    I was having a discussion with a local chap who was saying that "allah" was one of the deities worshiped by quraish amongst many others (such as laat, izzat, manat etc) and that he was one of the favoured ones and as such reigned supreme when it was time to be monotheistic. I don't find that line of though too far off but I want to know if anyone else read anything about this?

    What I find hard is a reputable information source surviving all those years of islamic rule. Can anyone direct me to one if it does indeed exist? Arabic or english.  I'd be very interesting in reading more on this subject.

    It's true. Even when reading through the Quran it's clear the Qureish thought Allah was a creator god. They just never really prayed to him unless things got really tough, like if they met danger at sea.

    I got the impression that the "creator" god wasn't payed much attention in comparison to the other gods, just like in most pagan/polytheistic religions.

    I'm sure that that was the case as it makes alot of sense, however that is not the kind of information I accept from word of mouth. Any book on the subject would be interesting I'd assume. A nice title would be "the rise of allah"  Cheesy as he sweeps aside the inferior deities.

    Nope. Although I would advise reading Crones work with a grain of salt. Her conclusions are controversial.

    As far as I know, the word 'Allah' was also used by Arabic speaking Jews and Christians.
