    I don't even know how the position of atheism could be based on faith, since it's simply denying what isn't at all evident.  But I hear people say this to this very day.  It's kind of irritating.

    Well, a lot of atheists have faith and seem to have traded the religion kool-aid for the science kool-aid, but :atheism" itself can't be based on faith., since it's just a rejection of something that has no evidence to back it up.

    The scientific method is the exact opposite of 'kool-aid'. Science is built on reproducible and verifiable evidence and falsifiable theories. It is progressive by its very nature improving from the past. For example, general relativity is a better theory to explain gravitation than Newton's theory was and accounted for the flaws found in Newton's ideas.

    You misunderstand me.  "Science kool aid" means accepting science without actually understanding it, which in my experience, most atheists, or at least "new atheists" do.  And hell, they don't understand religion either.  To them science is just Richard Dawkins and Neil Degrass Tyson quotes.  To them it's just their religion.  Everyone with a background in science I know hates militant atheists, and for good reason.

    Well yes and no.  "Atheism" is simply a stance, nothing more, nothing less, but a lot of atheists try to fill the void with religion, and not just traditional.   "New Atheists" try to make it into a religion, they're even making atheist mega churches (lol), and of course there's Transhumanism, and a lot of different examples.  As an atheist, I'm typically embarrassed by other atheists.

    Who are these 'New Atheists'? Isn't that a moniker provided by the apologists and the media?

    Holding a conference does not constitute a religion.

    There's a difference between a 'religion' in the traditional sense and 'civil religion' which the sociologist Steve Bruce would happily explain to you.

    This is an old idea going back to the French Revolution and it's a false dichotomy if you ask me.
