Love is our oldest and deadliest impulse.

Love is the need to protect preserve and maintain at the cost of everything else.

    Love is a psychopath.

Love is a hormonal chemical reaction.

    Love is transcendent.

    Love is heaven.

    Love is hell.

    Love is transcendent.

    Love is a weakness.

Love is what makes live worth living.

    Love is hope.

    Love is selfish.

    Love is selflessness.

    And so on.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

For any Bollywood fans out there from which two classic movies are the following lines from?

    'Love is life.'

    and

    'Love is friendship'.

Anyway, 'love' like all social constructions is an attempt to sanctify human relationships, transcend mundane emotions and attach greater significance to a person/object, which when reflected upon is more than they ever deserved.

I also once heard that 'love is like a butterfly' .

Asking what is love is objectivating a feeling, emotion, perception. There 'is' no love anymore than there 'is' hate or anger or fear. These are words we associate with degrees of feeling.

Rather than ask 'what is love?' we should ask 'is there such a thing as love to begin with?' or better yet 'why love?' by which I mean why is it that we come to believe in the concept of love and form attachments with one another based upon symbolic interaction associated with cryptic language and how did this social construct develop in relation to our evolutionary heritage.

it's basically an illusion. evolution has tricked us into thinking we're 'in love' with people. quite a neat trick at that, though the side-effects, a lot of them time, not so great

    Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
    That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

Eh, Shakespeare isn't for children. You can't understand his work until you've grown up enough to have experienced and grasped what he writes about.

How old were you when you could truly appreciate it? I'd be surprised if you were under 13 or 14, most can't.
