Saudi King Abdullah dies aged 91

Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has died in hospital, state TV says.

Before the announcement, Saudi television cut to Koranic verses early on Friday, which often signifies the death of a senior royal.

King Abdullah, who is said to be aged about 90, had been in hospital for several weeks suffering from a lung infection.

The king came to the throne in 2005 but has suffered frequent bouts of ill health in recent years.

Isn't the next prince in line to be king a real conservative throwback?  That's what I've heard anyway. Ugh! That is the LAST thing KSA needs.

Salman bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud:  Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud, who has succeeded King Abdullah, was born in 1935. He received basic education at the School of Princes in Riyadh, as well as some traditional religious training. He is part of what is known as the Sudairi team (seven sons of King Abdul Aziz from his wife Husa al-Sudairi).
He started his political career in 1954 as governor of Riyadh, at the age of 19. He continued to fill that position, with a brief halt during the power struggle between King Saud and King Faisal, from 1960 until 1962. After that, he resumed his responsibilities as governor of Riyadh until 2011, when he was appointed minister of defense.

In 2012 he was named crown prince.

He is widely known to be conservative and to hold traditional views with regards to political reforms and social change. There are many rumours regarding his health condition as well as his capacity to endure long office hours. Several of his sons hold prestigious and powerful positions.

Look man I don't care who you are what you are,  but work with Baboons that preach in those mosques  and  release  and stop harassing people like Raif and other human rights supporters of Saudi Arabia

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques 79-year-old King Salman vowed to “remain, with God's strength, attached to the straight path that this state has walked since its establishment.  King Salman has pledged to continue the current policies of the government, to ensure stability and unity in the country.

“We will continue by the grace of Allah and His strength to cling to the right path followed by the state since its inception by the founder, the late King Abdul Aziz and his sons after him. We will never deviate from it because our constitution is the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet, peace be upon him,” King Salman said.

Yap ..yap.. onstitution is the Book of Allah and the Sunnah   and Sure   That is what Quran says  King Abdul Aziz and his sons ..sons..sons.. will be Kings of SAN LAND...

That is routine and that is not important.. what is important is

My husband reports that even other Saudis he knew who were once critical of the king are now looking at him in a softer light just because he finally kicked the bucket.

My mother is so cute, though, she woke him up with a text message this morning that said "I'm sorry about your king." She didn't realize that the only reason he says he wouldn't consider himself happy to see the king go is because he thinks being happy about someone's death sounds terrible.

    .............

no not that.. could be bit sympathy.. but real reason is ., those Saudis who were critical of King Abdullah had other Islamic heroes.. such as Osama, Saddam, Muammar Gaddafi. Now they changed

Actually, you're probably on to something. A lot of the criticism I heard from Saudis was more related to money, ranging from incredibly petty (they felt scholarship students didn't get enough monthly income  eusa_boohoo), to much more reasonable (not enough was being done about poverty and homelessness in the kingdom).

But few seemed to gripe about the human rights violations that happened under his control, which is what he's going to be remembered for, and why he failed as a leader, and why he's going to be in the garbage bin of history.

Saudi Arabia has really had a string of terrible rulers. Apart from Faisal, I don’t know that any Saudi monarch has been truly admired by a large portion of the population. Saud was as incompetent as rulers come, Khalid’s reign was pretty unremarkable, and Fahd did not oversee any changes that made things much better at home. I’d say that at the very least, Abdullah managed to set the tone of whatever change the desert nation will see in the next 50-100 years. I think it will be a very interesting phenomenon to watch.

    Quote
RIYADH:  Saudi Arabia's new King Salman on Friday moved to resolve the kingdom's long term succession by appointing his nephew Mohammed bin Nayef as deputy crown prince, meaning he will be the first of that generation to rule the kingdom one day.

Prince Mohammed, who remains as Interior Minister, according to the royal decree carried on state television, is next in line to rule after Salman and Crown Prince Muqrin.

A close friend of the United States, Prince Mohammed has won plaudits from Western countries for his crushing of an al Qaeda insurgency from 2003-06 when he was head of the kingdom's security forces and his father was Interior Minister.

Born in 1959, Prince Mohammed is relatively young by the standard.

HM, I guess so, but I hate the idea of people attributing that to Abdullah himself, and I don't know how extraordinary Abdullah was that his reign will have any more of an impact on the future than what could have been said for any of the old kings. I also suspect a lot of what made his reign any more remarkable was coincidental; it happened to be in an explosion of technology, in the internet age, in an age of social activism, where he could be put on the world stage for everyone to see.

Although, for all of his undeserved accolades (the people's king, the women's king, all those exhausting titles he not only never earned but was in many ways the antithesis of), I guess the one thing that he did do that might have a significant impact going forward was support the scholarship program.

The future of KSA is in the hands of the young people. And many are going abroad and taking some time away from that closed-off world and learning about other ideas and new ways of life, and taking everything they learned back to the country. But again, I'd still hate to see him given credit for that, it was an unintended side effect that they tried their damnedest to fight.

But I reckon if I improve my all-coffee-and-bread diet, maybe I'll live long enough to see what happens.

King Abdullah followed his father's (King Abdulaziz's) path in terms of marriage in that he married the daughters of the al Shalan of Anizah, al Fayz of Bani Sakhr, and al Jarbah of the Iraqi branch of the Shammar tribe.  King Abdullah had about 30 wives, and fathered about 35 children. One of his wives is the sister of Rifaat al-Assad's wife.  He also married Jawahir bint Ali Hussein from Al Jiluwi clan, with whom he had a daughter, Princess Anoud and a son, Prince Saud.  Aida Fustuq was another wife of Abdullah, they had 2 children, Adila and Abdulaziz.  They divorced later.  Munira bint Abdullah Al Al Shaykh was the wife of King Abdullah and gave birth to his eldest living son, Prince Khaled. Tathi bint Mishan al Faisal Al Jarba gave birth to Prince Mishaa
