     OP - June 12, 2014, 10:47 AM

    Very vague title I know.

My question is, would you buy an item of clothing, a bag, or something else, that had the flag of your country of birth on it, or the country of your parents?

And wearing something flaggish for the world cup doesn't count.  Tongue

I ask because as someone who likes to save money, I am not prepared to make a saving on £10, by buying an English flag 'itsa beach towel'.

So many reasons.  It's tacky (to me), it's chavvy (to me...and I know I know, that's so classist of me).  It advertises me as someone who has some sort of national pride, and perhaps a pub going, football watching, British bulldog sort of mentality.

This might sound like stupid reasons.  Trust me as I type, I feel their stupidity because fuck what anyone else thinks right.  I saved a motherfucking tenner.  But......

I have experienced the focus a flag can bring down on you, and I do prefer not to be noticed.  I've worn a whistle at carnival with the Moroccan flag on the strap, and been insulted all day long by Moroccan men for being there, and being dressed how I wanted to be.  I have also worn a whistle with a Brazilian flag, and had sexual attention as a result of it.  I'm not looking to have any attention, and flag displays do drawn attention.

So yea, would you opt to save the money and buy the flag version, or like me, do you find flag wearing just says a bit more than this beach towel was cheap?

and I know this is a dumb topic, but dumb is good some times too.   cool2

Somewhere in Nicaragua there is a Welsh flag beach towel, stolen from my house.

Not over-keen on flag stuff, though Japanese girls do have a happy habit of wearing Union Jack miniskirts.

If I liked the design, yes. If I didn't, no.

Is there some kind of above average sexually promiscuous Brazilian population in London I don't know about?

Cheesy at least the old beach towel is out there enjoying the world.  Let that ease the pain of the theft.

Also that's another thing....I would also look like a tourist.  Grin

No, just an overriding belief that Brazilian women are the hottest around, with big bootys and sexual fire of some type.  If you are tanned, have dark hair, and throw on something that states you are Brazilian, men will come right up to you on the street and hit on you.  not all men of course, but more men than normal.  :/

Honestly, it was an accidental but interesting experiment the whole flag whistles.

Is it a certain type of man, or from all walks of life? I wonder if there's an effect on Brazilians who are subjected to that stereotype, especially from a younger age, a mistrust of others because they only want "one thing" or more likely to sleep around either through social pressure, to be liked/accepted or both. Do you find a hostility to "our women" being involved with Brazilian men for sexual stereotype? I'm assuming it's not just women.

So, what are your thoughts so far? Save a tenner and go for it, or be out an extra tenner on something you actually like?

Is it just a beach towel? I don't know if the whole flag thing is an issue in the UK, but if it's just a towel then I wouldn't care. An extra 10£ is alot of money to spend on a towel, better use it for something more worth it. Had it been a shirt with a flag print on, or a skirt, then I wouldn't wear it if it were for free.

Nope. Don't wear national symbols on clothes. Perhaps if it was "the old country's" flag on independence day, but even then I would be hesitant.

The british flag is considered quite trendy as a symbol or fashion accessory but i wouldnt wear one, however, if i was an american i would be flying the flag outside my window Smiley  why do americans have the flag on display ?

I like a lot of things about my country, but no thank you to strutting around with something decorated with an American flag. Especially in people's perceptions, the flag represents much more than what I want to throw my support behind.

Also, in my opinion, +1 for the tacky thing.

The American flag is pretty cheesy as flags go. There's no symmetry. It's obnoxious red and white candy cane stripes with a bunch of big kindergarten cut-out stars. It only looks good on a flag pole.  The Union Jack lends itself a little more to fashionable adaptations, I think.

All that said, I'd probably still fork over the extra 10 quid. (You guys call your money quid, right?)

Yeah, I cannot even imagine any way to make the American flag seem fashionable or aesthetically pleasing to me. There are much prettier state flags, though, and more interesting ones.

Honestly I have no idea if it's a particular type of man, I tend to skuttle off super fast, make no eye contact, and rarely register faces, clothes, voice...anything.  I'm just like "eeek, a man is trying to speak to me, run"  Cheesy

But to be fair, I react that way even when women try to speak to me..."shit, someone is trying to talk to me....run".

I should never have discovered online communication, it has made me even worse at socialising.

But anyway as to the other questions, I haven't explored questions on resentment over exclusive racial attractions that exclude oneself, but I will be now.....well soon enough lol, I'm on a break from serious subjects.

I'm a low decision maker, I'm still on the fence right now.

The flag thing is a bit of an issue over here, I find it's heavily associated with white BNP/EDL types, and most of the time those waving it, hanging it from the house, getting key items with it, usually fit the profile.

See, I would still be struggling to decide even if it was free, even though it's just a beach towel.  Grin

It's not considered trendy at all to me, or to many people I know.  Tongue  I think a lot of tourists over here go nuts for flag print stuff, as well as like I said, nationalists of a particular persuasion.

I like a lot of things about my country, but no thank you to strutting around with something decorated with an American flag. Especially in people's perceptions, the flag represents much more than what I want to throw my support behind.

Yea exactly.  It has a message behind it.  I like where I am from country wise, weather could be nicer, but still, I'm just not into what the flag represents.

You to? I notice when I turn my PC off it's a nightmare getting internet when I turn it on again so usually leave it running, and tend to have a few tabs open which I don't bother to close when I go to sleep or go out. If you've ever seen me on Who's Online wondering why I've been looking at the same subject for 12+ hours or haven't logged off in however long, that's why.

I have to say I don't tend to associate the flag purely with white nationalists, to me it's just the national symbol, and symbols an island nation with a long and interesting history. I've seen some pretty cool designs I wouldn't mind having on a t-shirt. Plus I actually am quite fond of England/UK. Smiley

The flag (is) heavily associated with white BNP/EDL types,

Which is exactly why I used to be uncomfortable about the Union Jack.

But now the BNP types have migrated to the St George flag (which is much less good), I'm starting to realise the Union Jack is actually a damn good flag.

Japanese girls who wear it may have a vague idea what it is, but you can bet Nicaraguans don't. They just wear it because it looks good, and wear it they do.

Out and about earlier, I think this thread made me more aware of national flags, because I found myself noticing the Union Jack and Saint George Cross more than I usually do. Although that said, it's world cup season, so that could explain it.

The Union Jack really does lend itself to some interesting designs. I've seen a few pieces (clothes) I wouldn't wear if you paid me, others I wouldn't mind but not that fused over, and a few I'd be checking my bank account to see if I could afford them.

I am late in this but oh well:
Wearing a flag on clothing is okay in national pride related things like a World Cup game or Independance Day. My school also did a red white and blue day for spirit week last year and I decided to be a rebel and wore the Union Jack.

HOWEVER, never at any cost or price shall flags be as: Rugs, shoes, underwear or at any way shape or form on the ground. That's plainly disrespectful I cringe every time.

I am not all for flying flags outside just because I am not the type however I have a very large flag of Iraq over my headboard.

Just like Johnny Flynn said, the breath I've taken and the one I must to go on.

See now, I like the Jacket very very much, but still wouldn't wear it because of the flag.  I'm just  not a flag person at all.  No matter how much it lends itself to fashion, I honestly couldn't wear it.
