  • Wanted to share this gem.

Something I found on tumblr, and wanted to share.
    -------

“In every Middle East or African country I have visited, I noticed the country is as ‘“advanced” as its women are, or as backward as its women. By this I mean, in areas where the women have been pushed into the background and kept without education, the whole area or country is just as backward, uneducated, and “underdeveloped.”
Where the women are encouraged to get education and play a more active role in the allaround affairs of the community and the country, the entire people are more active, more enlightened, and more progressive. Thus, in my opinion, the Muslim religious leaders of today must re-evaluate and spell out with clarity the Muslim position on education in general and education for women in particular. And then a vast program must be launched to elevate the standard of education in the Muslim world.

An old African proverb states: “Educate a man and you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate an entire family.””

Bullshit because look at Iraq, and Iraqi women go to uni and work.
But I see how people could think that, considering the popular view that the mid east is all poverty stricken camel jockeys who don't know what 1+1 is.

Malcolm X died in 1965. Iraqi women didn't even have the right to vote until 1980.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

Education is not just about getting up from bed and going to school.

How is that related to the substance of the quote?
(not that it makes sense why women's voting matters in a dictatorship?)

Saddam's "feminism" (eg . his legacy of Iraqi women who are literate and work represent a large percentage especially compared to neighbouring countries) stems from his vision of building a nationalist war machine country.

So then what good is education if the leaders barre any opposing views from disseminating (through executions and whatnot).

That was then^. And currently, Iraqi women have cars and houses and salaries, and no proper roads to drive on, open sewers, no garbage disposal, etc because of sheer government corruption, and no taxes or anything that pays for these things.

Because the quote was written in 1965. And you appeared to be pointing to modern Iraq as evidence that the sentiment expressed in the quote was bullshit.

Either way, the sentiment is still generally true today. Trivially obviously true. I'm not entirely sure why you're writing it off as bullshit.

    Trivially obviously true.

Trivial obvious truths are often the most telling. And the ones people resist most fiercely.

The two do not correlate, it is not simple like that.

If the date was the issue, I would have to look at some historical sources (one you mentioned was that Iraqi women voted in the 80's, even though Iraq was very "advanced" until about the time of the sanctions).

What can happen censorship and corruption?
