Why not promote Fake islam then? I mean I'd rather Muslims be atheist but Fake Islam Muslims is a better alternative to Real Islam.

The problem is that as long as Islam is around, somebody might actually read the texts and start taking them seriously. Then you have another ISIS.

ISIS have released a video of them beheading an American journalist called James Foley. The man who carries out the beheading has an English accent.

    Quote
James Wright Foley, an American journalist kidnapped in 2012, was beheaded in an ISIS video released on Tuesday, August 19.  The video is titled “A Message to America.”

A figure in a black robe with a gun strapped on his person and a masked hat covering his face, apart from his eyes, appears in the video next to Foley. In the video, the Islamic State says that Obama’s authorization of strikes against IS places United States “upon a slippery slope towards a new war front against Muslims,” accordin to BNO.

“Any attempt by you, Obama, to deny Muslims liberty & safety under the Islamic caliphate, will result in the bloodshed of your people,” the ISIS person added.

Foley also speaks in the video, saying: “call on my friends, family members and loved ones to rise up against my real killers, the U.S. government.

THIS is the inevitable consequence of promoting faith, the belief in something with no evidence. Especially in gods of ancient barbaric times.

The insistence and demand among society in general that religious belief and ideas, however absurd, should be automatically especially respected and protected from criticism, scrutiny, questioning, mockery, ridicule and insult if need be, is a comfortable environment for extreme beliefs to take root.

While I am in no way claiming that religious people are directly responsible for what is happening in Iraq, and in other issues where religion plays a detrimental part, but I think religious people and those who promote faith as a virtue, and something to be encouraged, often with government and societal support,  need to take a long hard look at their religions.

Moderate and benign religious people in our comfortable democratic liberal societies, who are free to pick and chose what part of religion they want to follow, who I am sure are as horrified and appalled by what is happening in Iraq, Syria etc, as we are, must now begin to accept that by promoting faith they are unwittingly and unintentionally setting the scene for such extreme groups, to blossom.

The average religious person who claims to gain comfort from their religion as they think they will go to heaven and enjoy eternal youth with all their loved ones, MUST now realise that this same religion that they insist must be respected, is also simultaneously getting people beheaded, medical assistance refused, children killed for witchcraft, mass kidnappings, terrorism, other atrocities and injustices, and all sorts of messed up dangerous thinking, in other poorer, less educated, and unstable parts of the world.

So as the lucky religious people who live in 'the west' get to enjoy meeting grandma in the afterlife and lovely fables about nativities and magic angels to make us feel all soft and fluffy, many poor sods elsewhere are getting their heads detached, genetically mutilated, denied medical treatment, beaten and ostracised, lack education, and are psychologically traumatised.

The 'benefits' of religious faith (believing things without evidence) are  unproven and minimal AT BEST, whereas the disadvantages, are tragic, real and all too measurable.

Religious people and accomodationalists need to get out of the idea as a society that faith is something to be encouraged.

    Rant over.

This is worth a read too.

Expert urges two pronged approach to home grown terrorism

    Quote
The threat of home grown terrorism has been widely debated during the past few weeks. The federal government has proposed a variety of measures in response, including increasing intelligence agencies’ access to metadata and changing criminal laws dealing with travel to conflict zones in the Middle East. These measures would expand pre-existing policing and surveillance powers.

However, one counter-terrorism expert says that these ‘hard’ tactics need to be complemented by other ‘soft’ strategies if they are to succeed. Dr Anne Aly, a research fellow in counter-terrorism at Curtin University, recognises that police will always play a role in stopping western-born Muslims turning to terrorism.

In an interview with RN Breakfast, however, she said that police will be ineffective unless society engages with young men who are at risk of falling into extremism in the first place.

    <snip>

How can we address the ‘anger’ that lies at the heart of the issue? Dr Aly pointed to the European response, which she believes is instructive. Germany, in particular, has for a long time been confronted with extremism in the form of neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups.

The lessons learned in that context can be used to curb radicalisation within Islamic communities. Anti-extremist organisation EXIT-Germany is a case in point, and was founded by a former detective and a former neo-Nazi leader.

‘They assist families of young men who are starting to buy into the propaganda, particularly online, but also in their personal offline lives,’ said Dr Aly. ‘They counsel [parents] on how to talk them away from radicalisation, how to get them out of it.’

‘There’s a very strong role for [parents] to play, particularly because in the Islamic tradition the family plays a very strong role in the socialisation of the individual. They need to be enabled in that role.’

The model has received a positive response, and is being trialled in the UK, the Netherlands and Canada. Dr Aly hopes to bring it to Australia. Last year, she launched a group that she describes as ‘Australia’s only non-government organisation that deals with countering violent extremism’.

People Against Violent Extremism (PAVE) is aimed at addressing the conditions that make young Australian Muslim men susceptible to hardline jihadist movements, and has been working closely with the German groups that pioneered these soft counter-terrorism strategies.

I call on my friends, family and loved ones to rise up against my real killers the US Gov. For what will happen to me is only a result of their complacency and criminality.

A message to my parents, save me some dignity and don’t accept some meager compensation for my death from the same people who effectively hit the last nail in my coffin with their recent aerial campaign in Iraq. I call on my brother John, who is a member of the US air force, think about what you are doing, think about the lives you destroy including those of your own family.

I call on you John, think about who made the decision to bomb Iraq recently and, to kill those people whomever they may have been, think john who did they really kill? And did they think about me or our family when they made that decision. I died that day. When your colleagues dropped those bombs and those people they signed death certificate.

I wish I had more time.

I wish I had the hope of freedom and see my family once again but that ship has sailed.

I guess all in all, I wish I wasn’t an American.

Those are James Wright Foley's last words

    Quote
the family "have never been prouder" of him, and pleading with the kidnappers not to kill any other hostages.

" We have never been prouder of our son Jim. He gave his life trying to expose the world to the suffering of the Syrian people.

"We implore the kidnappers to spare the lives of the remaining hostages. Like Jim, they are innocents. They have no control over American government policy in Iraq, Syria or anywhere in the world.

"We thank Jim for all the joy he gave us. He was an extraordinary son, brother, journalist and person. Please respect our privacy in the days ahead as we mourn and cherish Jim."

    Quote
A video of the beheading of American Journalist James Foley by Isis militants in Iraq is being shared through many media outlets. One of his family members tweeted this earlier.

Out of respect for his family, please avoid watching and sharing the video. Hopefully news outlets will also be pressured to take it down out of respect towards James and his family.

Note: I do realize this could backfire and many of you may now search for the video, but I'm hoping I'll beat some of you to it and you'll make the respectful decision to avoid watching the video as you read the news.

James Foley on his motivation in BBC interview   In 2012, Foley spoke to the BBC at an auction he had helped organise to raise money for the family of Anton Hammerl, a photographer killed in Libya whilst covering the uprising against Col Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.  In the interview, Foley explained what drove him to do his job.
