or which of us ties fishnets (can you?)

No, but I can take the roof off a termite-addled old Japanese house.

    And so to work...

    Bet they are expensive too.

I think pretty near everything is expensive. But they could be worse. It depends where you live. Most are imported.

I know you mean well. But telling me what to do is not a good idea. I left obedience inside my 40 Hadith and walked away. Not even DA gets away with it.

You go. Take that roof off! Stomp a termite for me!

I don't have to read the whole trail. My English is good enough to understand what "living as muslims" means. It means living as something you are not. If it is a mistake on your part, due to your phone, or your classism, then we can let it go. I just hope you realize that the uneducated masses of any religion are your equal, and mine. Because we are all equal. All of us. And each of us determines who we are, and who we are not. It does not matter what school we go to, or which of us ties fishnets (can you?), makes nappies from discarded shirts (I can), or programs in archaic C++. We are the same, all our masses.

you know, forcefully mischaracterising my post (or even a religion) doesn't make it true.

I'm sure your english is fine but that's not the problem.

Okay. So did you say "living as muslims", or not? I already gave you an out.

I didn't do anything to any religion.

Which experience is more valid? My bitter awakening to my own marginalization under Islamic thought and the Shariah- and subsequent freedom, or my blissful ignorance- when I was drowning in apologist literature and ripping my back to shreds in Taraweeh? Is there a conflict? I don't know... maybe self-deceit, denial, to self-awareness?  Cognitive dissonance. I will lean back and let you tell me where the conflict is. Where is the conflict?

Out of the two of us, who sounds more conflicted? I'm sorry but I don't share your bitterness. Does that aggravate you?

when at least one other person understood my post, why do you persist with this? here it is out of context (since you seem to prefer that):

I disagree, it's just a case of putting things in context... even so, plenty uneducated people live as muslims without worrying about intellectual honesty phantoms

so like some crazed literalists, you want to assign meaning to "live as muslims" with your own preconceived notions? even when the author tells you that you're wrong?

    no wonder you left islam.

Unless you share my shoes, how can you share my bitterness? I am only aggravated by racism and classism, in that order.

I note you still don't answer the question.

Oh, crazed literalists. Hmmm. So, it is wrong? It does not mean what it says? I can disregard it? There is no meaning, no implication? No sexism, no racism, no elitism? No disregard of humanity, of human rights?

Man, I wish I could have done that with Hadith and Quran. I would have just plucked out a few useful things and disregarded the rest. Maybe I will re-enter the faith. I am Muslim. I am an ala carte Muslim. I am keeping Ghusl and Sadaqa, only.

there will always be people who have a malicious reading, some might even fabricate the whole narrative - it's not an unfamiliar concept.

I'd recommend giving the pick n mix method a try but you're carrying too much baggage.

Pick and mix Islam is called apologist dawah. It's a method. I left my baggage with my 40 Hadith. I kept my dhikr beads. I do what I want, without fear. Islam has more baggage than LAX.

    Isn't that being dishonest?

`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'

I'm not knowledgeable enough to be an apologist  who gives sneaky dawah.

We both don't live in fear - is it because one of us is ignorant and the other is enlightened?

You know, despite some really nice quotes coming out of all of this, I really don't like how it derailed this far from Cornflower's intent with making this topic.  She wanted to connect with people that have had similar journeys, not have to debate whether her purpose for leaving is justified or not.

I am guilty in this too, so yeah. Sorry, Cornflower.

I used to be one of those sneaky apologists. But I meant well. I just took whatever I liked out of context, helped right along by my translated apologist literature. I cherry picked my Islam to suit whoever I was helping into/remain in the faith. Blissfully, happily, knowing I was helping create and keep slaves to Allah. Sorry to my victims.

Who is ignorant? Who is enlightened? According to most, enlightened has to do with waking up the parts of your mind that are not normally used. I don't do drugs, man.

Nice to know you believe in Islam but not in hell. Good for you. Throw out the parts you don't want! Change the faith! Defend the Bid'aah! You could be the next Baha Ullah.

You know, I am sorry, Cornflower is sweet and deserved a clean thread. But also I am known for this. I spew everything all over the place. I am so sloppy about it. I have the biggest mouth, you should hear me yelling in foreign tongues at the children. It is like staccato rap. I cannot control myself anymore. It's a huge improvement over mousy, obedient, me.

See, Quod, this is how you create a religion. You find some things you like and you keep them, and tell others about them, and then you throw away the rest.

I wonder what this one will be called. I am all ears, here.

Nah, I do it too, but I think I like Cornflower so that's why I am curbing myself.  That and the exact same debate is going on in his intro thead.  I think Quod just hit on Ex-hijabi in the most profoundly Islamic fashion in it too. I was impressed.

Islam reinvents the wheel, declares all previous wheels to be mere mock-ups. The perfect Islamic wheel-for-all-time has cast iron spokes and a non-pneumatic rubber tyre (a true scientific miracle in 700 AD).

Fast forward to 2013. Islam reinvents the smartphone (lets call it the Peace Mobile). It is the perfect phone for all time. Other phones may be faster, lighter, sleeker, but you love your Peace Mobile.

True, it has an annoying habit of crashing, especially when processing large amounts of new information. But you love the information already stored within.

True, it only works only on one network and its roaming capabilities are severely limited. But why roam when all earthly and celestial perfection is already within your grasp?

Who could ever tire of a Peace Mobile? Its best bits are the best.
