Only one of them is willing to show his face. That is not the same guy that founded the Council of Ex-Muslims of Morocco and is now in hiding is it (Imad Habib)?

I think it is a different guy.....

No it's the same guy who did the moroccan council of ex-muslims. He introduced himself in the beginning of the video. Smiley I really like this video, because it gives hope to see that a lot of people from maghreb are actually not afraid to say what's on their mind even though they have to hide themselves to protect. I just wished it was a little bit like that in Algeria, my home country. Morocco is more open-minded and I hope Algeria will follow progressively the same path as the guy wanted to draw for the citizens.

Well not all of Morocco is that open minded to be fair, I come from a smaller village (now more like a town) and although in comparison to some stricter islamic countries, it's a bit less harsh, it's still pretty close minded, judgmental, abusive, and sexist.

Also although it was wonderful hearing moroccans talking of their lack of belief, especially since there are not a lot of moroccan ex muslims on this forum, it was sad not seeing any women on this video.  I guess discussing with strange men in public would have been inappropriate, or there just simply aren't that many female ex muslims yet in morocco.

I know they exist, have stumbled on some blogs, and of course I am one, but still, I would love to see more.   cool2

I am Moroccan, I don't know much about Algeria but I always thought they would be more open minded than us. Could it be how history shaped our outlook and perhaps our behaviour.the way colonialism and perhaps the mistrust of ex colonialism masters have driven Islam closer to the masses and left intellectually poor clinging onto it like it's the only thing that matters.
They can not possibly believe it's here to stay as there children become more educated there mind will wonder off and perhaps leave religion for good.
I always believe if someone came up to you and said 'I am a prophet sent from God to deliver a message' you would think another loony and so what's the difference between now and then in the 6th century is education. we were not educated at the time other wise we would say the same thing there goes another loony.

Hey Zest.  Nice to have another Moroccan on board.

I think it depends what colonial master you're referring too, since the biggest and longest coloniser of Morocco are the Arabs, rather than any Western nation.

They controlled everything, even down to the language , which was enforced in all public establishments.

In that sense I don't think Islam's hold is part of a rebellion against Western colonisers, as much as I think the 12 rebellions against Islam, and the massive crackdown in the history of Arab domination, pretty much wiped out the original Moroccan traditions.

Same thing happened throughout the West in terms of Christianity, even though small pockets are trying to claw back the original pagan traditions, so much of it was destroyed, and all that is left is generational attachment to the enforced religion.

My understanding is that a lot of North Africans today are descendants of Arabs who immigrated from Arabia, and there's been a lot of interbreeding between Arabs and Berbers throughout the generations.

To some extent yes, but from my research it suggests that genetic tests show that Berbers have less connection to Arabs than originally thought.  Some might have mixed, but Berbers are quite anti-miscegenation as a rule.

From what I read the Arabization of Morocco was more cultural, than genetic mixing, and Berbers share more genetic markers with Western Eurasian/Iberian traits, and very little with Arabs.

Was quite interesting to be honest, as I had thought the same.

Oh, and yes, you are right that current Moroccans are generally split between Berber descendants and Arab descendants, and a few in the mixed category, but generally unmixed.
