    To be fair that pic may well have been a random thing. I wouldn't want to tar anybody with any brush just for being associated with someone else along the line.

    Yup, the doozies are attracted to UKIP, doesn't mean that UKIP is racist per say. I do think immigration is an issue in the UK and Europe.

    They have, just doesn't mean their policies are inherently racist. Also some of the racist comments imo have been blown out of proportion by the news which tries to be entertaining (bongo bongo land comment wrt foreign aid).

    It's an interesting distinction, but one does sometimes wonder how useful it is.

    As a political party, UKIP seems to attract racists and homophobes in a way that the traditional political homes of such no longer can. At some point, one has to ask why.

    Cause they are different, with policies to these peoples likings as well as characters in the party who are racist. People I think like them regardless as they are seen as more honest with the big 3 being seen as PC fuckwits who couldn't organise a booze up in a brewery. Basically people are fed up of weasel word politicians.

    It's all very well feeling disenfranchised by the more established political parties, but Farage is a weasel too.

    He's exempt from similar oppobrium because his noisy but oh-so-principled followers still think of him as a political Messiah. Strategically speaking, this means his party will be best served by remaining in its particular cul-de-sac, which in turn means that its particular collection of the disaffected (in no small way consisting of a collection of white middle- and working-class people who think that Britain doesn't belong to them anymore - newsflash: the Thatcher period notwithstanding, it never did) will remain both its great strength and great liability.

    They act as a safety valve of sorts, rather than a genuine alternative. They can't be one, because the political territory they stake out won't let them.

    UKIP's more lunatic supporters are great for drawing out other mouthbreathers into the open. There's a fine line between the rest of society pointing and laughing at that sort of thing and more people internalising (and drawing legitimacy for) various attitudes because they're apparently easier to express. The politically correct are a useful bogeyman in this case, as ever, because every free speech martyr loves to be thought of as an underdog.

    UKIP's gadfly status allows them more influence than it would otherwise, because the major parties see this sort of appeal and want to benefit from it. And there lies a subtler danger.

    If you read the full article the Paris incident sounds perfectly in character. Often people with careers in NGOs are in it for the career not the cause.
