What happened when anti-FGM campaigner asked people in the street to sign a petition in favour of mutilating girls

A Londoner who suffered female genital mutilation has warned that political correctness is hampering the fight to stamp it out after asking people to sign a fake petition in its favour.

Leyla Hussein, 32, said many were scared to speak out against FGM because they were worried about criticising another culture.

She decided to conduct an experiment to see “how crazy political correctness has become” but was left in tears by the end.

Approaching shoppers with the petition supporting FGM, she told them she wanted to protect her  “culture, traditions and rights”.

In only 30 minutes 19 people signed it with some saying they believed FGM was wrong but because it was part of Ms Hussein’s culture they would add their names. Only one person refused to sign.

Her campaign against FGM is the subject of a Channel 4 documentary, The Cruel Cut, which features the shocking scenes where she asks people to sign the petition.

Speaking after the experiment in Northampton, Ms Hussein broke down and said she was scared by people’s reactions.

“I kept using the word ‘it’s just mutilation’. They were like ‘yes, you are right’. How can anyone think that’s okay?”

She added: “FGM is not culture, it is violence. Stop using the culture word. This is happening to children. We are human beings, we can’t watch children being cut, I don’t care what culture you belong to.”

Ms Hussein, who is co-founder of the anti-FGM charity Daughters of Eve, is calling on the Home Office to take responsibility for drawing up an action plan to eliminate FGM in this country.

No single government department has responsibility for ending FGM. Instead, work is shared between the Home Office, departments of Health and Education, the Ministry of Justice and Crown Prosecution Service. The documentary follows Ms Hussein as she tries to secure an interview with Home Secretary Theresa May, and features the upsetting stories of a group of FGM survivors living in the UK, some of whom have been left wetting the bed or unable to have children.

It also highlights the impact that articles published in the Evening Standard have had on the fight against FGM. More than 66,000 women in the UK have already undergone FGM and about 24,000 girls are at risk.

Although the practice has been outlawed in Britain since 1985, it is still carried out. Victims are typically from families who moved to the UK from countries such as Somalia, Sudan, Senegal and Egypt, where it is widespread. Ms Hussein, who was cut when she was seven in Somalia, said: “Four women held me down and cut my clitoris. I felt every single cut. I was screaming so much I just blacked out.”

The documentary, to be broadcast next week, comes after public health minister Jane Ellison warned that vulnerable girls were being failed because people do not want to be seen as “culturally insensitive”.

In an interview with the Evening Standard she said: “Because of that caution, bizarrely we’ve ended up protecting these vulnerable girls the least.” Ms Ellison condemned FGM as child abuse and said she was determined to end decades of failure to protect women.

The Cruel Cut will be shown on Channel 4 on Wednesday,  November 6 at 10.45pm.

The fuck is wrong with people? Is it that taboo to say "I think this is wrong and I'm not going to support it"?

We're so on edge about criticising other cultures. You just know as soon as you do people will be pointing and accusing you of being intolerant, racist, bigoted, etc. Even when its something we SHOULD be criticising apparently. We need to fucking break out of this mentality.

I almost feel like it has more to do with our language than the actual criticizing. I think that when it comes to saying "Such and such practice is commonly being practiced in this area and this area," people will less likely take it as an insult rather than "This group of people practices this." i.e. a lot of people attribute the practice of fgm to Islam when it predates Islam. If someone were to say, "Muslims practice of FGM," then they've suddenly brought in the whole population of Muslims (however diverse that is) and insulted them. I guess it could be problematic if they say a certain country as well (unless they say it's Saudi Arabia, they're allowed to insult Saudi Arabia). Rather, unless a country actually supports such a practice, it's better to say this group or area is commonly know to practice certain practice (or whatever it is that they're talking about)

Also, I feel like people are sensitive because there are a lot of places in the world where we so rarely promote a nice(?) narrative. The only thing we ever hear from certain countries or religions is the negative stuff which is unfair as it promotes a single narrative that doesn't capture the whole picture. i.e. "Africa" is always shown as being one big mass of land with poor, starving, half clothed black people devoid of cultural, ethnic, or racial differences. Not to mention the fact that every time Africa is in the news, it's about malaria. Nothing about the economic growth. No mention of the different countries that make up Africa, just poor, backwards black people.

People, in my opinion, tend to be sensitive about criticizing cultures because no one knows much about them before they speak and so they're hesitant to form a public opinion. But rather than shying away from it, it's better to get an understanding of the problem they're talking about and admit the fact that the problem is not central to a certain area or not the only thing with knowing about the people who live there. (am I making sense?)

Or it could just be that everyone is afraid of being seen as racist and they just need to get over it.

In England it has nothing to do with language. It's simple moral cowardice.

Until I see the documentary, I've decided to chalk this down to 'rabbit in the headlights'. People ambushed on the street and overwhelmed by self-consciousness to the extent that they turn off their brain and will basically do whatever you want them to do just to make the situation stop. I've exploited that phenomenon on occasion.

Be prepared to get mightily depressed.

When I was in London I lived in an area with a large Somali population. It was hobblingly, limpingly obvious that FGM was being performed on young girls during the summer holidays. No-one did a shit of course.

I volunteered to help an FGM charity about eight years ago, but never heard back. I think it was a scam charity.

Could be true to some extent, but from what I know, this kind of cultural relativism is most rampant amongst the academics and the media savvy. That is, it is often the more educated people who are more apt to try to make excuses for cultural practices that are violent, abusive, or oppressive, in order to appear more 'tolerant' than the people they perceive to be uneducated and less cosmopolitan.

An educated lesbian feminist member of my family once had a go at me for criticising the burka.

I'm not surprised. I guess I'm "outing" myself here, but I'm Somali and I remember a few years back, my mom said she wanted to do the procedure to me, but wanted to have it done at a more respectable place, like Saudi Arabia.

I thank my lucky stars every day for her laziness.

Mind you, *she* didn't get the procedure done, but thought it was better to have it done on me.

Yeah, I hate when people make excuses for it like "It's their culture", but I don't mind if they bring it into perspective. A few years ago a lot of news stories were painting Somali pirates as an extension of Al-Shabaab iirc or at least similar to them. I don't think it was brought up that Somali fisherman only became pirates because that was the only way they thought they could protect themselves against the bigger, more powerful countries that were fishing in their waters and dumping toxic wastes. Were they correct in their actions? Of course not. Is it excusable? Nope. But it isn't as if they did it because one day they thought to themselves, "to hell with it! I want to kill some white people."

Personally speaking (and I guess this might just be the liberal in me), I wish when it came to discussing other (often less privileged) cultures, countries, and people, we were more fair in how we discussed the problems. Don't tip toe around it, but also don't make it out to be like this certain culture, country, people are the worst because of this problem. I'm bad at articulating my thoughts  Tongue

Just a quick question for clarification. My understanding of FGM is that there are two types. Although maybe the second type doesn't fall under the category of FGM.

There is a different surgery that takes some of the skin off of the clitoris in the way that there is skin cut from the penis. Is that included in the category of FGM (because the other surgery is much, much worse and actually, if I remember correctly, makes it harder for the woman to use the bathroom)? If it is included under the category of FGM (the procedure similar to the circumcision), then how come there isn't nearly as much outcry about male circumcision?

    Just curious.  thnkyu

The extent of damage tends to be limited in "normal" cases however, when compared to rape in child marriages.
