Yep, before going into battle (assuming they had the chance of course) they used to bathe and do their hair immaculately. There's an anecdote about a spy for one of their enemies reporting to his leader before a famous battle (can't remember the details offhand) and this king started laughing because he assumed he would be dealing with a bunch of pansies.
He stopped laughing when his advisors pointed out that this behaviour meant the Spartans were preparing to fight to the death and were some of the most formidable warriors he'd ever meet.
Yeh, it was spy of either Darius or Xerxes (sp) who saw them do it. I know it happened at thermopylae (sp, lol)
