  • Can someone explain to me what exactly tolerance is?
     OP - September 11, 2013, 09:21 PM

It seems like a dumb question. But where do you draw a line between being tolerant and accepting, and  being a complete push-over and having someone else make you give up something for the sake of their comfort. How much should you be willing to accommodate someone for the sake of tolerance, or should it be the other way around?

Tolerance is a liberal and postmodern construct that exalts the imaginary above everything else.

Tolerance is exactly what the word implies: being tolerant. It's not an inherently good thing 100% of the time. The real question, and one that requires much discussion,  should be how do we decide what to tolerate and what not to tolerate.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

I dont' drink alcohol but I won't try and stop you from drinking alcohol/I drink alcohol but I won't hold your jaws open and pour vodka down your throat

I don't agree with halal but don't won't try to stop you eating it/I don't agree with eating pork but won't try and stop you enjoying your sausage

I'm personally uncomfortable with homosexuality but I won't try and prevent a homosexual couple from being together/It's completely wrong that some are uncomfortable with homosexuality but some people are just like that

I personally don't like tattoos but I'm not going to discriminate against you because you have one/I love tattoos but I realise not everyone feels the same

And so on. Tolerance - live and let live. Only way to live in peace in a multicultural society.

`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

Haha believe me I enjoy a drink. I thought the examples I gave were a good idea of what tolerance is. You don't have to like it, but you put up with it.

Tolerance is a liberal and postmodern construct that exalts the imaginary above everything else.

Come on Schizo you'll have to do better than that.

    Lacanian triad:

Imaginary: Tolerance celebrated as a positive, diversity leading to pluralism.

Symbolic: Permissiveness via a deliberate refusal to impose your views on others, no matter how you feel about their actions or beliefs.

Real: Fascists, racists, other groups with offensive views and beliefs operate legally, gain power and garner respectability.

Pretty much, although I hasten to add that the permissiveness exhibited as part of the symbolic order is paradoxically seen as a good thing. For instance, we can't defeat capitalism so we may as well revert back to actively supporting the status quo, as did happen with some on the British left.

No, neither do I, though some of his concepts I will happily plunder to suit my own needs. We all do that sort of thing, right?

For me it's more of writing style. A lot of French philosophers treat philosophy as some kind of navel gazing priesthood so their works have long diatribes against other philosophers for pointless reasons and their writing style is turgid as a way of exhibitionism but I suppose that happens everywhere to some degree.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

I can understand that, though must add that sometimes reading a completely different writing style can open your eyes to other ways of thinking. Take William  Burroughs or Irvine Welsh, for instance. In terms of French philosophers, I have a real soft spot for Jacques Rancière.

Tolerance is smiling and nodding politely at what the other person erroneously believes whilst imagining that you're kicking the fucking shit out of him or her.

I hope that answers your questions.
