Sir Charles Witmore reviews: ‘The Life of the Prophet Muhammad’ (PG).Disclaimer: The review contains spoilers.
The veteran Indian film director Stevinder Spielbergen returns with a spectacular Bollywood epic based on the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Boasting an all-star cast including Amitabh Bachan who plays the principal character, The Life of Muhammad is an amalgamation of film genres, which is a staple of all much loved Bollywood movies.
Adapted from the memories of people who knew someone who knew someone else who may have once spoken to Muhammad, the movie centres on the typical tale of a young orphan boys uplifting journey through social isolation, heartache and physical abuse only to be transformed into a warrior-cum-statesman that leads raids, has sex with lots of captured women and claims to be the Final Messenger of the One True God. Muhammad is a character that everyone can identify with.
Following in the footsteps of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, The Life of Muhammad boasts a recording breaking 37 musical numbers. Muhammad sings songs of friendship, women and war with Abu Bakr, played by Shakti Kapoor and Uthman, played by legendary T.V. actor Om Puri. The combination of such raw talent set against stunning visual locations of the Hijazi Mountains is enough to evoke the passions of the more docile modern film audience whilst maintaining the authenticity of its subject matter. This film really is a cinematic masterpiece underpinned by a musical score produced and arranged by none other than the legendary R.B. Rahman. The Quranic recitation never sounded so majestic when fused with banghra drums, sitar strums and the occasional tastefully executed rap outro.
