    I hope French muslims will be safe too, along with French Sikhs and anyone else who might be mistaken for a muslim and attacked. 

    I suspect the real backlash will be political though - in fact, I think Marine LePen just won the next presidential election.

    @Cheetah: yes, I think so, too. This attack must have real consequences. Every newspaper, TV channel and magazine should show them.
    If they stop drawing these cartoons now, the terrorists have reached their aim.

    Also I think that in EU countries the government should speak a serious word with the leaders of the mosque. If Islam is really a religion of peace then maybe they have to remember their believers about it. Even if it is against freedom of religion it should be obligatory from now on to say "Islam is the religion of peace. Every terrorist will go to hell. Please do not support them" in every Friday prayer. Every hate preaching mosque should be immediately closed.   

    When I was a Muslim I went to Friday prayer regularly and I never remember that they said something against these terror attack. They just say "you have to do this, you have to do that, stay away from this, this is haram." Useless bullshit...

    well They can not attack all but sure they will become target if not in this month but in the next few years..

        A terrorist attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has left at least 12 dead, officials said...

        The assailants are still on the loose....

        The magazine has a history of satirizing many religions, including Islam. In 2011, the publication was firebombed after running a cartoon depicting the Prophet

    They've got no one to thank but themselves for the inevitable spike in satirical cartoons, things like "Draw Muhammad Day," the popularity of The Satanic Verses, so on and so forth. Time to get smacked down by the Streisand effect once again.

    I just heard the horrible news, I am completely disgusted and furious. Newspapers in Europe should definitely print the cartoons! What a tragedy :(

    I suspect the Streisand effect is only going to be instrumentalised in an environment that was already somewhat primed to damn working-class Muslim migrants (and by extension, those of us who come from such backgrounds).

    This makes sense. My immediate reaction is to only worry about the kind of message that would be sent if violent attempts to silence critics actually silenced them instead of amplifying the criticism, but that's easier to say from a privileged position where I don't have to worry about backlashes either way.
