Allpraise etc etc, has been banned for 3 months for breaking the forum rules and continuing to suggest that being raped is the fault of those parading around and tempting men...in other words, victim blaming.

well  that is bit harsh., no one one warned him  and may be he didn't read the rules of the forum carefully..  I am of the opinion correcting the views of people is  more important than banning the folks..

Do not let silence become your legacy.. Question everything

    Noooooo..

Rape/molestation women  is NOT Islam specific.,

You're quite correct, I didn't mean to indicate that muslims are more likely to be rapists than other groups. What I'm saying is that islamic teachings, for example the shit that comes out of the mouths of iERA to take a well known example, justified with 7th century social norms and instructions based on the social interactions and norms of men and women, is propagating this mind set.

    No, Yeezevee.

Harith had already received a smite for the same reason. He was given ample time to consider his posts, but instead decided to be overtly insulting and condescending to members who tried to help him past his absurd views.

The issue of victim blaming in rape cases is a serious one. As this forum exists as a safe place, the rules are clear that apologia for victim blaming will not be tolerated here.

The reason those rules exist are because undoubtedly there are people on this forum who have experienced rape.  Who have questioned whether they deserved it or not.  Who have been shamed into silence because they know they will be blamed in some way.

They come here to heal.  Not to be exposed to yet another space in which they are to blame for their own rape.

It is not as if he hadn't been smited already, nor that he wasn't aware that he was breaking the rule.  He was reminded of this.

To rape someone is a choice, every single time, not a fucking inevitability you moron.  finmad

While I agree with the overall sentiment it made me think the following:

What about children that rape, what about the mentally handicapped that rape?

The same as children who commit any other crime, asbie.  They need to be dealt with, but their culpability would be less than an adult because their understanding of their actions would be lower.  Ditto for those who are insane or who have the mental age of children.

Yeezevee, I usually agree with you. I try to work with someone whenever possible, so long as there's a chance that we may get somewhere with a conversation. But I think Harith made it extremely clear that he was not to be corrected and that he was not going to take responsibility for any of the horrible things he said. When confronted about it, he brazenly directed the blame at other members.

If he ever decides that he does want to learn, all of the criticisms of his beliefs have already been laid out for him on this thread, and he can take the initiative to challenge the way he thinks and behaves. But you cannot forcibly change someone's mind, and keeping a person around who is promoting an immoral and dangerous mentality in the hopes that they will eventually learn the error of their ways is not wise, especially in a situation like this. Some of the what he was saying was very disturbing, and there was no end in sight.

do you think I was wrong HM??  It would be nice if you could give  me that word and verse number  from Arabic version of Quran "not from some English Translations"

Agreed, but in this case I'm more concerned with the agency of the actors. Kind of a philosophical musing really.

The nature of rape I don't think is really indicated by the agency or intent of the perpetrator, imo.

With the exception of my husband, I'd be glad for anyone to find the forum. Grin Hopefully his temporary ban will give him a push to reconsider his views. CEMB has done that for me a couple times already.

Do you mean the normal biology of transfers through cell membranes? Or are you talking about the fuel cell technology? Because the latter I don't know the first thing about!

I can stop immortality pretty easily. But I am working on it, Quod. I am trying my hardest to shake this aging thing! Grin

My goodness you seem  to have lot of background in Science from synthetic membranes in fuels cells to natural membrane of Biological cells., No I was talking about proton transporting proteins  and proton/cation transport through biological membranes .,

Interesting point here is ,  unlike large cations which do need proton channel proteins to transport across cell membrane., can protons tunnel through membranes without protein channels to transport them due to their size?

The weird thing about biology and chemistry (and I'd imagine this also applies to physics) is that you really have to learn a little bit of everything. But in my case, and I know this is the case for a lot of the others I've spoken to at least, you definitely get tunnel vision on only the parts of the field you really need at that time when you're doing research. I often have to look things back up that I learned all the way back as a Sophomore or a Junior just to remind myself and reinforce my understanding of the particular mechanisms or whatever it is that I'm looking at at the time. Grin

Anyway, I think this is what you were asking: without dedicated transport and in normal conditions, without being treated by anything, a cell membrane may still let some protons go through, but my understanding is that it is minute. I can't say I know the precise mechanism. Here is an interesting article on the subject: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1305461/

And I hope my last reply cleared that up. the only reason i mentioned skirt was because the video spoke of skirts. and then when everyone started jumping on that i added burkah/hijab/ niqab too. which is why i also said boys get raped too. and like someone else pointed out even earlier about the gang rape of the 3 old. it was not the clothes. it was the men and their inability to control themselves.

And that is all i am saying, we should not be surprised that men want to impose their will on women. we should not be wide eyed or flabberghasted. or wonder 'why the fuck did this happen'. we teach our kids to not talk to strangers. but if they get kidnapped, we do not blame the kids. this is all i am saying. we cannot NOT tell our kids to not talk to strangers because "well people should have the common sense to not kidnap kids".  so go ahead kid... run wild and free because i hope people have that much common sense to not kidnap you. no parent will ever do that.

do i want that to be changed? ofcourse. but just having good thoughts does not cut it.

I agree with every thing you said 100% except that bit. would you say the same is true for men raping women at college dorms or frat houses? that it was primarily about ego and the sexual rape was a secondary thing?

Cornflower, honestly, you are no more asking for rape than this woman:

    (Clicky for piccy!)

in my first post i said skirts because i was commenting directly on the video. but when people started jumping on that, i added burkah/hijab. so for me, you posting that pic and asking me 'am i asking to get raped' is like another woman posting her pic in a burkah and asking me the same question. ofcourse you are not asking to be raped. but do you think a rapist cares? do you think a rapist will ask, hey cornflower do you want to be raped? ofcourse not. and however true it may be that clothes do not effect on getting raped, the rapist would think so. for him, it is just another justification to committing his crime.

you look young enough to be my daughter so let me reply to from that pov. as a father it would deeply concern me that you will be going out wearing that. not because i think you are asking to be raped. but because a rapist might look at you, and think 'oh look at her.. she probably gives to everyone' or something along those lines and use that as a justification. do you understand what i am trying to say? you may put that dress on and think it is absolutely ok. but there are men out in the world who will look at you in your dress and think 'she is a legit target for rape'

is that true? does putting on that skirt makes a legit target? ofcourse not. but it does not matter to the guy who will think that and then rape you. was that your fault for putting that dress on? ofcourse not, but just like we teach kids to be careful when they are playing, to not talk to strangers, is just the kind of concern women should keep in mind when they put on dresses like that.

not because they are now asking for it, but becasue some degenerate prick somewhere will look at you in that dress and think that. we are living in a world where men like that exist. men with no self control. they are just looking for a reason. whatever that reason is. i hope you understand what it is i am trying to say.

And i doubt dawah man changed his mind. he is a showman. it is more likly that his masters at iERA told him to take it down for the sheer absurd nature of the video.

Since Harith is banned for 3 months, I don't know if this is worth it, but I really felt the need to respond.

Thank you Harith, but I am in no need for your "fatherly" advice. You have still ignored the fact that clothing makes no difference in a rape. So why are you going on about the clothing? Rape doesn't happen because men get a boner in the presence of a woman. It's about control and power. It's about men feeling they have the right to a woman's body. It's men who rape their wives/girlfriends, it's the date, the friend and occasionally the stranger in the club/at the party/lurker in the bushes. It's men who look at a woman irregardless of how they are dressed, and think that tthey are entitled.

It doesn't matter if men try excusing themselves by slut-shaming the woman. It doesn't make it the  "true" reason. People judging the criminal should know better. He would have raped her, or any other woman, even if her skirt was longer or if she had less make-up on.

You are re-producing these patriarchal and mysogynist ideas when you tried to give me some fatherly advice. I don't meed it.

No, Harith. Rape will happen as long as men exist who think they have a right to female sexuality and body. If you want to tackle the issue of rape, stop re-producing the ideas that lead to it. And get it once and for all that I could be wearing a burqa, and still be raped because it has to do with me being a woman. Not how "modest" or "careful" I am. There's a higher chance for me geting raped in my own bedroom, than by a stranger in the night.

By your logic, we should all be living like they do in Saudi. I hope you understand this. Problem is, women still get raped there wearing the niqab. It doesn't add up, does it?

You know reading this (and all the many responses to it, what stands out to me is that this HArith guy thinks this way. It leads me to ask, when he looks at a beautifully dressed woman is he thinking all sorts of shameful things about her? Forgive me if I sound naive here, but I know plenty of men who while may appreciate a beautiful woman are not thinking of raping her. Rape  mentality stems from minds like these,
You can look at a beautiful woman and think, wow she's lovely, I want her number. Or even think sexually what it would be like to be with her, but rape? Is that honestly the first thing that would come to this guys mind?

There are so many aspects of physical attraction, so many levels, so many different tastes, why is it rape is always highlighted in so many cultures.

I honestly think people miss the issue of finding out the real reasons behind rape, is this guy honestly implying that men see a beautiful woman and the rape-dar goes DING DING DING

Another point, a bit off topic here, is people will say religion is the basis for all morals, I'm not sure if a study has been carried out to show how many of the rapists out there are from a religious background.

In all honesty it is the sexual repression that causes a problem more then anything else.

PS Cornflower I love that skirt, and no I don't want to rape you Wink

Lol lua, that's why I put up that picture. Do you seriously think "oh, there goes a potential rape victim, she should know better" or "I'm gonna rape the bitch", or do you think "oh there goes a woman in a pretty skirt" (if you now happen to like the skirt). It's creepy that it's that kind of thinking that obviously some men go around with when seeing women dressed like me, or like  the lady in Hariths picture Smiley he is reproducing the values, norms and ideas that are one cause behind why men think they have a right to female sexuality. And I don't even think he is aware of it. He reminded me if that prick on Dr Phil when he had an episode on slut-shaming. :-/

To be honest, that particular outfit was put up there to make a point. I would wear a different non see-through top with the skirt. Or the shirt with shorts or pants. And I would wear it regularly, without tying it up Tongue I like skin, but I'm still a bit "conservative".
