  • Short Introduction & Blowing off some steam
     OP - June 02, 2014, 06:57 PM

Hello everyone, I've been an on and off lurker at this place since last October or November and I think it's about time I introduce myself (a little). I'm a closet atheist waiting for the day where I can finally rip off the Muslim label attached to me. Eight months have passed since I chose to become an atheist and a vegan. I feel so liberated and healthy. It took 19 years but better late than never.

As a child (20 years old now), like many others, I had so many aspirations and dreams but Islam said they were sinful lifestyles. Everyone told me  I was a talented footballer, and that I should pursue a professional football career. And I did, but during my teenage years I couldn't do it alone and didn't get any support from my parents. They insisted that I should go to madrasa (Quran & Hadith school for children) on the weekends rather than pursue my dreams. Every Friday I couldn't help but feel sad, because I knew where I had to be the next morning. I was envious of all my high school friends. They would plan something fun, and upon invitation I'd always decline with some lame excuse. In fact, I barely went out with my friends at all, my mother said that I shouldn't be wasting my time with such worldly pleasures and the hereafter is all that matters. I've always been a shy character, and the lack of social activities meant I stayed that way. I'm an introvert.

I'm extremely distant from my family, especially my mother, every conversation just turns into "Are you reading Quran?, Have you prayed?, Where are you going?". Ofcourse, i don't do those things and I don't like lieing so the only solution is for me to avoid her which means me being out the house as much as I can. When it comes to my brother and sister, I can bare having a conversation but I still avoid it, we have opposing views on many things and besides, someday I'll be out of there lives for good and I don't want to create any bonds. At home, I like being by myself, I do anything to avoid contact with family members.

It's strange, both my siblings went through a phase during late teens/early twentys where they were extremely religious up to the point where our relatives were jealous of my mother in that their children weren't that way. I, however , did not got through such a phase. My doubts for the religion just kept growing, why is it that I can't do this or that or chase this dream or that dream. So many rules!!!. This may have nothing related to it but I'm the youngest, got the best grades and went to the best uni (Top 5) compare to my brother and sister.

Anyways I think this is getting too long, I can continue my story in some other thread.

Today, I had a conversation about my veganism with my brother. My entire family thinks I'm crazy for not eating meat and so my brother tried to ask me why I would even consider such a lifestyle. So we got to talking and I told him about animal cruelty, increased risk of diseases, colon and prostate cancers and so on. For any of you vegans on this forum, you'll know what I'm talking about. And inevitably religion came into the mix, he stated that god gave us meat to eat so we should eat it. 24 million chickens are killed every day for food in the US alone. I said that this is clearly unethical but he kept justifying it with his mighty islam. I was so furious and he kept saying that the prophet ate meat and so I'm going against Islam and at that point I was about to reveal my apostasy to take the debate further but I kept my cool.

What annoys me the most though is when he asks for evidence and I give it to him but then goes on to say that he can't be bothered to read it. He's such a close minded person.

That's it. I just needed to vent a little after that argument with my brother.

One more thing though. I know everyone here is open minded and so I encourage everyone to read about veganism, and how meat-eating can impact your health and the environment. I'm going to attach a youtube video which got me to consider veganism.

It's just 18 mins of your precious time, video is by Tim Shieff who does Parkour for a living. I was shocked that he could do all those crazy moves without having meat in his diet.

Welcome to the forum CantStopNow. I can definitely relate to feeling restricted from realizing my aspirations due to an Islamic background. Anyway, I hope you feel free to express yourself and enjoy over here.  bunny

Also, it doesn't surprise me that someone can do sick Parkour moves while being a vegan.  Tongue Its a legitimate diet choice for athletes if they make the right decisions.

    Welcome CSN,
parrot Always good to read a new ex mussie introduction and I'm looking forward, hopefully, to reading intros from some 'Ramadanian' ex muslims, this what I like to refer to as ex muslim members who join during Ramadan. We had a brief influx of them last year so please no different this one.

Btw am planning to go more veggie myself, don't think I could ever go full vegan but definitely cut out more meat. My starting point will be to give up those awful processed halal frankfurters (that muslims just because they're halal go so barmey about). My plan is to replace them with Korn style veggie sausages. I reckon with the right amount of relish, cheese and onions it might just work.
Hope you like it here. Smiley

    Welcome parrot.
I haven't eaten mammal nor fowl for twenty five years. I eat fish, though. I think most people probably eat too much meat, but I am learning how to cook it for my children, because it is helping them grow without malnutrition. Balancing the diet in the West without meat is difficult, in my opinion, and I don't want my kids to grow up vomiting every time they eat at a friend's house or at school. We live in farm country, where meat is in every meal.
If you slip a little chicken broth into my food, I cannot keep any of it down. I don't want to do that (make the common culture diet intolerable) to my kids without their informed consent, at a certain age.

Yes. Yes it is. He ate and slept on the floor, thetefore the special kind of salafis will adopt this lifestyle. They also eat with their hands, sometimes from the same plate. I know these people. They don't think you HAVE to do it, since it was only his customs, but with the right intention allah will award you.

I know a guy who gave me some scientific crap on why it is right to eat on the floor. I don't know where do they come up with these ideas? To a not well-known person they seem pretty convincing. The most ridiculous of the 'scientific Islamic claims' is that during their periods women tend to err with their memories. www.answering-christianity.com even gave a link to an article in a renowned British newspaper that claims the same. When the West is doing this who can blame the Muslims?

People are idiots. They have biases, and when they find one research that confirms that bias, they are happy. They don't understand that just because you can read about something in a research, doesn't make it "truth". Research is more complex than that, that's why you have researches that come to very different conclusions based on methodology, sample etc etc etc.

Besides, even if that were true, it would only be for the duration of their periods. This does not justify considering women to be bad witnesses. In fact, I have read many studies that suggest that women tend to have stronger memories than men in general.

I wish Muslims had this kind of faith in science in matters where it really counted, like evolution and such. Instead they find one study saying women have problems with memory during their periods and they lose their fucking minds. "Omg... Islam is trueeee" (imagine Kevin Hart's voice when reading that last part).

The halal slaughter method is horrifying, surely if the animals were aware of Allah then they would sit there and take it rather than panic.

The best thing I could advise is to not tell yourself that you will never eat meat or cheese, milk etc. again but instead make a goal to bring in more fresh fruits and veggies into your diet. The transition should be as comfortable as possible.

This is the kind of logic that exists inside the mind of a religious person. 60 billion land animals and 90 billion marine animals are slaughtered every year. How can anyone justify this kind of mass murder with a god who's supposed to be all loving?

     parrot Welcome!

On going raw, there is loads of misinformation about that!  The problem is we have been roasting grilling and boiling stuff for two million years, and a large proportion of our digestive system is now actually outside us, in cooking, knives and forks, and breeding food.

The studies of people going raw ignore the processing of olive oil, that bananas have been bred for so long it is silly and many other examples of ignored processing.
