  • Nearly half of British children can’t swim – and it’s their parents' fault’

    Quote
Forty per cent of British children cannot swim, according to new figures, and it is up to their parents to make sure that they learn this important life skill, Rebecca Adlington, the Olympic medallist, has said.
While 25 per cent of parents believe it is the responsibility of schools, and the government, to teach children to swim, Adlington, who won two gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games and two bronze medals in 2012, said: “Parents forget that swimming is a life skill, and they need to take a bit of responsibility.”
British parents are failing to meet that responsibility, however. While 60 per cent of parents admitted in the survey commissioned by Speedo that they worried about their children drowning as a result of poor swimming skills, nearly half of those questioned did not believe learning to swim was an important life skill.
And nearly three quarters of British children had never had a swimming lesson, or been taught by their parents. This results in one in ten children experiencing an accident in the water due to lack of swimming experience, the survey found.

Kids are missing out, so much fun to go swim in the beach or pool

How many of you don't know how to swim?

    Couldn't swim until I was 10.

    Now I love it!

Everyone should have the opportunity to learn how to swim.

A while back I read an article about how the majority of African-Americans cannot swim and that it's mainly down to financial reasons, i.e. cannot afford to pay to use the public pool or for swimming lessons.

    I'm almost 20 and I can't swim either.

If watching videos of sports helped you to learn to play them then teams in FIFA should be filled with soccer moms.

It's pointless to even make a video on teaching people to swim.   Only way you can learn is when someone trains you.

Is it like riding a bike? i.e. you never forget? I did some swimming when I was in primary school, was just starting to learn how to tread water. Never had the opportunity to get back into it since the age of 11, so I haven't swam for 30 odd years now. Don't have a clue what would happen if I jumped into a pool now.

lol its easy to swim underwater because you don't have to worry abut staying afloat. Once you learn to stay afloat, the rest is all easy

yes it is like riding a bike. Once you learn how to tread water you already are at 90% of the lesson.  I actually learned how to swim by myself at the pool. Just practice treading and once you can stay afloat its just moving your arms and legs at the same time.
