Impossible to say who was historically the first "Prophet". One of the earlier ones who fitted definition of prophet instead of just guru or wizard was Zarathustra, Persian who reformed polytheistic tradition and worshipped only one God. Nowadays some scholars claim he didn't exist but he was at least pseudo-historical person. Probably not the first ever but probably first that we know of today.

    I don't know about Adam.

I ask many stupid questions frequently.
I am curious, that's why I ask many questions.
I am overly curious, that's why I ask stupid questions.

Huh!  there was no sex before Adam?  sure there were animals who knew about sex., Adam must have seen animals having sex...

O.K I give to these religious bums that Adam & Eve and their yadi...yadi story.,   which makes them father & mother of ALL of mankind.

So call them dad & Mom...,  why call that guy as Prophet? then Eve should be also called as Prophet.    These religious guys who wrote those scripture are brainless bums.. They don't know the difference between their daddy and  their prophet..

They were once called Oracles, Shaaman etc...

It would have simply been the clever (or literate person) who learned to predict a certain seasonal occurance (the dropping of the leaves, an eclipse, the coming of the rains) or read from the texts of ancient(er) peoples in an age where nobody else could, and shaped the texts to mean what he wanted them too for his people

Religions have existed as far back as human beings have tried to organize and control each other. And of course there have to be priests, prophets, and soothsayers that can “communicate” with the Gods. What good would a religion be if you could not tell people what God wants them to do.

Adam, the word, means Man or Mankind. The character Adam is just the embodiment of the creation of man via a figure one can relate to. Adam, as a person, provides a source of authority in one can call upon similar to a hereditary king or family. If you read through the Bible all major prophets and "true" Kings have been of the "pure" line of Adam. All "impure" lines have been corrupted by devils, Satan, Cain, etc. People have used various claims of family lines to reinforce their own claims to property, kingship, etc. Sumerian government was based on Priest-Kings so this is similar to the claims of Divine guidance of the Israelite prophets. Beside what better way is there to reinforce one's authority by invoking the authority of the God(s) people already worship. It is one of the best arguments from authority, one which most people can not refuted unless rivaled in material resources; military, economic, etc. Reference Saul and David for an idea of how one can be the chosen for God yet fall from "grace" due to material world based consequences.

Change the details a bit and you will see how many religious figures have used God(s) as a source of authority an average person can not challenge. All their failures are based on the material world and thir actions within it. As soon as one fails there is blood in the water and the sharks are out in force. The successor, or usurper, is always the one the God(s) suddenly favor next until the next failure along with the next person "favored" by the Gods.

bogart, you ever consider writing a book? Your posts are highly enjoyable and informative.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

There is a possibility of authoring a book which would be related to my choice of study and career path. Although this would be restricted to archaeology and future opportunities with the field. Outside of archaeology I am erratic jumping from topic to topic with the only unifying factor being history. Besides at this time a book outside of my current goals would be a distraction. A few ramblings here and there are my way of brain-draining and avoiding writer's block.

    Back to my previous comment.

Also take note of successful religious figures. The same favour of the God(s) can be applied. Islam was successful in it's early years by the will of God. The failures of Muslim nations in the present is punishment. The same can be applied by another religion which is present in the rhetoric of ultra right wing Christians in America. Heck the rise of secularism and atheism is seen punishment from God by many within both religions. A lot of people seem to reject the idea that their own limitations are not their fault instead it's God's will. Rather than sparing a moment for self-reflection or to analysis what resulted in the failures within their society, government, religion, etc. It is easier to pass the buck on to God.

How can the perfect system fail or be conquered by human created systems? If a system fails it is not perfect either on paper or practice.
