Sydney siege: Gunman takes hostages in Lindt cafe

    15 December 2014 - Last updated at 00:50

At least one gunman has taken several people hostage at a cafe in the Australian city of Sydney.

Pictures on Australian television show at least three people with their hands up against a window, and a black flag with Arabic writing.

Hundreds of armed police have sealed off Martin Place in Sydney's central business district.

New South Wales police have asked people to avoid the area.

An Australian Broadcasting Corporation reporter said that gunfire had been heard at the scene, the Lindt chocolate cafe - but this has not been confirmed.

Police have also said that they are dealing with an "incident" at the Sydney Opera House which has been evacuated.

Local media are reporting that a suspicious package was found there on Monday.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has described the incident as "deeply concerning" in a statement.

"All Australians should be reassured that our law enforcement and security agencies are well trained and equipped and are responding in a thorough and professional manner," he said.

A National Security Committee of Cabinet has been convened for Monday morning, the PM's office said.

How sad. I can't see this ending well. They might release the women, children and elderly but I can't imagine them giving up. They want martyrdom.

I have repeatedly seen "non-Islamists" say that "it is just a flag with the Islamic creed on". Like the tawheed salute (single finger pointing upward) is an innocent salute done by every Muslim as well. ISIL and friends do it all the time in their gruesome selfies but they have nothing to do with Islam, of course.

The siege came after a Sydney man was taken into custody on suspicion of terrorism related offences after a raid from AFP and NSW police counter terrorism units this morning.

The AFP said a 25-year-old Beecroft man was arrested as part of investigations into the planning of a terrorist attack on Australian soil and the facilitation of travel of Australian citizens to Syria to engage in armed combat.

Sydney siege: gunman 'demands Islamic State flag'
Sydney siege gunman 'demands Islamic State flag', sparking speculation he may have made a mistake

By Our Foreign Staff - 8:43AM GMT 15 Dec 2014

A man holding hostages in a Sydney cafe on Monday has demanded that a flag of the Islamic State in the levant group, also known as Isis, be delivered to him and warned that four bombs have been planted around the city, a report said.

A major square in the heart of the Australian city is in lockdown with hundreds of armed police surrounding the Lindt chocolate cafe, where a flag - black with white Arabic writing - was held to a window by customers.
It appears to be the shahada, or profession of faith in Islam, and says: "There is no god but Allah; Mohammed is the Messenger of Allah."

The fact he then demanded an Isil flag sparked speculation that the gunman may have made a mistake in his initial choice of flag.

Channel Ten said it had spoken to two of the hostages inside the cafe and the man holding them had made a series of demands.

"Our TenNews team have spoken directly to 2 hostages inside the cafe... They are confirming 2 demands from the perpetrator," the network tweeted.

"He needs the ISIL flag to be directly delivered to the cafe; And his 2nd request is to speak to the Prime Minster.
"They also state there are 4 bombs... two inside the Lindt cafe at Martin Place - and two further in the Sydney CBD."
There was no confirmation from police.

Five people have so far fled the cafe, three men some six hours into the siege and two women about an hour later.
Australia has been on high alert after the government raised concerns that citizens who have fought alongside jihadists in Iraq and Syria could return home radicalised and capable of carrying out attacks.

The government in September raised its terror threat level and police conducted large-scale counter-terror raids across the country.

As a gunman holds people hostage in a cafe in Sydney, thousands of messages of support have been posted online for Muslims in Australia who are afraid of an Islamophobic backlash.

The spark was this post on Facebook by Rachael Jacobs, who said she'd seen a woman she presumed was Muslim silently removing her hijab while sitting next to her on the train: "I ran after her at the train station. I said 'put it back on. I'll walk with u'. She started to cry and hugged me for about a minute - then walked off alone'.

The story of Rachael's encounter with a woman in religious attire inspired this Twitter user, 'Sir Tessa', aka Tessa Kum: "If you reg take the #373 bus b/w Coogee/MartinPl, wear religious attire, & don't feel safe alone: I'll ride with you. @ me for schedule," user 'Sir Tessa' tweeted. Moments later she tweeted "Maybe start a hashtag? What's in #illridewithyou?".

Didn't the prophet according to some hadith use white or black flag? This seems to be the understanding among some muslims who aren't associated with these type of groups

Three dead. The hostage taker and two hostages:

    Quote
Two hostages and the gunman at the centre of a 16-hour siege at a cafe in Sydney's CBD have been shot dead, police have confirmed.

About 2.10am (AEDT) there was a confrontation between police and self-styled Iranian cleric Man Haron Monis, who had taken 17 people hostage inside the Lindt Chocolate Cafe in Martin Place on Monday morning.

Police said shots were fired and as a result, the 50-year-old gunman was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

The two hostages killed, a man aged 34 and a woman aged 38, were also pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

Monis, who was granted political asylum in Australia, took staff and customers in the cafe hostage shortly before 10:00am (AEDT) on Monday.

He was on bail for a string of violent offences, including being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife.

    Indeed.

About the hostage taker Man Haron Monis. Excerpt:

    Quote
As recently as last week on a website he used both to defend and promote himself, he announced that he had converted from Shia to Sunni Islam. That website was shut down as Monday’s siege developed, and police asked media outlets to refrain from giving him a platform as he held 17 hostages in the Lindt cafe in Martin Place.

Sydney Shia leaders had apparently urged federal police to probe his claim to be a leading cleric, while he was ignored by the Sunni community. He had no links to the Islamic State terrorist group, and despite his criminal past was not seen as a likely exponent of the group’s ideology.

One upshot, some would argue, is that he fits bill of a classic lone wolf – a profile that had been much feared by security officials. Monis is believed to have been a self-starter, who had attached himself to the virulent worldview of Isis. His self-radicalisation appeared to be rooted in grievances against the government and fueled by his increasing marginalisation.

Earlier this month, Monis had posted on his website that Shia muslims were rejectionists – a key message of extremist Sunnis in the Middle East.

But there were other hints on the web post that Monis had become radicalised: a rambling October letter he penned to the Muslim community rejected the “new religion” of moderate Islam. ‘This pen is my gun and these words are my bullets, I fight by these weapons against oppression to promote peace,’ he wrote.

An image on the website appears to show Monis wearing the same headband that photographs suggest he donned during the Martin Place siege, reading: “We are ready to sacrifice for you, O Muhammad.”

Shortly after Tony Abbott’s government was elected in September last year, Monis sent the prime minister a letter inviting him to a live debate in which he said he would prove that “Australia and Australians will be attacked” as a result of the country’s participation in the war in Afghanistan.

Muslim funeral directors refuse Sydney terrorist's body

    First entry: 19 December 2014 - 12:42 Athens, 10:42 GMT
    Last update: 12:42 Athens - 10:42 GMT

Australian Muslim funeral directors have vowed not to accept the body of Sydney gunman Man Haron Monis, saying authorities should dump his corpse at sea or “chuck him in the bloody s***house”.

The 50-year-old was killed by police after two hostages died during a 16-hour-siege at a café earlier this week.

His body will be released before Christmas as soon as autopsies are completed but no one has claimed it, the Australian Daily Telegraph reported.

Amin Sayed, a funeral director with the Lebanese Muslim Association, told the newspaper neither he nor any other establishments would perform the rites.

“We don’t care about him, we don’t know him, chuck him in the bloody s***house,” he said. “Nobody’s going to do his funeral, no Muslim funeral home will accept him. They can throw him in the bloody sea.”
