    I found this from an old post about Ramadan

      Where were we? Ahh ramandan. Excuses to get out of the house:
    - go to the nearest library to study
    - go to the local gym/swimming pool, there is usually a cafeteria
    - go to the nearest supermarket to get something (and eat on the way)
    - plan to meet up with a friend to do homework
    - plan to read a book in the park

    To freshen breath:
    - eat something coarse like flapjacks
    - chew a gum
    - brush your teeth as soon as you get home
    - use a light mouthwash
    - if desperate: breath in while talking

    Food to eat undercover (easy to eat, silent to eat, high carbohydrates):
    - bananas
    - cereal bars (choose wisely)
    - dates
    - BREAD!
    - biscuits (eat with water to soften them)

    So far I've got some belvita breakfast biscuits, crackers, a few crisp packets, haribos and a chocolate bar, all conveniently hidden in a shoebox in my closet,

    I didn't get a chance to read all of these posts, but I've been needing a place to vent about Ramadan....I've been dreading it the whole year! It will be my 4th year not fasting...but pretending to fast and it sucks! Although I'm 30 I still live with my family because I'm not married yet (still haven't gotten the courage to tell them I want to marry my Jewish BF that I've been hiding the past 2 years from them) and they won't let me leave.  Before that I've fasted every year since I was eight years old.

    I usually hide things in my room but last year I was hungry and think I got caught by my mom...she saw me chewing...you should have seen her face! But of course...she acted like nothing happened. I'm not gonna chance it this year and will try not to spend a lot of time at home....which will be another difficult task because last year I did that and my dad had a shit fit because I would come home an hour before Iftar....yesterday for the first day of Ramadan I went over to my BFs house and ate...then went back home a few hours before Iftar so my dad wouldn't be on my case.  It's so frustrating....I'm so sick of not living my life how I truly want just to shut my parents up. Sometimes I feel like the only way out is just to wait until they both die or I die...as horrible as that sounds.

    It's irritating cause I have to just smile and nod when they go on preaching about how Islam is the right path, and the purpose of life is a test...and last night the first night of Ramadan had to bite my tongue when my mom brought up an article about non Muslim people that talked about the health benefits of fasting to further justify this crap in her mind. I went to medical school...and before that majored in nutrition....I learned about what happens to the body during fasting for a certain length of time, and I absolutely know for the most part it is NOT healthy. But of course, tell that to my mom or something against Islam at all and she'll throw back in my face that there are so many well educated people that believe in Islam, etc etc....

    My mom is only half Lebanese and her Lebanese side has been in America for over a hundred years so they are pretty much Americanized (she doesn't acknowledge her "white side"). None of her family members fast except her of course...she also went as far as to wear the scarf...and again she is the only one in her immediate family that does. My dad is from Lebanon and is a Khoumeni loving Shia one....just the way my mom likes it....so the family member he brought over to America do fast and we have to go over there to eat delicacies like stomach during the month.

    I just want to be able to live my own life without having to do things like pretending to fast and pretending to believe in Islam...I don't know how much longer I can take...I feel like I'm going to explode. Sorry for the rant, I had to write this somewhere even if no one reads it. I think the only people that can understand are ones that grew up in a religious Islamic household that is strict about fasting. I just really don't know if I can handle it this time around....I feel like I'd on m at my breaking point with everything and if there wasn't Islam my life would be so much easier and my parents couldn't justify everything on what is written in the Quran. It's impossible to have an educated conversation with someone that's end argument is it's the word of God. They're always right in their mind. I feel like breaking something write now.

    You're 30 and you live in America. You have every right to live your own life. If it's that bad, look for your own place or move in with your boyfriend's family, I know last time you said they offered.

    Can you not just move out, get your own place, i moved out at 17 couldnt bear my mums partner..   fasting.. I dont think i ever did one successfully..

    I've talked about moving out to my mom again recently and it ended up in a huge argument and guilt trip...things were said like "I don't care about the family", etc. I've been feeling the situation with my parents a lot more closely the past few months and I really just cannot see a way out. I feel very trapped and I'm almost certain that if I moved out without their consent they would find me and bring me back...and if I move in with my BF they will find out where he lives (my brother goes to the same medical school as my BF and the students information is listed for them to see including where they live). I'm just really afraid of my father and after almost a year of therapy to get the courage to tell my parents about my BF I haven't progressed at all.

    So I suppose pretending to fast is the least of my worries.

    I was on my period last week so I just prolonged that for a day. Grin Now I'm enjoying my coffee and a chicken sandwich in my room.

    I was in doubt on whether I should fast or not. I'm too scared my parents will find out so I'm just going to fast along and drink water whenever I can.

    I can handle 19 hours of fasting better than I can handle the sudden piety of people. -.-"

    LOl I didnt even bother fasting, I am pretending tho. I drank water straight after sehri and took some medz. Now my mum is gone out I had a glass of drinking yogurt and got a banana stashed in my room.

    Have you tried getting support from your mothers side of the family? Team up with her sisters, maybe you can live with them for a while. That could be an intermediate between moving out and living with your parents.

    You need to risk it though if it is causing you so much mental distress. Could you speak to the medical school to take down your boyfriend's details explaining your situation? Is part of the reason of staying due to need for funding?

    Have you tried getting support from your mothers side of the family? Team up with her sisters, maybe you can live with them for a while. That could be an intermediate between moving out and living with your parents.


    This seems like a good option too.

    Also, Brazil is a shithole, it's not like 'Straya or Canada, things here are terrible, but "good" enough to live a descent life.
