What about their relationship interests you?

I don't know exactly. I guess it's because in my ignorance I assumed marriages like theirs (from what little I know of it based on your writing) just don't take place that often here. Especially considering that she's American. There are so many values from Western culture that I've grown up with and live by now, but I still struggle with the regressive values of Islam and Somali culture, I just never thought that an American born woman would, too, and find herself in a marriage with a man like your father and stay as long as she did? Maybe I'm not explaining myself well. I hope I made sense. cool2 I guess when you hear a lot about abusive Muslim men in the media they begin to feel more and more like a stereotype and not real. That's why their relationship interests me. You're charting all of the changes and how they went from the couple in love who got married to where they are now. They feel real. Which is terrifying.

I understand. It's kind of like how people don't think that the stuff you went through in Islamic school goes on in the US, but it does every day. I think that's why it's important for us to tell our stories.

Oh, definitely! I've been reading so many blogs ever since I've left Islam and the whole thing has left me feeling sad. Just a year ago I was thinking anyone who said "Muslim women are oppressed/forced to wear hijab" were Islamophobic/making a big deal out of a few occurrences. But what it really was was that I didn't want to think that people were capable of this. I didn't want to make a big deal out of the things that happened to me. I assumed that by being Western, I (or anyone else growing up here) couldn't be oppressed. I'm learning everyday how wrong I was.

Thank you for writing your blog. Smiley

Oppression when it's common place is so hard to pick up on because you don't think anything is wrong. I went through the same thing until I broke the silence imposed on me by family. Went talking to other people about the home situation and they told me how bad it was just by their reactions.

Thank you for sharing yours too.

That was a great read.  Afro Your school sounds gigantic. 1000 kids? In the freshman class alone? I think when I graduated, there were only seven kids in my class. Can't wait for more.

It was so huge that you could go through all of high school without ever being noticed once. I think you'll find Gloria to be interesting!

Witches! I despair! I am hanging!
My school was 1500 students. Clean bathrooms, and a close personal relationship with the dean, principal, hall monitors, and school board got me though.
I was nominated for early university, too.
But was not approved. No early university, no scholarship. No scholarship, no university. Hello, life.

It always amazes me when people talk about how small numbers they had in school. I guess I am just used to the inner city schools with tons of kids in them. You only stood out if you were the worst of the bunch or the best of the bunch.

I love how that's the first thing people assume Ex Muslim women will do - go naked and sleep with everyone!  Cheesy

Not really, pretty small by college standards but huuuuge compared to my old school. Only bad thing is that I go to school with a lot of people I knew from high school. I still have to pretend to pray and all that. No fun.  Tongue

lol well I did go naked. Eventually. I think the taboo on nakedness is stupid.

Anyway. That sucks. Maybe when you're more confident you can apply to a university far away and dorm.

It really is. I have yet to understand what the obsession is with female sexuality.  Roll Eyes

When I was first applying for school, I was intending to go out-of-state, but my parents pretty much banned for doing so. The cost would have been too much. I'm alright where I am right now. My friends are great people. I just can't wait to leave and take my hijab off for good. I can't remember the last time I did and I can't imagine how wonderful that'll feel. Lately I've been thinking about what I'll do with my hair once I've de-jabbed. Even thinking about it gets me excited.

My father had taught me that whatever goes on at home, we keep in the family. You don’t depend on anyone or trust anyone other than family.  It was a vow of silence that I took seriously for a long time.

Anyway, you were right! I really like Gloria. She is the type of friend you need in high school, I think. One that widens your horizons rather than cosigning on all of your life stories. Anyway, she's the type of person I've always wanted to know. Can't wait for more.  dance
