    Anyone read Waking Up by Sam Harris? I am trying to get a copy of the books. I managed to read one chapter of it and it seemed really good and insightful.

    Anyway he has guided meditations online that have tried out. I don't completely grasp the concept of meditation yet, but I just kinda like being by myself meditating under the stars in silence. I think it really helps the anxiety problems I have been having of late.

    Anyone else meditate? In what ways does it help you?

    He knows his shit when it comes to meditation. He's certainly not the only go-to guy, but he's a good stop-off point for anyone interested in meditation from a neurological point of view and comparative methods.

    Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

    I do a pathetic knees-bent standing meditation for half an hour a couple of times a week. I play music, which I probably shouldn't. My mind races. I don't concentrate. I don't breathe properly. It still helps.

    His guided meditations are a good way to get started. I am still a beginner but I have had many friends transformed by meditation, and apparently if you can get good at it you can completely clear your mind of anxiety and depression

    I really like meditating and static stretching before boxing or other combat sports. It allows me to enter a sort of calm frenzy, however oxymoronic that may sound.

    I meditate. I try to do it every day. Started with guided meditations then moved to doing it without guidance. It helps a lot with my anxiety.

    ^ I had the same problem when first beginning. Some meditation claim to stay focused , others to let the thoughts through and not fight them and etc...

    I think the best way is to find what works best for you and makes you calm. The most important thing is being consistent.

    You need to start by focusing on your breath. That's the basis of all meditation. Your breath grounds you in the present moment. Focusing on your thoughts is essentially a test to see how mindful you are. The point of it is to let your mind wander but learn to be aware that your thoughts are thoughts and not let them control you, like they're a movie playing in your mind that you're watching without being in. If you get dragged into your thoughts, focus on your breath again and start over.

    When I did it as a child, I just started counting my breath. I think I did a four count on it, counting four breaths over and over. That is a really simple way of emptying the mind (well, save for the counting).

    I agree with inception, sleep is the best meditation lol   i'm such a zoned out, layed back person that i think i spend my entire life in constant meditation. lol

    I think sleep is underrated in our society.
    Everything centres around waking up early , which is a pain in the ass.

    Ive skipped so many classes just for sleeping a bit more lol

    While at work I often daydream about taking the next day off, dropping the children at daycare, and sleeping all day. Sounds like heaven. Not practical in any way, though.

    Meditation is the opposite of being zoned out.

    That's not meditation. Meditation is about being present in the moment. If anything, people who are always in deep thought are the ones who would benefit from meditation the most.

    I've struggled with a lot of anxiety because I used to always be stuck in my head. Meditation helps ground me.

    was just joking around when i said i am zoned out, meaning that i appear that im in deep  meditation to everyone as i am often lost inside my own head switched off from the world half the time : ) 

    Your'e right meditation is for clearing the mind not filling it.  I have a terrible problem also and suffer with a mind full of scrambled thoughts, i have tried meditation, stillness, clearing the chakras etc when i used to be with a spiritual new age group but nothing works for me.
