  • Freuds personal philosophy - No sex after the age of 40

I've read a serious biography of Freud, where the author claims that Freud hadn't have sex with his wife after his 40th birthday. Because he was not cheating her, he died without having sex after that. Why has he chosen such a philosophy? Was he disgusted by all the sex issues he heard from his patients?

He was experimenting with cocaine. Maybe he had some sort of a side effect or smth.
Honestly, that's the only explanation that I have. He may've got rid of his libido on purpose too - to figure out certain things in human mind.

Lol my friends sister is of the firm belief that people shouldn't have sex after the age of 30 since it's disgusting from that point on.

I can only imagine she walked in on her parents or something and hasn't been able to shake the imagery.  Grin

As to Freud, maybe it was the cocaine use, or maybe like my sister's friend, there was some kind of imagery he couldn't shake either.  Grin

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

Cocaine and other drugs widely available back then really killed the sex drive, maybe that's part of it?

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

She could be ugly. Hm, I searched on cocain effects on erection and found these:

    Quote
There may be 2 reasons that cocaine itself causes erectile dysfunction. One reason is that cocaine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning that it causes blood vessels to constrict, and blood vessels in the penis need to be dilated in order for an erection to occur. A second reason is that cocaine interferes with the body's production of enzymes that are needed for an erection to occur, namely nitric oxide, and nitric oxide synthase, and myeloperoxidase; this effect has been studied and observed in rat models. Finally, as you already stated, it is also very possible that substances mixed into the cocaine may also be causing the erectile dysfunction.

Let's start with the opiates, such as heroin, methadone and so on.  All of these are very hard on male erectile strength, sabotaging it in many different ways.  Some of these drugs should be called Erection Killer, Anti-Viagra, Castratanol or something similar.  One study  looked at heroin addicts in treatment with methadone or buprenorphine and found that almost half reported erectile dysfunction, 24% saying mild to moderate and 18% severe. [1]  Of course, that assumes that you survive:  cocaine also is a fantastic clot builder and artery spasmer and heart attacks are not uncommon. [2]

ps. Freud experimented not longer than two years with cocain, I'm not sure if this is enough to get full erectile dysfunction.

All hail Foucault when it comes to this topic; Freud looks tame in comparison.

Just looked up Foucault. Can't believe I've never heard of him before.

He's unpalatably common in British academic institutions. I'm surprised, honestly. Anyhow, Discipline and Punish is a great book.

No sex over forty? perhaps he wanted to go on the caveman diet.

I am my own worst enemy and best friend, itsa bit of a squeeze in a three-quarter bed, tho. Unhinged!? If I was a dog I would be having kittens, that is unhinged. Footloose n fancy free, forced to fit, fated to fly. One or 2 words, 3 and 3/thirds, looking comely but lonely, till I made them homely.D

I plan on having sex for as long as I can get it up. It's one of the joys of life, why stop if you don't have to?

You are in luck, heard of Viagara - the King of Saudi Arabia is 89, he has your personal philosophy too.

My grandparents were having sex until the day my granddad died, according to grandma. My mum passed my granddad's eyes on to me, fingers crossed I also inherited his cock  Afro

I wish my family were that open about sex. Dare i even entertain the idea and the whole family will consider me satan's right hand man.

I come from a catholic family. When I was younger I found out my grandparents got married six months after meeting each other. I asked why they got married so fast and the reply was "Because we wanted to have sex".  Sex outside marriage was a no no. But yeah, there's always been a certain level of openness.

As for my last comment, my granddad had been dead a few years at this point. My grandparents had five children together and there's an almost 20 year age gap between my mum (the youngest) and my uncle (the oldest). I was talking to my grandma about it, I must of been 15 at the time, and on the topic of the age difference and ever going through a period of not having sex my grandma laughed and said in her thick Irish accent "Oh no, your granddad was a very handsome man". Which, you know, fair play. He was a good looking bloke even in his 70s.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
