Gaza-Israel Peace Moves  and  Peace  news..

Gaza truce holds as Israel withdraws  says news from BBC

    Quote
A 72-hour humanitarian truce is holding in Gaza, halting four weeks of conflict that has claimed more than 1,900 lives. Israel and Gaza militants maintained fire up until the truce started at 08:00 local time (05:00 GMT).

Israel says it has withdrawn all forces to positions outside Gaza, and some residents there are now returning to discover the fate of their homes. The truce has drawn an international welcome, and the focus for a longer deal will now fall on talks in Cairo.
    'Durable solution'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement commending the armed forces. "This was a complex operation that made heroes of soldiers under difficult combat conditions," he said.

Well as long as it didn't had "WINNING ELECTION MOTIVE" behind this operation.. It is OK to take out those tunnels.. and those missiles..

Palestinian Public do not need them ., what they need is school.. businesses.. jobs.. and market for their work whatever little they make ..  So open those gates .. let the people move around Egypt, Israel  to Jordan freely..  that should be the future goal.,  whatever action you take that should be the future goal..

So the truce is still standing now after more than 16 hours and Israel has gone to the negotiation table in Cairo.

This is from Times of Israel:

    Quote
The IDF presented its assessment of a possible reoccupation of the Gaza Strip to the security cabinet this evening, saying that the cost of reestablishing Israeli control over the entire territory would be hundreds of soldiers’ lives, endangering peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan, and tens of billions of shekels per year, Channel 2 reports.

According to diplomatic correspondent Udi Segal, the cost in Palestinian lives would spike into the thousands, and the clearing of the territory of terrorist threats would take no less than five years, the IDF says.

“We would long for [the days of Israel's occupation of] southern Lebanon,” an IDF official said.

None of the ministers present voiced approval, the channel says.

I wonder (hope!) if that was leaked to embrace the Israeli public opinion for some real concessions to the Gazans in exchange for a long-term binding truce (as already proposed by Hamas in 2006 and as late as a couple of weeks back) under international surveillance and guarding of points of entry.

Also there are rumours of Israeli journalist Amos Harel from Haaretz having found out from his close contacts among the brass in the Israeli defense forces that they have lost hundreds of Israeli soldiers, and not the official number of 64.

Maybe "leaked" for that reason, or maybe just to publicly counteract the nutters (especially in the Knesset) who have been advocating re-occupation. I was pretty sure the IDF did not want to have to re-occupy. Good to see them saying so to their political masters. The assessment sounds pretty realistic.

Palestinian refugees displaced again as they flee Islamic State in Iraq says news _ Sheren Khalel and Matthew Vickery on August 6, 2014

Palestinian Ambassador Nazmi Hazouri to Kurdistan speaks to Palestinian residents of Iraq and Kurdistan about the current situations in Gaza and Iraq. (Photo: Abed Al Qaisi)

    Quote
Qasi Mustafa Abu Khalil and his family packed all of their belongings into one car and fled their home in the middle of the night. They were too nervous to look back as they left Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq—all eyes were glued on the road for Islamic State (IS) checkpoints, and the sky for Iraqi Government military jets.

The Abu Khalil’s have lived as refugees in Iraq since their family fled Palestine in 1948 during Israel’s war of independence, which forcibly displaced over 700,000 Palestinians from their homes and into the life of a refugee.

    Quote
Today, like many Palestinians in Iraq, Abu Khalil and his family find themselves fleeing for their lives yet again. Over 300 Palestinians have recently fled the city of Mosul, which was taken over early June by The Islamic State (IS), formerly known as the Islamic State of of Iraq and the Syria (ISIS), an offshoot of the Islamic militant group Al Qaeda.

“In my mind I don’t think I will ever come back to Mosul,” Abu Khalil told Mondoweiss.

Since IS’s siege of Mosul and the surrounding areas an estimated one million people have fled the area seeking refuge. These refugees have reported whippings in the streets, executions for smoking tobacco hookah pipes and a crackdown on the movement of women. Regular life has been turned upside down in Mosul, where IS militants decide the rules and who they believe are following them.

Abu Khalil said the problems in Mosul started with the IS’s takeover of the city but continued with the Iraqi Army’s airstrikes against the city after the seige. The airstrikes are meant to target IS but the people fleeing say they feel they are indiscriminate—leaving the people of Mosul constantly afraid from both the militants on the ground and the planes in the sky.

“It is scary now that these Islamic State people are in Mosul, because we can’t predict them, we don’t know what they want or if they like Palestinians. And now the Iraqi government is bombing everything. They’re doing this everywhere, the army airstrikes can hit anyone at anytime,” Abu Khalil said.

Issa Mustafa and his whole family have also fled Mosul, choosing an uncertain future over taking the risk that IS will decide being Palestinian is some sort of infraction.

“We got out of the whole situation in Mosul, it’s not safe to the people, to my family, to the Palestinians living there. We had a problem from the Islamic State from when they came into Mosul.  Because of this reason we left and got out, we don’t know where these Islamic State people are from, who supports them, what directions they have, or whether or not they will like Palestinians,” Mustafa told Mondoweiss.

His six children are all young and remain unaware of why they left their home at 2am to pile into their family car and flee from the only home they have known throughout their short lives. Mustafa is at least happy his children are young, he hopes by not knowing, they will keep their innocence...........

well read the rest at the link...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMVh9Iwf6Xk

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c10-x3BeGHM

Mustafa said fears his sons will become refugees yet again with their future families, just as his he and his forefathers have for three generations before him.
    Quote
“My grandfather and my father were refugees and now I am a refugee again and my sons are also now refugees from this,” Mustafa said. “My grandfather and myself are two time refugees, him in 1948 and 1967, me in 1967 and now. For my family it is now three times a refugee, 1948, 1967 and now. Palestinians have been tortured more than any other group in the world.”

That says it all.. why they need to be refugees? why Palestinians kids born in these countries can not they get permanent citizenship?

That is indeed  Humiliation of Palestinian Refugees and the leaders of these countries using people of Palestine and their suffering keeping their power and buying villas in west..

well life goes on .,  Thank you leaders of Palestinians, Thank you  followers of Ariel Sharon., And Thank you leaders, kings, Heroes of Islam of Middle eastern countries and their supporters from west.. ..

From that link: "Previous fighting in Gaza between Israeli and Hamas forces and other Palestinian armed groups has resulted in near-total impunity for serious violations of international humanitarian law. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas should urgently seek International Criminal Court (ICC) jurisdiction over crimes committed on and from Palestinian territory, as a step toward reducing the accountability gap for grave abuses and deterring crimes in violation of international law, Human Rights Watch said."

I saw this initiative (applying for ICC membership) on the news on Tuesday night. I think it's a very good idea. If Palestinian territory were officially covered by the ICC it should (hopefully) be a way of reining in excesses on both sides.

Problem is that Israel refuses to sign the ICC treaty (Rome statute) and will probably be very upset of Abbas actually signs it.

International law is a well-known Arab-Nazi conspiracy to destroy Israel which is why they have the gazillion UN Security Council resolutions they continue to shit on every day.

I'm not concerned with them being upset. I'm concerned with getting another non-violent method of reducing excesses on both sides. Smiley

And funny thing about those UN resolutions. People make a big deal of them, but often those same people also make a big deal of claiming that the creation of Israel was not legitimate. This is rather hypocritical. If you're going to regard the UN as authoritative, then since the UN created Israel you have to regard the creation of Israel as legitimate. If you're not going to regard the creation of Israel as legitimate, then you are effectively forfeiting the right to hold up whatever UN resolutions suit your cause.

People often forget that plenty of other borders were redrawn in the aftermath of WW1 and WW2, but nobody ever gives a bugger about those. TBH, as soon as anyone starts bitching about the creation of Israel I just categorise them as idiots. It's a done deal. It was as legitimate as anything else the UN has ever done. It should not be regarded as relevant to discussions about the area in the 21st century. Hanging on to resentment about that is a waste of time.

Well when Israel gets upset it tends resolve the issue with the best way it knows how to settle differences - by killing people and destroying their habitats. Repeat ad infinitum to keep the resentment down to a manageable level. "Mowing the grass" as the Israelis call it.

However the latest thing I've got from Cairo is that talks actually are going on with some progress.

And funny thing about those UN resolutions. People make a big deal of them, but often those same people also make a big deal of claiming that the creation of Israel was not legitimate. The UN did not create Israel. UN came with a partition plan which would give 55% of the territory to 1/4 of the population, by large very recent immigrants. That is why the Arabs said no. Everyone would have done that. At that point the Jewish militias started the ethnic cleansing and half a year later Israel unilaterally declared itself a state and then the Arab neighbours attacked. However Israel had made an agreement with the enemy with the largest army, Jordan, that Jordan would "conquer" the West Bank and East Jerusalem and let Israel have the rest.

However the UN recognised Israel in 1949 as both the Western and Eastern powers supported it. Not with 55% of the territory, but with 72%.

Note that Israel has still not defined its borders. It is a country with no formal recognition of its own size.

But the recognition of Israel by the UN in 1949 should in my opinion be the starting point and *THEN* we can look at the UN resolutions.

UN is about international law which was created on the lessons of WW1 and WW2 and Israel repeatedly ignoring those laws has been a huge obstacle to the rule of international law ever since its creation. I.e. why should Assad care if Israel does not?

Well at least we agree that Israel's recognition by the UN should mean it is as legitimate as any other state, so there's no point grumbling about it being illegitimate. People still like to hang onto that, but it's pointless and stupid.

Nikolaj., a careful look at what UN did since its creation tells me different story. You have to realize that UN was spineless body at that time and it is spineless body  even now.,  It was always controlled by UN security council and often it is influenced by its members and their country governments/government policies  of that time.

And please go through this pdf document at  http://www.refworld.org/docid/3ae68c2d0.html on "Study of Statelessness "  United Nations August 1949..

Well, it is indeed not very pragmatic and pragmatism is needed to solve this and future issues.

Nikolaj., a careful look at what UN did since its creation tells me different story. You have to realize that UN was spineless body at that time and it is spineless body  even now.,  It was always controlled by UN security council and often it is influenced by its members and their country governments/government policies  of that time.

One of the reasons it is spineless is because Israel does not give a shit about that UN Security Council:

Rogue State: Israeli Violations of U.N. Security Council Resolutions:

    Quote
Following is a list of United Nations Security Council resolutions directly critical of Israel for violations of U.N. Security Council resolutions, the U.N. Charter, the Geneva Conventions, international terrorism, or other violations of international law.

Res. 57 (Sep. 18, 1948) – Expresses deep shock at the assassination of the U.N. Mediator in Palestine, Count Folke Bernadotte, by Zionist terrorists.

Res. 89 (Nov. 17, 1950) – Requests that attention be given to the expulsion of “thousands of Palestine Arabs” and calls upon concerned governments to take no further action “involving the transfer of persons across international frontiers or armistice lines”, and notes that Israel announced that it would withdraw to the armistice lines.

Res. 93 (May 18, 1951) – Finds that Israeli airstrikes on Syria on April 5, 1951 constitutes “a violation of the cease-fire”, and decides that Arab civilians expelled from the demilitarized zone by Israel should be allowed to return.

Res. 100 (Oct. 27, 1953) – Notes that Israel had said it would stop work it started in the demilitarized zone on September 2, 1953.

Res. 101 (Nov. 24, 1953) – Finds Israel’s attack on Qibya, Jordan on October 14-15, 1953 to be a violation of the cease-fire and “Expresses the strongest censure of that action”.

Res. 119 (Oct. 31, 1956) – Considers that “a grave situation has been created” by the attack against Egypt by the forces of Britain, France, and Israel.

Res. 171 (Apr. 9, 1962) – Reaffirms resolution 111 and determines that Israel’s attack on Syria on March 16-17, 1962 “constitutes a flagrant violation of that resolution”.

Res. 228 (Nov. 25, 1966) – “Deplores the loss of life and heavy damage to property resulting from the action” by Israel in the southern Hebron area on November 13, 1966, and “Censures Israel for this large-scale military action in violation of the United Nations Charter” and the armistice agreement between Israel and Jordan.

Res. 237 (Jun. 14, 1967) – Calls on Israel “to ensure the safety, welfare and security of the inhabitants where military operations have taken place” during the war launched by Israel on June 5, 1967 “and to facilitate the return of those inhabitants who have fled the areas since the outbreak of hostilities”.

Res. 242 (Nov. 22, 1967) – Emphasizes “the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war”, emphasizes that member states have a commitment to abide by the U.N. Charter, and calls for the “Withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied” during the June 1967 war.

Res. 248 (Mar. 24, 1968) – Observes that the Israeli attack on Jordan “was of a large-scale and carefully planned nature”, “Deplores the loss of life and heavy damage to property”, “Condemns the military action launched by Israel in flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and the cease-fire resolutions”, and “Calls upon Israel to desist from” further violations of resolution 237.

Res. 250 (Apr. 27, 1968) – Considers “that the holding of a military parade in Jerusalem will aggravate tensions in the area and have an adverse effect on a peaceful settlement of the problems in the area” and “Calls upon Israel to refrain from holding the military parade in Jerusalem which is contemplated” for May 2, 1968.

Res. 251 (May 2, 1968) – Recalls resolution 250 and “Deeply deplores the holding by Israel of the military parade in Jerusalem” on May 2, 1968 “in disregard of” resolution 250.

Res. 262 (Dec. 31, 1968) – Observes “that the military action by the armed forces of Israel against the civil International Airport of Beirut was premeditated and of a large scale and carefully planned nature”, and condemns Israel for the attack.

Res.265 (Apr. 1, 1969) – Expresses “deep concern that the recent attacks on Jordanian villages and other populated areas were of a pre-planned nature, in violation of resolutions” 248 and 256, “Deplores the loss of civilian life and damage to property”, and “Condemns the recent premeditated air attacks launched by Israel on Jordanian villages and populated areas in flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and the cease-fire resolutions”.

Res. 267 (Jul. 3, 1969) – Recalls resolution 252 and General Assembly resolutions 2253 and 2254, notes that “since the adoption of the above-mentioned resolutions Israel has taken further measures tending to change the status of the City of Jerusalem”, reaffirms “the established principle that acquisition of territory by military conquest is inadmissible”, “Deplores the failure of Israel to show any regard for the resolutions”, “Censures in the strongest terms all measures taken to change the status of the City of Jerusalem”, “Confirms that all legislative and administrative measures and actions taken by Israel which purport to alter the status of Jerusalem, including expropriation of land and properties thereon, are invalid and cannot change that status”, and urgently calls on Israel to rescind the measures taken to annex Jerusalem.

Res. 316 (Jun. 26, 1972) – Deplores “the tragic loss of life resulting from all acts of violence”, expresses grave concern “at Israel’s failure to comply with Security Council resolutions” 262, 270, 280, 285, and 313 “calling on Israel to desist forthwith from any violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon”, calls on Israel to abide by the resolutions, and condemns “the repeated attacks of Israeli forces on Lebanese territory and population in violation of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and Israel’s obligations thereunder”.

Res. 317 (Jul. 21, 1972) – Notes resolution 316, deplores the fact that Israel had not yet released “Syrian and Lebanese military and security personnel abducted by Israeli armed forces from Lebanese territory” on June 21, 1972, and calls on Israel to release the prisoners.

Res. 332 (Apr. 21, 1972) – “Condemns the repeated military attacks conducted by Israel against Lebanon and Israel’s violation of Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty” in violation of the U.N. Charter, the armistice agreement, and cease-fire resolutions.

Yeez is right. The UN has always been a paper tiger. International law, like any other set of laws, can only work if it's backed by force. In the UN, that force is the U.S. so action is only taken against countries that go rogue that America doesn't like and the other major powers are meh about (Iraq, Libya, Serbia). It's a structural issue with the UN and the nature of global politics that renders it spineless.

I saw this initiative (applying for ICC membership) on the news on Tuesday night. I think it's a very good idea. If Palestinian territory were officially covered by the ICC it should (hopefully) be a way of reining in excesses on both sides.

This would be a very good idea. Though, of course Israel would continue to refuse to sign the Rome Statute.

Oh sure, but it would count against them in the PR war, which is important to them. So, it should provide another useful check on extremes. And of course it would also apply to any Palestinian group, including Hamas, which would mean that Hamas couldn't fire rockets if it wanted to stay on the right side. If Hamas doesn't fire rockets, Israel has no reason to attack Gaza.

Gaza conflict: Hamas warns negotiators in Cairo it is ready to engage in a long war if demands not met

    Quote
The armed wing of Hamas has called on Palestinian negotiators in Cairo not to extend a 72-hour truce unless their demands, in particular for the opening of Gaza's port, were met and warned it was ready to engage in a long war.

"We urge the Palestinian delegation negotiating not to renew the truce except after the acceptance in principle, particularly to the port (opening), and if there is no acceptance then we ask the delegation to withdraw from talks," a fighter, his face hidden behind a Palestinian scarf, said in a televised statement from Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades.

The statement was aired on the Qatari-owned Al Jazeera news network.

Hamas, in control of Gaza since 2007, has ruled out giving up its weapons, and a senior official earlier threatened to quit the talks, demanding the blockade of Gaza be lifted and prisoners held by Israel freed.

Arab states cannot stop Israel: OIC secretary-general

    Quote
ISLAMABAD: Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) Secretary-General Iyad Ameen Abdullah Madani admitted on Monday that the Arab states cannot take any practical steps to stop Israel from attacking Gaza.

Mr Madani was speaking at an event titled ‘Contemporary Challengers of the Muslim World: The Vision and Role of the OIC’ at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad.

“In 1967, the Arabs faced a defeat as Israeli forces entered the Sinai Desert, West Bank of the Jordan River and the Golan Heights. Arabs cannot imagine stopping the support for Palestinians, but practically they are not in a position to do anything,” he claimed. “OIC has been trying its best to classify the killing of Palestinians as a ‘war crime’, but unfortunately the preachers of human rights are not only supporting Israel but are also providing political shield to it,” he said.

However, while discussing the issues of Central Africa and Myanmar, Mr Madani claimed that OIC played its due role in resolving these issues. Mr Madani said, at the moment, Muslim countries were facing more problems within the state than from outside their borders.

“The main issue is sectarian conflict. Every sect claims that their Islam should be implemented. Extremism is also affecting the countries. OIC has been trying to resolve the issues,” he said. He added that OIC’s human rights wing has been trying to ensure equal rights to the citizens of the 57 member states, even non-Muslims.

“Being a founding member, Pakistan is one of the most important members and it has been playing its role for the development of the Muslim world. OIC has started focusing on science, technology and economic development of member countries,” he said.

Regarding the Kashmir dispute, Mr Madani said that although he has come to Pakistan to devise a strategy for the Kashmir issue, under an agreement India and Pakistan labeled Kashmir as a bilateral issue. “In India there are more Muslims compared to any other country, so OIC has to consider all aspects,” he said.

Retired Lt-Gen Mohammad Asad Durrani, who also served as Pakistan’s ambassador in Saudi Arabia, declared that OIC had become dysfunctional. “However I believe that it is not OIC’s fault, it is the fault of the Muslim Ummah which is not taking the organisation seriously,” he said.

There have been rumours floating around that KSA and the UAE were actually funding this attack on Gaza. I find that extremely hard to believe but it's a very popular conspiracy theory here. There's widespread outrage at these Sunni countries for their betrayal of the Palestinians. I'm surprised that there's no outrage in Egypt at Sisi's role in enforcing the blockade.

It's over for the Hamas. Out of all the conflicts I have seen, this is the one where most people, even American Atheists seemed to be in defense of Israel. I haven't see this much Pro Israeli sentiment from American Atheists in any other skirmishes that have taken place in recent years.

I don't know most of the UK Ex Christian Atheist or the rest of the other EU Atheists are in terms who they support, but it seems that most of the Atheist that are pro Palestinians are the Ex Muslim Atheists.

I do not think Hama can play the "Israeli is committing genocide against Palestinians" card anymore. Either they drastically change their fighting tactics or they will suffer extinction with the world being behind Israel.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad have denied an extension of the cease fire because Israel reportedly has denied all their demands of ending the siege and reconstruction in Gaza.

No word on the stance of Fatah, PFLP and DLFP which all also are in Cairo so far.

IDF warns of an expected upcoming heavy barrage of rockets as they think Hamas will try to show they are still able to deliver a military response.

However almost all rockets fired in this conflict has been made from water pipes and common household and agricultural products. Only a few fired allegedly came from Iran or Syria.

Hostilities will resume in 20 minutes.

    Evidence?

No. Hamas will not face extinction. They will either become irrelevent (via self implosion) or be forced to change tactics.

So long as the Israeli Government continues it's war mongering the world will never be behind it. The world will always, as it does now, side with the innocents that are dying on both sides. It is clear which side is the most disproportionate.

Hamas refuses to disarm and wants to continue it's "resistance" but still have the Israelis have open borders, lift the blockade and release prisoners. IOW, they want to have their cake and eat it too.

"Whoever tries to take our weapons, we will take his life," said Izzat al-Rishq, a senior Hamas official.

Once again, Hamas has chosen jihad over the welfare of Gazans.

    Evidence?

All over the place, Facebook posts from people inside Gaza. But this Times of Israel live update blog is normally well-informed.

    Times of Israel live blog

It also has this information about the Gazan rockets:

    Quote
The vast majority of rockets fired by Hamas at Israel over the past month were made in Gaza using civilian materials, a senior Israeli military official said late Thursday.

“The vast majority of those launched were homemade, only a small minority were Fajr 5 made by Iran,” the official told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Gaza manufacturers of these rockets used “water pipes” of different diameters for the bodies of the rockets, filling them with explosives made from materials such as products used in agriculture, the official said.

Hamas had adapted to manufacturing its own weapons after Egypt had cracked down on smuggling through tunnels in the Rafah area into the Palestinian enclave, the official said.

Men from outside Gaza had in the past taught locals how to build the weapons, while some Gazans went to other countries in the region, including Syria and Iran, to acquire knowledge in the field, the Israeli official says, estimating some 150 people in Gaza were directly involved in producing projectiles.

Agree on Hamas. After all they won 55% of the Palestinian parliament before Israel and Fatah tried to violently subjugate them which backfired in Gaza and Hamas took complete (well, as complete as you can in Gaza) control there.

So Hamas will be a force to deal with in the future too. It has factions so it will eventually break up and Palestine will have their own version of "Real IRA" to deal with when a permanent solution finally is agreed upon.

And so will Israel. They already got one prime minister assassinated because of his peace talks with the Palestinians and everything Israel has in practice done since has been to avoid the two-state solution.

The pro-Israel crowd has been saying this all through this conflict; that everyone supports Israel and the world is turning on Hamas. The pro-Palestinian side has been saying the exact opposite; that Israel is becoming increasingly isolated and losing the PR war. I think Israel is becoming a pariah state and the pressure on them is increasing but Hamas' position isn't notably stronger either.

Frankly I think this pro-Palestine/pro-Israel shit is fucking retarded. Unless you're salivating for a result where one side gets annihilated, any solution will have to be negotiated. That means both sides need to be involved. The bottom line is that it is impossible to be pro-Palestine in any sane sense without being prepared to be pro-Israel to some degree. It is equally impossible to be pro-Israel in any sane sense without being prepared to be pro-Palestine to some degree.
