This reminds me of the NFL Muslim touchdown prayer in which a Muslim player was almost fined for his act of worship while every Christian that has done the same is praised for it. People build up a stereotype based on the average players as a basis for what is deemed acceptable to them, not the league itself, then call foul when someone violates these subjective non-rules.

I never really doubted that the Australian public would vote for it.  When I said not mature enough, I was partly yanking your chain and partly referring to the kind of things that might be said by no campaigners.  I get the impression that public discourse in Ireland is a bit more circumspect than it is in Australia, and even so, it must have been hard enough for a lot of same sex couples to listen to the no campaigners over here.  My fear would be that an Australian referendum would be more like the Californian one, where a lot of the things said by no side were downright horrible.

And anyway, if Australian law allows for it to be legalised without a referendum, what's the point in having one?  We had no choice but if you guys have then why bother with a long drawn out referendum campaign if you can just legalise it in one afternoon via a parliamentary vote?

That's why we won't bother with a referendum. I was just pointing out the actual situation here. It's the pollies that are screwing around. A majority of the electorate has been ready for ages. Once Abbott gives up and allows a conscience vote it'll be sorted in no time.

And I knew you were trying to wind me up. grin12 You can probably gauge the general quality of the "No" side from the comments in this thread. They don't have much to add, and they're getting desperate. In fact, they know they have already lost. What they say no longer matters.

ETA: In general it doesn't seem to have been too vitriolic, based on what I've seen on the media I usually frequent. Then again, I tend not to frequent the worst of the media. Still, with a majority of the electorate in favour IRL it figures that most people wouldn't be impressed by OTT bigots, so I'm not too worried about them.

It is similar to the war dance in which a cultural and/or religious practice is deemed unacceptable while common rituals displayed by Christians are not an issue. In both cases people from Fox went nuts over the display of a non-Christian acts while ignoring people like Tebow did the same thing without an flags flying. However unlike Australia the government does not pass a motion labeling these fools what they are as most of the American government would be guilty of the same if they happen to be a republican.

Ah, gotcha. You're back to talking about the Aboriginal war dance. I thought you were still talking about the Irish war dance.

Irish war dances are born from the winds of the Morrigan.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

That was decent of him.  Normally people who say that type of thing issue a sort of non-apology "sorry if you were offended" statement, so at least he's held his hands up.

Yebbut he's a racist prick who despises Irish people. finmad

I did tell you there was a good chance you were wrong. You don't understand how Australian humour works because you've never lived here. Whether you happen to find it funny or not doesn't change the fact that over here people can throw around comments like that without any malice being intended. I was thinking to myself that if the only thing you knew about me was that I found his comments funny, you would have been going off at me and calling me a racist prick who despises Irish people. The only reason you didn't is because you've known me for years.

It wouldn't have made any difference to who or what I actually was though. I'd still have an Irish grandfather, would still know that Galway hookers are not prostitutes, and would still think Róisín Murphy is the shit. And none of my best friends are Irish either so I can't be fucking racist. Tongue

So now it turns out that this bloke has Irish ancestors too. Go figure. parrot

Yeah fair enough, maybe there was something lost in translation there but I still think we were right to get cranky.  Firstly because making cracks about famine victims is just not on, no matter how many Irish ancestors you have, and secondly because people in a lot of countries are reacting to the referendum here by calling for it to be legalised in their own countries.  We don't want every homophobe in the west thinking they have a free pass to badmouth Ireland.
