Just come to terms with the fact I have an issue with drinking and have done for a while. It's surfaced over the past few months and as all substance abuse does, impacted on every facet of my daily life.

Im not physically dependent at all, thats the final stage but over the past 6-8 months ive steadily drank more and more with long periods of 'blackouts' being the norm as well as 36-48 hr binges.

Ive spoken to health professionals who have told me I am exhibiting signs of the early stages of addiction and will end up physically dependent in 10-15 years if I continue. I've therefore decided to give up drinking for good.

I posted this as a means of catharsis but also to ask if anyone else here has had any problems with alcohol or other substances and what they did to combat the depression that comes with the realisation of a problem.

Don't read all those science books bro, you'll just get more confused.

That's funny. The more science I read, the less confused I get.

Well done for admitting you have a problem. What is the cause(s)?

I think there are a few. I have been quite angry at things in general though this didnt manifest itself when drinking. Im focusing on staying sober first then tackling issues. I just know I cant go back to the bottle. Im hoping I have the strength to do it.

No problems myself. I have an addictive personality according to some. I grew up around substances abusers, so I sympathise with you. I know how it controls lives.

I honestly don't think you should feel depressed at realising you have a problem. If you can't admit it, you can't deal with it. Nothing to be ashamed of, admitting you have a problem. Quite the opposite in fact.

Having the strength is easier when you can unload when you need to. If you don't have someone in your personal life, you have my Skype. Don't be afraid to say hello, or shoot me a PM here. I might not always know what to say, but I'll be happy to lend an ear.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

Wouldn't say i was depressed at the realisation per se, just the damage its caused.but y'know what? I was up last night and thought 'new start'. I thought of the stuff I wanna achieve personally and professionally and decided to just go for it.
