" I don't think it was brought up that Somali fisherman only became pirates because that was the only way they thought they could protect themselves against the bigger, more powerful countries that were fishing in their waters and dumping toxic wastes. Were they correct in their actions? Of course not. Is it excusable? Nope. But it isn't as if they did it because one day they thought to themselves, "to hell with it! I want to kill some white people."

Yes I have heard this before, and I agree with you. If dwindling fishing stocks were the issue, then one may understand if they held up fishing trawlers and just stole the fish, then they may have a point that we could resolve, but instead they hold people ransom and demand huge amounts of money upon threats of violence, so the 'we don't have enough fish' argument kinda loses its power.

There are dwindling fish stocks the world over, fishing communities dispersing, sinking into poverty or finding something else to do - like tourism, agriculture, drug-running or piracy.

It's about choices, and the Somalis have chosen piracy.

To be fair though, the somalis have no stable government so how would they set up shop for tourism? No tourists would go there. Not that I'm excusing what they're doing at all. I just think the Somali pirates didn't start with the intention of killing/taking hostages, but that's what they've turned to and they should suffer the consequences. I hope the new president can deal with them and Al-Shabaab and kick them the hell out of the country.

Just finished watching it and oh my god, that was just painful. I guess I knew of FGM but didn't know what it was exactly. I definitely plan on sharing this tomorrow on facebook. Hopefully it starts some sort of conversation on this side.

Trouble is, the easy bounty of piracy distracts Somali society from making the difficult decision to stop fighting one another. It's about collective intelligence. Heck, even bloodthirsty barbarians like the Japanese eventually stopped fighting one another, and bingo! Sony. Mitsubishi etc.

I put drug-running on my list of options because the Caribbean island I almost called home has decided it is easier to ship cocaine than plant coconut trees and go out at dawn and dusk every day for the first three years to check that coconut beetles aren't getting at them.

The collective intelligence the older generations possessed has been lost. It can be found again of course.

For me it was disturbing when one of the lads said he only cares what his religion says about it. You can't make up your own mind? Still, glad Ms Hussein confronted him and actually went about showing what the practise is. The scene in the tent where the child being cut was screaming was absolutely chilling, even though it wasn't shown. The expressions of the viewers would of said it all even if the screams hadn't.

I think the issue deals more with a divided community rather than a community that doesn't want to fix itself. They do, but everyone has a different way of going at it. Not to mention the fact that what was once Somalia has split into three different regions - one of the three operating on its own and actively attempting to claim independence from the rest (last I checked anyway). Remember the reason why the first government collapsed over twenty years ago was because of warring tribes, I think they may still have that issue. On top of that, most of the Somali youth that could help either have very little interest in their home country or have bigger issues within their own communities. Don't get me wrong. It is a mess over there, but I just don't think the answer is to sell drugs. This is the first time that they've had their government recognized in over twenty years - hopefully this puts them in the right direction.

yeah, sadly that's pretty common amongst many Muslims. You go by what your religion tells you. Those who think for themselves either seek to change it or leave it behind.

the most disturbing part for me was the beginning, right when she explained what had happened to her. I could see it in my head and it just sent a chill down my back. My mom used the same reasoning when she wanted to have it done to me and my sister a few years back - that it would keep us pure and make sure we would get married.

What a revolting concept. The most recent justification I heard before that documentary was that when a woman gives birth the clit will expand like a tentacled monster from a Japanese hentai, wrap around the newborn's neck and choke the life out of it.

How would you describe islam in Sweden? Is your salafi experience the norm or were you in a fringe group?

There are a lot of different groups and types of Muslims, I don't think one group is more representative of "Swedish Muslims" than any other. A lot of people with "Muslim heritage" are not very religious and practicing, but a lot of girls and women live under honor culture and norms. But if we look at the "practicing Muslims", they are divided into two main groups (if you look at it very dogmatically and generalize). You have the Ikhwani type who are often recognized in Sweden to represent all Swedish "mainstream" Muslims (actually, the Ikhwani mosque in Stockholm has been chosen as "representatives" by a lot of politicians when facing "Islamic" or "Muslim" problems). They do have strong ties to the Ikhwan movement, but very few of them see themselves as Ikhwan. It's just that the organizations they engage in and events they attend are organized by Ikhwani-tied Muslims. Then we have the Salafis. Even though they would all be classed as Salafis by "outsiders", a lot of them hate each other or condemn each other. Salafis are a very divided group. I realized, after reading a lot from happymurtad and his old posts, that he was most probably part of a Salafi group that I, during my more radical years, would derogatory refer to as "madhakhali" and actually really dislike him.  Roll Eyes Cheesy And then we have the more Sufi-inspired Muslims, but most are a more of a soft-core version of Sufi sunni Islam. We really don't have the more extreme sufi sects.

Both yes and no, there's no norm. In my neighborhood where I lived, most Muslims were just like me. Some wore the niqab, some didn't, but it was extremely popular the last couple of years. The difference is that really extreme extremism (like Anjem Choudhary) and hizb al tahrir are not very common, or at least they are quiet about it. But ideas that cliterecdomy is Islamic and we shouldn't protest against it, or that jihad is romanticized and supported in for example Syria, are not uncommon. If you don't agree, you are the one in the minority. But I would say I was the minority when I was a radical jihadi salafist. Most are soft-core salafists.

Edit: Everytime I vented my "feminist" and somewhat "liberal" ideas, I quickly realized I was not the norm... most Muslims are a lot more conservative =)

How is Swedish society in general viewed? All evil/whores/unclean/damned or just people who aren't muslims?

From my own experience, most Muslims just see them as poor non-Muslims who must be saved by dawah, but then you have those who also see Swedish society as evil and unclean and they never ever interact with non-Muslims and shun society and isolate themselves in Muslim neighborhoods and only send their kids to Muslim schools. Most people I knew were like that. The word "kafir" and "kuffar" was commonly used Smiley

Anyone heard of Afusat Saliu? Apparently she lives in Leeds with her two daughters, the government wants to deport them to Nigeria, which will possibly result in her two daughters being subjected to FGM.
