Just back from #Idiomeni, the place where #EU's last vestige of decency went to die.
So filled with rage at the injustices heaped on #refugees I talked to at Idomeni
Asked by many, many #refugees why border was closed. I said was simple but they wouldn't like it. #EU run by racist assholes
I could discuss geopolitics, delicacies of internal #EU power politics etc, but that's just horse sh*t. Panicky, scared racists running show
#Idomeni is not the #EU I signed up for. Brutal, racist, willing to abandon it's basic principles at the slightest of challenges.
#refugees told me many reason they stay at #Idomeni. Some believe Albania will open border and they'll go to Italy by sea
Some believe that current border closure is temporary, just like all the previous ones
Some believe next EU summit meeting on 17 March will see see change in EU policy so reopening the borders
Some just believe as the option of being forced back to Syria is so awful it can't be true
What do you say? I told them the borders are closed and unlikely to open anytime soon. To rob someone of hope is a terrible thing.
I asked elderly Syrian lady how long she'd been in #Idomeni, she replied '10 years',corrected herself '10 days'. She was right first time
A day in #Idomeni for the sick, disabled, very young or ill is an eternity's
I have never been so ashamed to call myself a European as today in #Idomeni
There's no bombing, tidal wave, zombie apocalypse etc in #Idomeni yet #refugees forced to live like animals there
Racism, ineptitude, political calculation and appeals to basest instincts of Europeans fueling disaster at #Idomeni.
Which is worse? Feeding people false hope in face of overwhelming evidence or telling truth and rob them of hope they have left?
Waiting without end
