In spite of the earlier negativity I poured on the thread the one consolation I must admit to enjoying is the possible recruitment from the recently flourishing sect of ex muslims which I fondly now know as Haramadanians. If there are any Haramadians reading this thread please take a bow, you make my Ramadans worth while.  Afro

We have to make that up later.

Who will keep track of that Huh? Also fasting can be done during winter easily in northern part of the world.

    or you can do this....

Fasting person to a non fasting female who is eating

    - Why are you eating during Ramadan?

To which the female non fasting person answers

    - Its impolite to ask such questions of a lady during Ramadan. Shame on you!

We always had to pretend to be fasting during Ramadhan, even if we could not. I never did see a Muslim lady eating during the fasting month. Except for one ex Muslim lady who was pretending to be Muslim.

I always pretended to fast in front of my dad and bro just because it's really awkward not to get up at Sahoor and have the
ask me why I didn't eat. It's practically an announcement.

I don't understand why there is so much shame associated with what is fundamentally a bodily process. It's not like an announcement that you're having sex; if anything it says you haven't, because you're not pregnant. So I don't see why it's got the same amount of shame associated with it as like having a wet dream or something.

Question to agnostic and atheist muslims, will you be fasting in ramadan? Smiley

I totally agree, I just tend to like to keep my business to myself because that's who I am. If you want to make an announcement then you're more than welcome.

Surely anyone not doing it to Mecca time is being innovative and therefore it is haram?  I mean precisely Mecca time, with the time change!

I don't think anything specifies Mecca time. This is something scholars have said for those living in countries where sunrise/sunset is just not workable. Some say Mecca time, others say the times of the nearest islamic country.

Wet dreams are a bodily process, too. So shaming either is ridiculous.

I tried fasting late last year. I ate on the 19th December and didn't eat again until Christmas dinner with the family. Four and a half-five days without eating anything, never fasted before in my life. I didn't feel anything spiritual, I didn't feel cleansed, I didn't enter a state of euphoria, I just felt hungry. Tried it again a month and a half ago, after a few days it felt like my gums were going to start bleeding.

They're not voluntary, but they're not entirely inevitable either.

    Straight up water fast?
I am not able to do that. I pass out very easily if my caloric intake isn't above 300 by lunchtime.

I've done prolonged water or liquid fasts. Think the longest I've gone was 7 days. But I can also go weeks at a time eating less than 1,000 calories a day because I don't feel like eating.

No, just food. Aren't you supposed to die if you go three days without drinking?

A water fast is just with drinking, that's what I meant.

    ....
According to some St Petersburg Muslim authorities, the long-lasting daylight in the city at this time of year is simply an extra challenge to their faith.

“In St Petersburg, Muslims see this as a test. In the time that is now starting they will observe the fast,” said an employee of the St Petersburg and Northwest Regional Muslim Spiritual Centre, who declined to give his name. “Those Muslims who are observing the fast will wait 21-22 hours to break the fast, they will eat for only three hours.”

When asked about the difficulty of keeping to this strict schedule, he said it was no burden for the faithful.

Because you have to, or do you see it as a tradition?

Today we had training days at work and where we had a lot of stuff to eat (cakes, fruits). One Muslim colleague fasted, although he could have come with the excuse that he is on travel. It was hard for me to see. I always feel sorry with the fasting people. This year is the first time where I don't fast and don't feel guilty about it.

I was at Wegmans yesterday and this ten year old was throwing a temper tantrum yelling at his mom "BUT I HATE RAMADAN. I AM SO HUNGRY!!!". She looked mortified but I feel no sympathy. That's what happens when you force a kid to starve.

I wasn't even allowed to fast at 10 years old, barely a late breakfast by a couple of hours, but no fasting. Why would a parent want their child who isn't required to fast make their kid fast?

You're a rarity. I started "half" fasting when I was 6 and full fasting 8.

Btw I broke my fast on candy and water but my dad is always sat right in front of the kitchen though:(

I guess I'm lucky I didn't have to fast until i was 17, I'm still sneaking in food though. Managed 3 packets of uncle ben's rice and a sandwich  dance.
