Just been reading this (doesn't everybody!) and looked up Islam. It was a minor world religion then, not that important compared with what was going on that year! The Space Shuttle had been completed but not yet launched, Legionnaires Disease had happened but not yet named, Israel and Egypt had signed a peace agreement.

My impression was that religion was not that important as an identifier!

Maybe if people identified themselves in other ways, where they are from, their language, and not use what are actually very strange self identifiers?

For example, article in Observer by Paddy Ashdown uses the term "Islam"several times.

Why? Would not a specific term about the actual organisation be more appropriate?

Islam is the problem. Not the interpretation. But the ACTUAL religion itself - the Qur'an and Hadith literature inspire IS.

No free mixing of the sexes is permitted on these forums or via PM or the various chat groups that are operating.

Women must write modestly and all men must lower their case.

I think my point is that it was not recognised as such in 1978. What happened?

Why did religions get such airtime when really they were becoming a private hobby of eccentrics?
