from London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leicester, Luton, Preston, Blackburn, Burnley, Dewsbury, Newcastle, Bradford, Huddersfield and Nottingham among other cities.

Ok I LOL'ed when I read Cameron wanting "Equality" or representing "diversity", who actually believes that crap?

    But that's a separate issues.

It's funny how the imams state you can't redefine what constitutes marriage in a country that already has redefined it, aside from sexual preferences, in comparison to an Islamic marriage,

A marriage so sacred a man need only state I divorce you and the sacredness is done with.  A marriage in which he can redefine marriage across 4 women at a time.  A union so sacred he may sleep with slaves if he could have them.  Sacred indeed.

Better the devil you know, is that how they are playing it? saluting the value of priests who are so against gay marriage, but so hush hush about child sexual abuse...a thing imams use when trying to destroy the same priests they now salute?

I sincerely hope they are as ignored as they feared they would be.  I sincerely hope that Cameron sees them in the same way he sees the disabled, the young, and the struggling poor, as not even worthy of note when they dissent or give voice to the anger they feel at the government.  On this issue I hope he is as much of a bastard as he is on others.

LOL, I love the threat about Cameron losing votes.... Cheesy  I don't know any conservative muslim supporters really.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

Of course it's convenient for imams to forget centuries of colonialist domination when necessary — 'people of the book, you say?' Contemptible, utterly contemptible. I'm almost convinced that Islam was a deviant sect of Christianity that sought to enforce suppression over the masses — and now they champion a bourgeois morality to propagate their views.

The difference here is that Cameron rather prefers not to upset the Evangelical bloc in his own party to the point where they withdraw their support completely; as gay marriage is rather upsetting them at the moment, they're likely to welcome as many allies as they can get.

They're who Warsi is there to represent, I'm guessing; Muslim Conservative politicans may mainly be spotted at local government level. Purely anecdotally, the small, not particularly ethnically diverse town I live in has had at least two Muslim Conservative counsellors for a few years now (and at one point had a father-and-son team, with the father being the mayor).

As an aside, this website may or may not have comedy value.

Yea, I guess I should have factored in that my circle of muslims to base claims off of, isn't just linked to me by cultural background, but also by socioeconomic status, so the likelihood of them specifically voting conservative, even if cameron doesn't allow gay marriage to pass, is extremely unlikely.

Oh, how very noble of them to want to help defend the poor Christians. Yeah right. Pull the other one, mate. Cheesy

Utter drivel. It's nothing like taking children away from their mother. Hey, they can even have two mothers if you bring in gay marriage. Gotta be good. parrot

So? Are they afraid that their kids (or wives) will come out of the closet when this law is passed?
