  • Being a continual boofhead
     OP - June 03, 2015, 06:59 AM

Sometimes Australian politics rocks. This is one of those times. bunny

The background to this is that a sports commentator got huffy the other day when an Aboriginal football player did a spontaneous war dance at the opposing team's supporters in the stands. These supporters have a history of giving this particular player a hard time (dunno why) so he was basically giving them the finger after just scoring a goal. Commentator then got huffy about it.

Anyway, the upshot of it is that today the New South Wales Upper House has passed a parliamentary motion, officially labeling said commentator "a continual boofhead". Cheesy

Eddie McGuire labelled 'boofhead' by NSW Upper House

    Quote
AFL identity Eddie McGuire has been condemned as a "continual boofhead" by the Upper House of the NSW Parliament for comments he made about an Indigenous dance performed by Sydney Swans star Adam Goodes.

The Upper House passed a motion, moved by Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham, supporting Australian of the Year Goodes as a "role model to all" and condemning McGuire for "being a continual boofhead".

Goodes performed the dance on-field during the Swans' match against Carlton on Friday, later saying it was an Indigenous "war dance" he was taught by underage Indigenous AFL team the Flying Boomerangs.

During a Fox Footy broadcast, McGuire described the dance as "quite aggressive" and said: "I don't think we ever want to see it again, to be perfectly honest."

He later said Goodes should have flagged his intention to perform the dance before the game so commentators such as himself "could have been able to educate and understand the situation".

    The Upper House motion said:

This House condemns Mr Eddie Macguire [sic], the President of the Collingwood Football Club, for:

        (a) his comment that "This is a made-up dance, this is not something that has been going on for years.", and

        (b) being a continual boofhead.

i find the Australian society quite strange, as far as i am concerned, i find the people here very open and tolerant to other cultures, but some subjects are really deeply taboo, you gave the example of the aboriginal player's war cry.

i was intrigued by the media reaction to Russell crowe comments about gallipoli, all he said that it was an invasion, which is true !!!  it is interesting that every society has some sacred history that no one is allowed to criticize Smiley

I think most Australians have got pretty used to having a range of cultural backgrounds in the country, except for some die-hard idiots.

The war dance thing isn't taboo at all. Most people, as far as I can tell, thought it fine for him to use it to wind the opposing team's supporters up. If you can get an Upper House motion passed in the guy's favour, that should show you how taboo it is.

The whole Anzac thing is another matter. There's a lot of mythology and attitude about that. Frankly I think it gets overdone.

Its because we voted to legalise gay marriage, Hass.  Homophobes the world over have been spouting anti-Irish nonsense in response.  Funniest of all was the Westboro Baptist lot who uploaded a You Tube of themselves dancing what I think was supposed to be an Irish jig on top of the flag of the Ivory Coast.   wacko

Umm, no. They had an Irish flag. In the picture you can see the reinforcing at the hoist side of the flag, which is clearly the green side. The Ivory Coast flag is the other way around.

What the article you linked to actually says is that the fundies got it the wrong way around on their signs, but had the right flag for their crappy dancing stunt.

No, our national symbol is the harp.  That aside, this guy is a racist wanker, although boofhead would also be a good word for him.

A national symbol, maybe but not the national symbol.  Its the same as the Scottish have the thistle as a national symbol but their official symbol is the lion, Wales has the daffodil but their official symbol is the dragon, etc.

So you agree that the shamrock is a national symbol of Ireland? Good.  dance Where was the word "the" used in the quote? Or the word "official"? Ireland does have a mutant lawn weed as its national symbol. It just happens to have another one as well, that nobody ever thinks about. parrot

I can't believe you're actually defending this guy.  He's a racist wanker, and his comments were neither justified nor funny.  It also hasn't escaped my notice that his comments were really motivated by opposition to marriage equality for Australia's gay community, so he's a homophobic wanker too.

And he's an ugly bastard to boot.  I saw him on the BBC news earlier and he has a face on him that would turn milk.

Since the Irish aren't one race, particularly as there are many ethnicities who are Irish nowadays, xenophobic seems more appropriate than racist.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

Racism is commonly used to denote bigotry against people on the grounds of their race, ethnicity or nationality, but whatever.  He's a bigot whatever word you use.

I don't know if the bloke actually is racist or xenophobic. It's pretty clear he's probably homophobic, but taking the piss out of anything is a national tradition over here, and isn't necessarily malicious as such. FFS, I'm one quarter Irish and I thought his comments were funny. Being on the wrong side of history re same sex marriage =/= racism or xenophobia. I'd find it equally funny if an Irish person (not mentioning any names) took the piss out of Australia. Oh wait, that has happened.
