إِنْ جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَأٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا أَنْ تُصِيبُوا قَوْمًا بِجَهَالَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا عَلَى مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَادِمِينَ

"If a wicked person comes to you with any news, ascertain the truth, lest ye harm people unwittingly, and afterwards become full of repentance for what ye have done." (Al-Hujarat verse 6)

That is excellent Qur'anic advice - and elegantly phrased - if only it hadn't been spoilt by the word "Fasiq" (wicked/sinner/debauched/depraved) - I often want to quote it but the word "Fasiq" makes me stop lol

Well just put "person" (i.e Mar' مرء or Shakhs شخص) instead of "Fasiq" would be better.

I agree. The terms used carry a stereotype which by definition create a scenario in which the person already has a bias against them.

Precisely!

Plus one should check info/gossip/hearsay especially when it comes from someone we like or trust, because that is when we are more inclined to just take it at face value.

Saying to check gossip from "the wicked" - is pretty much a no brainer anyway.

Far too many accept the authority and claims of fellow believers as reliable then employ a double-standard for non-believers. This is a fact of how humans think. This is a reason why objective standards are taught rather than internal religious standards.

For an example look at the Duggars scandal and those supporting them. They are comprised of people that share similar views thus are less likely to question them as this would result in question their own views which people hate to do since they could be wrong.

This verse came to mind because a friend showed me a video of something and at first I was taken in, but for some reason I decided to check and found it was fake. I wanted to quote that verse to him, but couldn't because otherwise I would be implying he was a Fasiq lol

Why would he take that position? Unless you know your friend would react badly by experience.

I don't know how he might react - he is an acquaintance more than a friend. But if a friend brings you news and you check it and find it's false, so you say to him, "Oh I checked it and it's false - as the Qur'an says: 'If a wicked person brings you news check it..." it could be taken the wrong way.

Even if he didn't feel a little upset about being compared to "a wicked person" - I don't want risk that he might think I would imply such a thing about him.
