Abu Ali, any idea what the additional 63:7 phrase may be intended to clarify?  I really can't think of why it might have been added, except maybe to try to explain that the hypocrites are telling people to withhold payment to Mohammed's companions *unless* they leave him.  But how would that have been misinterpreted?  What was the editor's concern, which led him to add this text?  My only guess is that there may have been a perception of *those who are with Mohammed* as being essentially an armed gang that is shaking people down for tribute.  And the hypocrites are saying they won't get paid anything unless they leave people alone and disperse; they'll get paid to leave, while the Messenger wants the jihadi organization held together and paid tribute together.

I took it to simply be a clarification of the verb yanfaddu (disperse) ie emphasising that they want people to abandon Muhammad. I think the editor perhaps thought the verb yanfaddu is a little vague on it's own.

Many Muslims in Medina were hopeful of booty and financial gain. By strangling the money to Muhammad and his supporters the 'hypocrites' hoped to dwindle his support.

This was taking place in 'Medina' (according to the traditional narrative) as the 'hypocrites' only come into the narrative in Medina.

Btw the particle hatta which can mean 'until' I think just means 'so that' in this sentence.

Wow! I step away for a few days and come back to an awesome response to my OP. Many thanks everyone.

I completely agree that the person I will show this stuff to will be closed minded, however I do feel we are obliged to point out the inconsistancies as they are found. Stepping back from this responsibilitiy in the thinking that it won't make any difference will have exactly that outcome.

You never can know where and when the penny will drop. Like an advertising campaign, you may not notice the ad at all, but when you are considering a product your mind will recall knowledge from the ad and so you have been influenced. So it is with this. If doubt ever enters a believers mind, there is the chance that they will recall the information once given by people like us, however long ago.

Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.
