    Saudi King Abdullah dies aged 91

    Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has died in hospital, state TV says.

    Before the announcement, Saudi television cut to Koranic verses early on Friday, which often signifies the death of a senior royal.

    King Abdullah, who is said to be aged about 90, had been in hospital for several weeks suffering from a lung infection.

    The king came to the throne in 2005 but has suffered frequent bouts of ill health in recent years.

    My husband reports that even other Saudis he knew who were once critical of the king are now looking at him in a softer light just because he finally kicked the bucket.

    My mother is so cute, though, she woke him up with a text message this morning that said "I'm sorry about your king." She didn't realize that the only reason he says he wouldn't consider himself happy to see the king go is because he thinks being happy about someone's death sounds terrible.

    no not that.. could be bit sympathy.. but real reason is ., those Saudis who were critical of King Abdullah had other Islamic heroes.. such as Osama, Saddam, Muammar Gaddafi. Now they changed

    Actually, you're probably on to something. A lot of the criticism I heard from Saudis was more related to money, ranging from incredibly petty (they felt scholarship students didn't get enough monthly income  eusa_boohoo), to much more reasonable (not enough was being done about poverty and homelessness in the kingdom).

    But few seemed to gripe about the human rights violations that happened under his control, which is what he's going to be remembered for, and why he failed as a leader, and why he's going to be in the garbage bin of history.

    Saudi Arabia has really had a string of terrible rulers. Apart from Faisal, I don’t know that any Saudi monarch has been truly admired by a large portion of the population. Saud was as incompetent as rulers come, Khalid’s reign was pretty unremarkable, and Fahd did not oversee any changes that made things much better at home. I’d say that at the very least, Abdullah managed to set the tone of whatever change the desert nation will see in the next 50-100 years. I think it will be a very interesting phenomenon to watch.

    HM, I guess so, but I hate the idea of people attributing that to Abdullah himself, and I don't know how extraordinary Abdullah was that his reign will have any more of an impact on the future than what could have been said for any of the old kings. I also suspect a lot of what made his reign any more remarkable was coincidental; it happened to be in an explosion of technology, in the internet age, in an age of social activism, where he could be put on the world stage for everyone to see.

    Although, for all of his undeserved accolades (the people's king, the women's king, all those exhausting titles he not only never earned but was in many ways the antithesis of), I guess the one thing that he did do that might have a significant impact going forward was support the scholarship program.

    The future of KSA is in the hands of the young people. And many are going abroad and taking some time away from that closed-off world and learning about other ideas and new ways of life, and taking everything they learned back to the country. But again, I'd still hate to see him given credit for that, it was an unintended side effect that they tried their damnedest to fight.

    But I reckon if I improve my all-coffee-and-bread diet, maybe I'll live long enough to see what happens.
